Re:Clever?
My mobile phone provider has had something similar for a while. If you visit 0.facebook.com you get to browse Facebook for free. It offers a minimal version of the website, but still allows you to read your message, and update your status. It's good for everybody involved. Because the site is very minimalistic, the it's less traffic on the network. The user gets free access to Facebook. And Facebook get more people visiting their site, more often. If companies want to pay for my bandwidth then that's better than me paying for it. Although somehow I think they are getting billed $1 per MB like the customers.

Read it for yourself
Seriously, read the advertizing guidelines policy for facebook:
https://www.facebook.com/ad_guidelines.php
It starts off like this:
"At Facebook, we believe that ads should contribute to and be consistent with the overall user experience. The best ads are those that are tailored to individuals based on how they and their friends interact and affiliate with the brands, artists, and businesses they care about. These guidelines are not intended to serve as legal advice and adherence to these guidelines does not necessarily constitute legal compliance. Advertisers are responsible for ensuring that their ads comply with all applicable laws, statutes, and regulations." -

Re:Do they turn up in the downloads?
Lol I'd ask if anything ever materialized, but sadly, I believe I already know the answer -__-
I've requested my data to be downloaded from facebook 3 times now since my first comment here. Each time, I've gotten the following email from facebook promptly after I've made the request:
" You recently requested a copy of yourFacebookdata. We'll send you another email with a link to yourdownloadwhen it's ready. For security reasons, the link will only work for a few days after being sent, so please monitor your email for our message. If the link doesn't work by the time you read your email, you'll have to restart thedownload. Learn what data may be in yourdownload:https://www.facebook.com/help/405183566203254 If you didn't request adownloadof your information, your account may be compromised. Please visit the Help Center to secure it:https://www.facebook.com/help/203305893040179 "
So far I've not gotten a second email response from facebook any of the times that I've made the request. (Yes I've checked my spam filter). I do have a lot of photos and videos on facebook and my only real guess is that my account is larger than what their system is setup to export. Though I receive no error or message to that effect so it is merely a guess.
I've had a similar problem with Google Takeout and have not been able to get a copy of all my Picasa Web Albums downloaded from their service. I've paid for storage space for years, but due to changes with Google+ and the fact that I'm paying for other online storage / backup services now, I want to download a full copy of all my albums from Google, which isn't working out.
Luckily I do have a copy of all of my data that is on Google, however, I don't have it organized in the same fashion that I do on Picasa Web albums, thus the reason I had really wanted to download a copy of it.
Sad to say unless something gets fixed with facebook I won't be able to complete our little experiment here. -

"It’s free and always will be." Yeah right
It might be about privacy to some, but I was referring to the claim on the front page of Facebook that "It’s free and always will be."

Re:Non-anonymous comments are worse
This is completely true... As someone who "administers" a Facebook page that is against a certain tradition that many people in America find very touching. They will come to your page, post vile and disgusting comments with very graphic threats, insults, and downright stupidity. Talking with them does nothing, it just fuels their anger. Eventually, the entire conversation devolves to you swearing back at them because it really makes you rage to even read their comments. Note, this isn't even for a religious/political topic. The mob is cruel, the mob is relentless, and they will do anything they can to attack anything that they disagree with as a whole.
And if you want to see a truly vile cesspit of Facebook and supposedly "righteous" individuals, go no further than here: Bitchy Waiter. Read the comments, and watch how angry and hateful the "servers" are to people that upset them. The internet brings out the true/real face of society, not the pretty fairy-tale one we all want to believe in.

Re:Do they turn up in the downloads?
Update, Dec. 16, 2013: This article was updated to clarify that it is the browser code, not Facebook, that reads whatever you type.
From TFA above, it said that the data first collected is not directly from Facebook but from the client's browser. In other words, Facebook is taking advantage of browser's insight (data).
Other information we receive about you
We also receive other types of information about you:
* We receive data about you whenever you use or are running Facebook, such as when you look at another person's timeline, send or receive a message, search for a friend or a Page, click on, view or otherwise interact with things, use a Facebook mobile app, or make purchases through Facebook.
* When you post things like photos or videos on Facebook, we may receive additional related data (or metadata), such as the time, date, and place you took the photo or video.
* We receive data from or about the computer, mobile phone, or other devices you use to install Facebook apps or to access Facebook, including when multiple users log in from the same device. This may include network and communication information, such as your IP address or mobile phone number, and other information about things like your internet service, operating system, location, the type (including identifiers) of the device or browser you use, or the pages you visit. For example, we may get your GPS or other location information so we can tell you if any of your friends are nearby, or we could request device information to improve how our apps work on your device.
* We receive data whenever you visit a game, application, or website that uses Facebook Platform or visit a site with a Facebook feature (such as a social plugin), sometimes through cookies. This may include the date and time you visit the site; the web address, or URL, you're on; technical information about the IP address, browser and the operating system you use; and, if you are logged in to Facebook, your User ID.
* Sometimes we get data from our affiliates or our advertising partners, customers and other third parties that helps us (or them) deliver ads, understand online activity, and generally make Facebook better. For example, an advertiser may tell us information about you (like how you responded to an ad on Facebook or on another site) in order to measure the effectiveness of - and improve the quality of - ads.
(source: https://www.facebook.com/full_data_use_policy)From the quote above (from their web site), it pretty much covers the 'download all your data' part in a vaguely wording way (bulletin #1). I guess someone has to sue Facebook to see if their policies actually cover the way they are doing now.

Re:A simpler approach
Actually no.
Researchgruppen is an ultra-leftist organization, run by people who have committed assaults. They are offering a 50 000 SKR bounty for someone to hack the Flashback site to de-anonymize their political opponents there.
These "racist" sites are the ones which post news without Swedish white pixelization and political correctness. However it is true that there are comments which are negative - just like comments in any media outlet.
What Expressen and Researchgruppen did was that they de-anonymized their political opponents. They are also targeting people who have nothing to do with Swedish Democrats, just ordinary people who disagree with the nation wide consensus of immigration and do not want lose their jobs for expressing their opinions.
As a Finnish citizen I am very worried of the state of democracy in Sweden. Swedish media is hell bent to destroy Swedish Democrats and they use any means. Swedish ultra left is extremely violent and seems to enjoy total freedom. It is not the ultra right or racists who do the majority of political violence in Sweden.
Outing political opponents and making a illegal registers of identities breaks Swedish and EU laws. Harassing people because of this also breaks laws, anonymous or not, people have right to express their opinions in the network and ordinary citizens can not expect to be chased by the media or extremely violent political groups because of that.
We Finns always joke how Swedes "Diskuterar" so much of everything but it seems we are little bit outdated on that belief. Swedish media do not want to have civilized discussion and extremist groups are using violence to advance their cause.

Help promote our WhiteHouse.Gov petition today!
TechFreedom is part of a broad coalition of dozens of groups across the political spectrum are joining in a Day of Action TODAY to drive up the signature count on our WhiteHouse.gov petition: http://wh.gov/lBibY We've got nearly 45k signatures but need to hit 100k by December 12. That's the threshold the WhiteHouse requires for getting a response to a petition. (Remember, they raised it from 50k after that "Please build a Deathstar" petition got 50k.) So please take a moment to sign the petition and share it with your friends! Re:North Carolina...
White trash, eh? I know a few high-tech companies that would disagree with you.
You know, small companies that you've probably never heard of, like:
Google ( the Lenoir NC data center is featured: https://www.google.com/about/datacenters/inside/streetview/ )
Apple (Their Maiden, NC, data center is a model for green data centers: https://www.apple.com/environment/renewable-energy/ )
EMC (Not only do they have a huge datacenter/Center of Excellence in Durham, which earned LEED Gold status ( http://www.emc.com/about/news/press/2013/20130314-01.htm ) but they also manufacture storage arrays in their Apex plant ( http://www.emc.com/about/news/press/us/2006/08082006-4543.htm ) and have a significant R&D presence in RTP)
Facebook ( The Forest City Data Center: https://www.facebook.com/ForestCityDataCenter ) Oh, and Rutherford County is very rural.Further, North Carolina has one of the world's premier research and education networks, NCREN ( http://ncren.net/ ), which just underwent significant expansion over the last two years.
And the list of high-tech and higher education excellence goes on and on.
North Carolinians even know about Slashdot.
:-)Having read the actual article, and not the biased summary, it seems a reasonable decision for the director to make. There is a place for that type of documentary; and it would certainly be a good thing to show in the right venue. And I'm sure the director had a difficult time with the decision.
But, then again, just exactly what does Slashdot commentary have to do with the scientific process anyway? (Yes, I do understand real science, and I also don't have any need to prove that to anyone).

Each FB user needs a distinct SMS number
In order to perform certain actions on Facebook with a non-edu e-mail account, or in some cases just to log in, a user needs to verify an account by linking a unique mobile phone number, shared by no other Facebook user, that can send and receive SMS text messages. This costs money if a user uses a land line or a wireless phone that can't text (such as several landline-replacement adapters sold by wireless carriers), if there are fewer mobile phones in a household than Facebook users (my cousin's case), or if the user is on one of the pay-per-text plans typical of low-minute plans intended to replace payphones (my case). I am not the only affected person. Google facebook roadblock phone to see others.

I love how this asshole is saying code has no practical value, and yet the only reason said asshole has a job is because someone coded the OS, web server, browser, the routers and switches, and the website itself that he's posting from to claim this.
And soon, someone will code the news aggregator and put a few monkeys on keyboards to put this guy out of a job. Oh, wait...

Re:Telco oligopoly
i live in Ã-rebro, Sweden.
My Internet provider option since year 2000 (?) has been Bredbandsbolaget.
By ethernet they offer 1 gbps (500-1000 mbps), 250/60 mbps, 260/6-10, 100/60, 100/6-10, 10 (6-10.) Haven't seen the ranges previously, guess that may be a regulation thing or just to not disappoint people. But yeah, 10, 100, 250 or 1000 mbps with an option to pick whatever you want faster upload or not to.
However almost all apartments in the city I suppose, and I think all (which is likely most) of the ones owned by the company ran by the municipally offer StadsnÃt.
I can get it too and it's a network with no service by default and Ã-BO adds 75 SEK / month to your bill for accessing that network and then you pay whatever content provider you want, there I can pick from:
Bredband2, T3, Tele2, Bredbandsbolaget, Bahnhof, AllTele, Tyfon, UniversalTelecom, Telia.
And in speeds ranging from 1/1 mbps to 100/100 mbps.I can even get StadsnÃt here:
https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=428621049459&l=9ba9c4d186
https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=428626479459&l=eafafceac1

Thanks to some EU thing which help paid for getting access on such places, cost a little more to hook up there but the option, I suppose the providers are the same or about the same.Beyond that there's the DSL options which may be limited and 3G/4G options either with voice or with no voice. The cheap ones at least (which is cheaper than the wired connections) seem to be capped but they are very cheap (I can get no limit on amount but slow speed for my phone for 57 SEK = $8 or so / month and I think the decent speed but limited data amount ones cost in the $12 or so area) and a friend got somewhere around 10 mbps at the location shown above with his phone.
Many phones isn't locked to a provider and you can easily get one which isn't at least and you can order 3G/4G dongle or WiFi access point of course, there's not so many (GSM/3G/4G) network owners in Sweden (I don't know how many) but a rather decent amount of companies selling network access but you got quite a few options there too.
Anyway my options is far from ONE single provider.
Personally I think the fiber everywhere + let someone sell bandwidth in those cables is (was, the future may be wireless) the correct way of going.

Better That Than TitsDoes Facebook still ban breastfeeding pictures? Just wondering.....
Yup.FB page Bitchin' Parents is the latest to be targeted by FB censors for sharing their members breastfeeding images. As a result they have been asking members to share their BF images here instead. Incredibly sad this is still an issue on FB. http://www.facebook.com/ParentsUncut

LGPL Open Graphics IP
gpl-gpu kickstarter launches tomorrow. A fully LGPL 2D/ 3D graphics accelerator written in Verilog. Currently running in an Arria IIgx. GPLGPU Kickstarter
-
This is what they're saying on Facebook
-
Open Graphics (GPL-GPU)
Just thought I'd post that our kickstarter goes live on 10/9 for an LGPL graphics core. It is a complete 2D/3D Verilog implementation. The current version is PCI based and runs on Altera/ Xilinx or ASIC. 100% clean and synthesizable Verilog. We have a number of stretch goals that bring new features, generic interfaces so you could run on a PCIe FPGA board or an SOC part. The ultimate stretch goal would be a Unified Shader design.
We have pictures and will have video from the FPGA board on the kickstarter site (live on 10/9),
Our Facebook page (pictures and live now): Silicon Spectrum FB Page
Our Home page (out of date): Silicon Spectrum Home
GPLGPU.com (not live yet): GPL GPU site (not currently live)
It won't beat an Nvidia or AMD part in price/ performance (unless someone wants to do an ASIC based on it), but the source is open and no risk of ever not knowing what is inside in the future.

Re:people = shit
Actually it wasn't all that much about jellyfish as much as what the fuck we're doing to all sea life, sea bottoms, wild life in general, insects, forests, our water, the climate.
The comments about how this and that have to go always come from people who benefit on the death of those individuals either by direct usage and sales or by getting rid of competition.
But it's very obvious who the biggest issue is, who's the largest predator, the one who really throw ecological systems out of balance, poison the planet and so on.
The fishing fleets are way over-dimensioned and I kinda wish someone just sank every ship they saw but that wouldn't be environmental friendly so I'd rather see they got confiscated / all usage of them as far as fishing goes was banned.
Over here in Sweden the Naturvårdsverket (Natural care ministry) always decide that we need LESS of the predators and how half of the current amount of wolves and less when what we had just a few years ago when they started to shoot some to try to get support for bringing wolves from other countries here to solve the inbreeding within the population. They think 170 is enough. Others say 700. And still some hunter organization (?) think it should be split into one for nature preservation and one for hunting because they don't take care of the hunters interests..
Damn idiots for all I care.
Take this picture for example:
Facebook group picture - shoot wolves
"One family... murdering another. And they call it ''sport''. It is murder. Please, stop the killing!"How sane is this person?
Another facebook group picture - tortured mouse
Daily mail linkThis is what humans do:
Facebook group picture - 36.000 elephants killed last year
There was some other picture about the last rhinos in some reserve having been shot to, there was 300 or so there a short while ago but now they are gone. Good job idiots!More dead wolves:
Reminds me of a picture of some chick with a dead giraffe around her neck. Yeah, you're so awesome! Managed to kill the exotic prey. How amazingly good you are!People = shit:
Facebook group picture - burned dogOff topic as fuck but damn. Worry about a few manets?
Because those are the problem? And yeah, in some Swedish lake they kinda dredged a lake.. For fish. Because they wanted to get rid of the "crap fish" as they viewed it because the lake had little oxygen. Yeah, but how was that situation created? Where did all the predator fish go?
It's disgusting to send out freaking robots to kill of sea life just because you consider them too many / have messed up the balance of the seas. It's going after the symptoms rather than the cause.
I kinda get frustrated than the Bill Gates foundation make a post about how many people manage to survive what earlier killed them. But then again (as I may have already said?) it seems like humans who become richer (survive better?) get less children so I don't know what's worst. But then again rich people do the most damage to the planet so
...Was some TV show about sand and how we're kinda running out and take it up from the seas but when you take up sand outside the shore of some place other sand will fall down to fill its place. Anyway the problem is

Several Barilla's competitors expressed support for LGBT equality. Buitoni, an Italian food group owned by Nestle, was probably the first one to post a photo on their company Facebook page with the caption 'At Casa Buitoni, there is room for everyone.' Buitoni US division also posted a photo on their facebook page as explained on http://www.inquisitr.com/970331/barilla-pasta-boycott-addressed-by-competitors-buitoni-bertolli/

Re:Netflix
netflixUK != netflixUS
others were able to determine what was happening before it happened.. this was published a week before the premiere.
"This has led to high rates of piracy for hit US series like Game of Thrones, True Blood, and The Walking Dead. "Netflix has been instrumental in making Breaking Bad the success that it is," says Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan, echoing previous comments on the platform. "I am delighted that fans [in the UK] will be able to enjoy the end of Breaking Bad on Netflix so soon after it airs in the US."
is theverge too US centric?

http://crave.cnet.co.uk/software/new-breaking-bad-on-netflix-uk-before-lunchtime-today-50011961/
https://www.facebook.com/NetflixUKmisinformation is not the same as misinformed (or just unaware)
let's turn the tables.
I like the Sherlock reboot. If I go to BBC One and look for the schedule and find that it doesn't match the US schedule.. is this misinformation? No, because I'm smart enough to know that BBC1 doesn't give a shite about what Americans want to watch (and they shouldn't have to). For the US sched, I check my LOCAL PBS station.
