Re:Pop
He keeps them all online? Does his provider not have a pop3 option to download everything he has been hoarding on their servers and sort from there at his own leisure?
Yes, they do, and I agree that's the obvious answer.

From Nova Scotia/Eastlink
Just checked out their $25 package.. Ripoff...
See they had broadcast analog TV here for 50+ years with 3 channels... CBC, ATV, Global(newer)... Then they ended analog TV and reduced digital coverage significantly...
The new $25/month package has government channels and all Bull $hit with the only watchable channels being... CBC, ATV, Global... So what this amounts to is, $25/month + $5+tuner RENTAL to get the 3 channels we had free since TV took to the airwaves...Oh and 15% HST sales tax on top of that... Yes netflix subscriber... Internet pricing has gone up nearly 50% in the last few years as well..Crooks the lot of them, not just cable companies CRTC which serves THEM.

Re:Rogers sucks, Eastlink rocks.Correction:
EastLink High Speed Internet is currently available in areas of Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and New Brunswick. To satisfy the demand for this rapidly growing service, we are actively upgrading our networks and will be offering High Speed Internet in more areas soon.

It seems they've grown, I hope they get to my area soon, I'd switch to them with no hesitation whatsoever. They are simply the best there is. -
Rogers sucks, Eastlink rocks.
Eastlink - still the industry leaders in North America. Too bad they're only in Nova Scotia.
Rogers is a criminal organisation, seriously. They think nothing of false advertising, breach of contract and extortion, in fact it's standard operating procedure for them.
I can't rave enough about the quality of Eastlink's service though, they treat their customers with respect, go the extra mile and provide excellent quality service. I attribute their expertise to the staff of the old Dartmouth Cable that they absorbed a few years back. In 1994 I had a 5Mbit down and up static IP shell account and permission to run any servers you liked with Dartmouth cable for $40 a month. They still lead the pack on the entire continent, though they're not as free with the upstream bandwidth as they were originally. Though Eastlink is still the best cable ISP in North America in my experience. -
Comcast
Comcast is notoriously bad for bad wiring and lack of physical security on their lines.
This story is about Comcast and Verizon, not cable and phone companies.
Eastlink and Aliant get along just fine and have excellent line quality. (aside from the fact that DSL sucks and coax is far superior for network data)
Comcast sucks, always has and always will. -
Industry leader Absent
Note that the North American industry leader in broadband internet service is absent from the list of particpating ISPs: EastLink
EastLink is head and shoulders above every other broadband service provider in North America. They always have been and always will be. Their absence from this list of ISPs is particularly telling of the programs merit. If it was worthwhile and effective then EastLink would be participating. EastLink's expertise and knowledge is second to none.
EastLink is the result of the marriage of two family businesses: Shaw Cable and Dartmouth Cable. The combination of Shaw's customer service and Dartmouth Cable's expertise is unparalleled in North America in my experience.
I fondly recall the 5Mbit down and UP cable internet service complete with shell account I had with them back in 1992... sigh, the good old days.
Coax copper rocks! Go EastLink! -
Re:Pirate Bay admin interviewed (in English)
In Halifax, NS, we can get 10mbps connections for $55.95 +tax->$65CAD. If you buy it with your phone or cableTV service, it works out to much less. More like $45. Didn't think we were that privileged.

Quality vs. Quality
Hey -
I thought I'd post my experience moving from Insight Digital Cable (Indiana) to Eastlink (Halifax, Canada) to Aliant (Halifax, Canada).
The Indiana connection was advertised as 5 Mbps download, and not too far off actual speeds. Also, there seemed to be no throttling based on what I was doing (e.g. bittorrent, p2p). I paid $44.95, no taxes or additional fees, and was very happy.
I joined Eastlink about 2 months ago, which advertises service so fast "you don't have time to blink". However, what they don't tell you is that they use Ellacoya servers which implement technologies to throttle bandwidth to anyone using eMule, bittorrent, and a variety of other P2P technologies. Oh, and I was paying about $40 CDN/month for this.
Of course, as soon as I found out what they were doing, I switched from the cable guy (Eastlink) to the dsl guy (Aliant). Back to 5 Mbps, no throttling, much happier, $49.99 CDN/month.
The short bit: I would take Canada off the list of countries which are outpacing the US in broadband. From what I can tell, Eastlink's behavior is more common than Aliant in Canada. What good is 10+ Mbps if you can't use bittorrent? [for linux distros AND pr0n, of course]. -
Re:Different technologies, different purpose
This is the ringer on my phone. For some reason my neighbours don't like me. But that's OK, in revenge I just torture their cats by taping them to the bell.

Alternate site for trailer
-
First 10 on WinXXXX(I actually like/use Windows 2000, just for Office pretty much):
1] PuTTY
2] WinSCP
3] McAffee VirusScan Enterprise
4] Moz Firefox
5] WinAMP
6] WinZIP
7] SciTE
8] MS Office
(I'm familiar with OO.o and StarOffice, but from what I've seen, MSOffice is the hands-down winner for me and is primarily what keeps me on Windows).
10] DBDesigner 4
And that about rounds out the list. After that, I reboot and hot-patch the box with locally stored patches, reboot, THEN connect for new patches.

Canada-Runs / Rules
Salon.com (I know, I know, it's the bane of everyone's existance) had an interesting article about the increasing number of Americans joining us up here in the so-called Great White North (or Damp Grey North, as I like to call it). I would provide a link, but they've moved the file and I can't find it the new location (how sad is that?). My ISP, Eastlink, has no problems with people file-sharing, and offers suggestions on how to reduce your bandwidth usage, as we have a 30 GB transfer limit per month. In general, I find it absolutely sickening that American government is letting corporations get so much control over the basic rights of their citizens. Canadian TV and radio might suck, but at least we have our freedom.

Re:Screw walkware...
I want software that actually RUNS!
Warning: Overclocking your hardware may cause instabilities. A water cooling system is recommended. Failing that, upgrade your CPU. -
Even Better Water Cooling Solution!
After trying many different Peltier solutions, I became frustrated at how cumbersome they are and how painful they are to install.
Finally I came up with a water cooling solution that was easy, simple, and , best of all, completely free!
The picture isn't so good (it's a little hard to make out the details of the PC), but I'm sure everyone can do this mod too!

Can$40In Halifax Canada there is pretty good competition between the cable Internet, EastLink and the DSL Internet, Mpowered. Free install, special offers etc.
They're both about Can$40 a month. I have no idea about up/down speeds. Maybe between 100 kilobytes/s and 300 KB/s for a fast site. As far as I know the cable is symmetric. I upload tens of megs of digital photos plenty fast enough for me, anyway.

Phone Service competition.Hmph... for those who are interested, in Halifax, NS, Canada, we have two local phone providers. The interesting thing is that the new one doesn't provide over POTS at all... but coax! That's right... the cable company, Eastlink (who also does our cable modems) are also doing phone services. You keep your existing internal wiring, as well as your phone number. Additionally, there is talk that our phone company, MTT is going to deliver cable over DSL, and the power company Nova Scotia Power, has fiber all over the place and is thinking of going into the market too. And, of course, we have three cellphone providers. Very interesting, since we have a very small population. (and relitively good for the end user, since bandwidth is insainly cheap here.) It'll be interesting to see how it turns out.
We are also taking steps towards banning pesticides and making Scent-Free law. *heavy sigh*
