Re:Microsoft Robotics? Are you crazy?
Omron Corporation is making a robotic cat as well.
And Dyson wasn't really first, Electrolux was the first company in the world to develop a robotic vacuum cleaner. (One of my previous professors was on the development team). Several others have followed, btw.
Finally, I've seen robotic lawn mowers as well (my boss owns one), several brands on the market. The first one was from Husqvarna, I think. The concept is quite similar to the vacuum cleaner concept, though, it's really the same principle. -
lawnmower
Autonomous wandering lawnmowers have been for sale for years already. Here's one example:

Re:In case you were wondering...
Thanks.
But it's a mere copy. Nothing sucks like an Electrolux! -
trilobite
Eell trilobite came out a year ago so it's not exactly the first... trilobite

Re:Why is it...
Electrolux of Sweden has a machine called Trilobyte that can recharge it self. See http://www.trilobite.electrolux.se/ . It is much more expensive though.

Re: Really a Electrolux ripoff
Here's a photo of a woman posing with her new Trilobite.
Is it just me or does it look like she is getting ready to be "taken" from behind?
-
Re:What ifYes, the Electrolux Trilobite actually recharges itself automatically. Check out the English press-kit.
The technology they are using in the Trilobite to let it map out rooms is really cool: echo-location with ultrasound, just as bats do.
As far as I know, it's so far only being sold in Sweden (since spring 2002) and Norway (since autumn 2002). I've read that Electrolux plans to start marketing it for other European countries in early 2003.
The only down-side about this robo-cleaner is the price.. about 12000 kroner here in Norway, which is about USD $1500. (Ouch.)
I've been drooling over this thing since it was released on the Swedish market, but it's way too expensive for me yet. Hopefully competing products will force Electrolux to lower the price.

Not so sure about Roomba beeing the fist
Take a look at:
http://www.trilobite.electrolux.se/
Roomba is lot cheaper though. Trilobite sells for well over $1000.

First?
This one has been around for a while: http://trilobite.electrolux.se/presskit_en/index.

Similar robot from ElectroLuxHere in Scandinavia, ElectroLux has commercially launched Trilobite which is similar -- it runs around finding the walls, uses ultrasound to detect obstacles and can find its way back to the base station when necessary. This happened about a year ago (November 2001) according to the press release dates.
Trilobite is about 12000 DKK however, which is 1500 EUR.
Here's the Danish website with Flash demonstration and some information in English too.

hardly the first...
electrolux has had prototypes since 1997...

The First?
What about Electrolux Trilobite?
Electrolux claims they were first! Trilobite Pressrelease -
Not the first, and not the coolest
Electrolux has one, named the Trilobite.
It is more advanced, can do stuff like plugging in automatically and resuming where it left off - plus it looks really cool!
Only drawback is the price, 1500 euros, around 1500 US $, I think.
More at Electrolux -
Wash, clean, mown the lawn...
I want a robot that can do more than take pictures of my house and switch channels on the TV. The company Husquarna has an automatic mower, Electrolux has an automatic vacuum cleaner. This is what I want at home. If it can walk the dog and wake me up in the morning too, I'll be really happy.
-
But for chrissake...
From the article;
The mower was developed in collaboration with lawnmower and chainsaw company Husqvarna, part of the Sweden-based AB Electrolux home appliance maker.
The next step is an automatic vacuum cleaner, Bright said.
Husqvarna has sold a self-propelled, self-navigating autonomous lawnmower for YEARS.
The automatic vacuum cleaner (also fully autonomous, fully self-navigating) was introduced over a year ago.
(Linked pages are in Swedish, sorry about that. I did not find an English page at these companies' sites.) -

Re: Fridge
Or, it can be a fridge, like the ScreenFridge

Other robot vacuumsI had heard of Electrolux making a tiny one that can get into all the crazy nooks and crannies that regular vaccums cannot. I think they claimed 90% coverage, while average regular coverage is around 75% (reciting from faded memory, could be wrong numbers). I couldn't find any mention on their site but I did find their Real Fridge Cam, which I found a bit amusing.
Aha, a good ol' Google search returned their link: http://www3.electrolux.se/robot/. Apparently, it goes over cables without any trouble. That's impressive.
For other robot vacuums, here's a short list:
- http://diwww.epfl.ch/lami/robot s/K-family/vacuum.html
- http://www.eureka.com/whatsnew/robotvac.h tm. Hmmm, this looks, *exactly* like Electrolux's, and the two pics there are identical to ones found on Electrolux's site.
I want that Electrolux one, though.
I haven't seen the Dyson one from the article. The site appears to be down hard. - http://diwww.epfl.ch/lami/robot s/K-family/vacuum.html

Home automation (Elextrolux)
Best I found was this page: Rob's Home Automation Page which mentions a few possible choices. I'm working on some other software to build a computer in my fridge for this purpose. Electrolux has a prototype of a similar design called a Screenfridge Now this would be a cool Linux project! e-mail, ipmasq, firewall, home automation, alarm systems, etc. I use Festival for voice synthesis on mine, I just need a good voice recognition module!
