NASA panorama with proper color
Just downloaded the NASA panorama and adjusted it using Keyhole's custom tools. The color corrected image looks much better after careful color processing. (Here is a smaller version if the original is too large for you.)

This is not the first gigapixel image
Images like this are common in GIS applications, often orthorectified product stitched into a seamless continuous image map of massive areas of terrain, these images are vast, far in excess of a gigapixel.

Some even generate even larger contiguous image sets at multiple resolutions from these data sources:

we are seeing the tip of the iceberg for BI
It needs to be said here is that BI is a new field and it is evolving. Are 100 million people going to use data visualization tools on a daily basis? Probably not however one can say that the adoption rate of such tools will increase in 5 years. I used to think that BI was just marketing spin until I started doing it a few years. Basically 10 years ago BI was not possible - companies could afford to create their own terabyte databases then mine that information. Today that is possible and tools such as Oracle Discoverer allow non-technical employees to execute complicated queries. That itself is crazy and it gets better. BI will make the decision making process faster and more accurate. Getting there will take time but it will happen. Dashboards are already a common name. My favorite is the sector map offered by SmartMoney. It's an awesome tool however it is pricey and put this in front of your average sales person and they will freeze due to information overload. -
Try Earthviewer, comYou too can zoom in on Baghdad, just like the news stations. Earthviewer.com has aerial photographs of the entire Earth, with high-resolution coverage of most US cities. High-resolution coverage of Baghdad and Kabul is also available. You need a good graphics card and at least a DSL line to get the full effect, but if you have that, you can fly over terrain in real time.
This is a fun program. Useful, too. I've been looking for commercial real estate, and use it to look at properties before driving over.

Hmmm. I hope CNN has a backup plan for maps, because it looks like it is the latest victim of Shock and Awe.

Earthviewer
On a similar note, a friend recently introduced me to a cool little program called Earthviewer 3D. It is a (sort of) 3D globe that you can zoom in on smoothly, gives you very nice resolution in many areas (you can see individual cars on the Bay Bridge in S.F.). They have a free 14 day trial you can get here. Unfortunately, looks like it is Windows only. And I have no idea how much it costs. And it takes a decent 3D card. And probably a decent internet connection, since it downloads all the textures continously. But other than that, it is pretty fun.
