Re:A long time agoFrom http://www.eco-sphere.com/about.html
:"Because the living organisms within the EcoSphere utilize their resources without overpopulating or contaminating their environment, the EcoSphere requires virtually no maintenance. EcoSpheres have an average life expectancy of two years. However, it is not uncommon for shrimp populations to be thriving in systems as old as 7 years."

Re:SeaMonkey - how cute
Ecosphere is the place where I got them. They themselves say that the shrimp populations can survive for that long.

Re:Well good
OK, you are wrong. What he is trying to say, and do is take the conversation up a notch. He fully knows that evolution works but posits a larger question. If you had enough technology and knowledge isn't intelligent design possible? It is a slight variation on the old "Any sufficient technology is indistinguishable from magic." saying. And of course he is correct, one only has to look for one of those self contained ecoballs (some small critter, water, nutrients, a plant of some kind - leave out in weak sunlight) to see an intelligently designed 'world'. Given enough power, knowledge, and technology people see that terraforming a planet is not so hard perhaps. There is a group that has concieved plans for Mars I think. Next would be building them from scratch. Has it happened? I don't know, nor is there any scientific proof. As a religeous person, and a scientist I find myself equally intrested and disgusted with each side. ID (w/caps) is tripe, but from a more philosophical bent id(small) is interesting to think about. I heartily agree keep it out of the science classroom as a set of "facts" but muse about it in a senior in college eco-design class.

Re:Ecosphere..
Actually this review from Carl Sagan on the same site is probably a more interesting read:

Ecosphere..
I found the ecosphere image quite interesting.. here's a page describing what looks to be a similar thing:

It would seem they're not quite perfected yet as they only survive for 2 years on average!
Its amazing the balance that is somewhat maintained in our own little ecosphere! -
Re:QT: Anyone have one of those "biosphere" globes
Yes they're still sold under the name "eco-sphere". The company's put up a classic excerpt from Carl Sagan's book "Billions and Billions" where he ponders the workings of the ecosystem in one of the "worlds" (world #4210) he bought.

Already being done!!! Need a "live" ornament?
You can buy them at eco-sphere.com. I saw these in person, they are really cool but too bad everything dies after a year or so.

Re:Bah!
You could get an eco-sphere... They're not luminescent, but you don't need to clean the 'tank'

Ecosphere
While not really a "pet", they are great for geeks. I have one at work.
Eco-sphere
They don't require any maintenance and if you forget about them for a few weeks, no big deal. Occasionally, I'll put in the dark for a few days to stop the algae growth and to satisfy my god complex.
I had mine for about a year now and my 4 little brine friends are still running in circles. -
Eco-Sphereswww.eco-sphere.com
These little beauties are better than fish tanks because they don't smell.
They are better than plants because you don't have to water them.
They remind you that some things in life are still simple.
And most importantly, in the soul-depleating office enviroment of the 21st century they can give you a much needed dose of megalomania that can get you through the day.

Eco Sphere
I must say, I'm surprised Think Geek doesn't carry Eco-Spheres
They don't require feeding, can get by on artificial light, and you can waste hours just watching one.
No, I don't work for the company, I just own one, they are cool -
No Eco-Spheres?
No Eco-spheres?

Eco-Spheres
For Christmas, I would love an http://www.eco-sphere.com/. It's one of those self-contained glass globes with shrimp, algae and bacteria inside. All you have to do is add light and they should last for a few years. Very cool. Price ranges from $79 to $489, depending on the size (from 3.25" diameter sphere to 9" diameter sphere).
