There was an entire robot expo
This BBC story seems to be a fresh rewrite of this old National Geographic piece: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2005/06/0
6 10_050610_robot.html ... which was blogged here in mid-month: http://icold.blogspot.com/2005_07_01_icold_archive .html The news event unfortunately did not make it to the robot expo's event site here: http://www-1.expo2005.or.jp/en/robot/robot_project _00.html If you search on co-creator "Hiroshi Ishiguru" you get little more than this story, however. -
Not a world ROBOT expo
It should be noted that the Aichi World Expo is not a Robot Expo, but a Energy Conservation Expo.
It also showcases the latest technology from many major Japanese companies.
The Expo Site, in English -
Featured at Expo 2005This is just one of many insanely cool (mostly) Japanese technologies being showcased at Expo 2005 Aichi, which just opened last week. Other highlights include Toyota's robot-laden pavilion, Hitachi's interactive VR safari, the world's first 360-degree fully hemispherical movie projector, driverless buses zipping around the site, etc. See Wikitravel's guide for more.
And yes, I'm going there next week.
:PCheers,

GOOD LINK REVISED

Re:Robots Expo still far away from Japan Robots,
Your link 404ed, but I explored a little and found mention of a "Partner robot with artificial tongue", a "multifingered haptic interface robot", and a "Humanoid probe robot".
No robots with vaginas as near as I can tell. I'm unbelivably disappointed, but my girlfriend* is nagging me to book plane tickets to Japan now.
*This is a lie. -
Re:Klaatu?
There certainly still are world fairs. And this year's in Japan will have lots of robots, too.
