Re:Oh no that sucks!
Consistency across the union makes no sense when economically we're 11 different nations with distinctive spending habits.

Re:Real Science!
Sure, welcome to the science of 2012! Unfortunately, that means it's not news.
Oh, I was going to say that!
Maybe in another five years we will have actual products that can be bought!
I saw back in the 1990s that some reasearcher had made some spoons coated with superhydrophobic coatings that he used as honey spoons - I would love to purchase something like that. I'm still waiting.
We're living in the future... maybe next year.

Re:What Type of Truck?
Do you know what the specs for a typical trash truck(3mpg) are and the battery you would need to run such a platform? How would you charge 15 or 20 of these monsters at night? (if you are lucky enough for battery to last during the day) The up front costs would be astronomical.
No need to imagine hypotheticals, you could just ask the guys who are doing it.
They seem pretty bullish on the idea and they've put their money where their mouths are, so to speak.

Google should team up with China
China has recently launched a Helium filled airship that can do the following characteristics:
* Can be parked at the Edge Of Space
* Flies on solar power for up to six months at a time
* Has a constant line of sight over a hundred thousand square miles
* Is reusable
More info on the Helium air ship are available @

Disclaimer: I submitted a story regarding the Helium airship on 24th, Oct, 2015 to Slashdot but the submission was rejected

Re:Prisoners... Why bother with schools?
San Quentin prison started training inmates to code recently. Plenty of good articles about it out there. We have to live with these people on their release. Makes sense to train them so they can actually integrate into society rather than live on the fringes and risk re-offending for lack of opportunity.

Re:Deconstructing diversity in tech
The interesting thing is in the 80s there was even fewer girls into computers then now.
Well that would be a lot more interesting if it were true. Lets see what the department of labor says about that:
http://www.dol.gov/wb/factshee...
Scroll down to the 2nd graph "Employed computer systems analysts, scientists by sex 1983 - 2001"
In the 80s women made up nearly half, and the gap has increased. So there were in fact more women computer scientists and systems analysts in the 80 than now. Not less. That pretty much trashes your entire thesis.
But you know what, I completely agree with you that men and women are likely biased towards different things. And I agree its pretty likely in a world with no sexism men would still be prevalent in some fields and women prevalent in others. I don't dispute that. I'm not suggesting every job needs to be 50:50 men and women or: sexism !!
But just because that is true, that doesn't mean sexism doesn't exist, and isn't a problem in any industry.
Additionally, when the women who ARE in tech leave tech they most frequently cite the culture as being the primary issue. That doesn't line up with your thesis that they aren't interested in the subject... they WERE interested in the subject, they enjoyed the subject, they left in droves because of the culture. And yeah... I have cites for that... three different studies.

Not totally convinced? That's fine; you owe it to your own intellectual integrity to accept that maybe the situation is more complicated than "women don't like computers as much as you do" after all.
So when you talk about sexism, give me a fucking break. No. Scratch that. There is a problem of sexism in tech : women are privileged over men.
In the sense that all these over-the-top-sexist (pro-feminist) and highly ineffective programs to get women back into tech exist, I completely agree. They don't solve anything, and if anything make things worse. They are part of the problem, but they are not the entire problem by a long shot.

Re:smart people, including Bill Gates
The real problem is that the leisure society we all dream about isn't compatible with 7+ billion people. Why? Because the earth is too small to account for all resources exploitation necessary to perform these luxury automations.
Malthusian Nonsense. You could fit the entire world's population in New Zealand.
http://www.fastcoexist.com/301...Do you understand the concept of "resources"? Of course the earth is large enough to have 7 billions biped mammals roughly 6 feet high. Densely compacted, it could even fit in less than that. Sustaining their energy consumption is a completely different story.
You should check that video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?...
How much space do you think it takes to allow you to change your phone every 4 months or to take the plane to see your mom on holidays? Do you still think the earth is big enough to sustain the energy requirement of 7 billion people living in the leisure society?

95% of hydrogen is made from methane (wikipedia told me, "hydrogen vehicle" entry http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H... )
Methane is uh, made from cow farts. Cow Fart Collector, anyone? ( http://www.fastcoexist.com/302... )
so, now the fun part. Why not just make a Hydrogen Fueled vehicle that has room for a Cow

Floating Atolls
Floating atoll remediation of civilization's environmental footprint would, in addition to permanently rewilding agricultural lands and containing all urban population effluent (including CO2, CH4, N2O and CFC emissions) for 10 billion people at higher than US standard of living, sequester on the order of a teratonne of CO2 from the oceans and atmosphere.
The Seasteading Institute is being left behind by AT Design Office under contract to the Chinese construction firm CCCC, as they proceed with the pilot project to build a 10 square km floating city. What the Seasteading Institute has going for them is their association with Breakout Labs via Peter Thiel, as it supports fluid dynamics research for of the Atmospheric Vortex Engine. Although the AVE would be advantageous even with advanced nuclear technology, any radical reduction (less than 1 cent/kWh) in electric cost -- with or without the AVE -- will suffice to enable the rest of the floating atoll remediation. This is one of a few things that Marshall Savage didn't have the technical chops to address -- the other major things being photobioreactor technology and the notion of atolls unifying beachfront real estate demand with wave break for fragile (hence economic) PBRs.
At this point, it appears to be an entirely feasible economic proposition given the requisite lowering of cost for pollution free electric generation.
If the AVE experiments currently underway attest its economy, the Seasteading Institute can take the floating atoll proposal, package it up the way Mashall Savage should have, and present it to the Chinese. They'll bite.

Re:Boomerang
Sounds like chunks of themes ripped from the Fourth Realm series by John Twelve Hawks. Being off the grid is one thing, but also randomizing your choices helps another. Working with maps of CCTV to find alternative routes, and providing the double work of having 'usable' profiles to hide behind.

Re:Gallium = Sticky
A while back there was research out of MIT for new coatings to keep substances sticking to the walls of bottles. http://www.fastcoexist.com/1679878/mits-freaky-non-stick-coating-keeps-ketchup-flowing. How about something like this? For the thermometers. Not sure I want that stuff in my heart either.
