Re:digital to analog conversionCan you imagine someone spending a few grand on AV and then being too cheap to buy a DVD?

Re:MAC version?
Presuming you mean MacOSX, then yes;
Check out aMule & MLDonkey. They're both quite popular and multi-platform.
There's also the offical client/version that is also supposed to work on OSX, but I haven't tried it myself.
Hope that's akin to what you were looking for. -

Re:Profit
Slashdot has a genuine misunderstanding of the piracy network that exists. There are groups dedicated to cracking and releasing software, games, and even ebooks. There are websites dedicated to listing checksums which let you search for legitimate copys of the releases on the filesharing networks. None of this requires you to be "Elite" or "In the know." Pirating couldn't be easier with the anti-RIAA/MPAA/Government protection measures made by other people just a few searches away. As much as people think every download is monitored, every file is tracked, it simpily isn't true. Bittorrent, the much vaunted transfer method, is not secure, but Edonkey can be made relativly safe.
Edonkey
Sharereactor, a libary of edonkey links
Methlabs, Peerguardian's homepage, protects from MPAA/RIAA etc
Bluetack, home of the Blocklist Manager, keeps Peerguardian updated
With these you can find almost any book, any game, any program, virus free and not have to worry about getting a letter from your ISP. It's not perfect, but it's certinally better than bittorrent, and it isn't as hard as most people on slashdot think. -
Hmm?
One of the foot notes in the letter (which I can now read via PDF) states that the big issue is that by default file sharing programs share the entire hard drive of the user.
I am not aware of any P2P United client doing that, eDonkey in particular shares only files you have downloaded from the network by default. -
kazaa, bittorrent, emule/edonkey?
is kazaa one of the vendors? is there anything they can do about emule or edonkey users?
the latter seem to traffic especially in things like leaked source RARs, and since most of the central servers are overseas and operated independently (and 'overnet' seems truly peer to peer with no central servers), it would be tough to crack down on them, besides having a bunch of fake clients that harvest IPs. anyone know if they do this?
(i imagine the same concept would apply for bittorrent downloaders -- except BT relies on central tracking servers which would be comparatively easy to shut down.)
seems like a natural, uh, application, for the freenet project ;)
ah well. it's kinda scary that even the largest/richest software co in the world can't stop the spread of their IP, and that it takes only one person.

Re:Wait, there's more . . .
IT'S A SHAME!
These lamers at Napster bought the site http://www.edonkey.com and advise the visitors to download NeoNapster.
The original edonkey url is http://www.edonkey2000.com. If you prefer, get Kazaalite at http://www.kazaalite.nl.
I think I will be really be happy when I'll ear that Napster has died.
