Re:The Henry Ford
Another strong agreement for both The Henry Ford and Greenfield Village.
Right next to it is the automotive hall of fame which is quite a bit smaller but a must for any car lover interested in the inventors behind their inventions: http://automotivehalloffame.org/
There seems to be this car thing we're all into in South East Michigan
:-) .(in b4 bankruptcy: shut it up)
While you're in the midwest you should also go to Chicago's Field Museum (its huge, you would need a whole day): http://www.fieldmuseum.org/
The Museum of Science and Industry (they have a captured U-Boat and an enigma machine there http://www.msichicago.org/whats-here/exhibits/u-505/ !): http://www.msichicago.org/
And you can always stand in front of the Seurat like Cameron did in Ferris Bueller's Day Off at the Art Institute of Chicago: http://www.artic.edu/ -
Chicago
While others have mentioned both the Field Museum and the Museum of Science and Industry, it should be noted that they are co-located with the (also excellent) Shedd Aquarium and Adler Planetarium. Not far away is the world-class Art Institute of Chicago. Much of this is the legacy of the 1893 Chicago World Fair, and in terms of density of world-class museums, is more bang for your time and dollar that you'll get anywhere outside of Washington DC (Smithsonian, etc) and perhaps London. You can get a multi-day pass to all of these museums for anywhere from about $70/person, and it is well worth it.

Re:Pirates!!
Even better than Pirates! at the Field Museum is the Dinosaur Exhibit, Sue, the world's largest, most complete and most famous T. Rex., and the Tsavo Lions upon which the film "The Ghost and the Darkness" was based.

Chicago Museums
Chicago does have the Museum of Science and Industry, but also houses the Field Museum, Adler Planetarium, and the Shedd Aquarium. While it seems that this would be less interesting, it's worth mentioning the Chicago Art Institute too. All of these museums are fairly close to each other (with the exception of the Museum of Science and Industry).

Big Bird
That article is horrible, and the posting is also not so good. Here's a link to the press release from the Field Museum in Chicago, where one of the co-authors of the Nature article works:
http://www.fieldmuseum.org/museum_info/press/press _sinovenator.htm
And here's a link to a non-subscription site that's carrying the Chicago Tribune's article, which a lot of outlets seem to be carrying because it compares the dinosaur to Sesame Street's Big Bird:
http://www.newsday.com/news/health/chi-0510130118o ct13,0,1942769.story?coll=ny-leadhealthnews-headli nes
Both articles said that buitreraptor probably could not fly. -

Chicago Field Museum has some good meteor examples
I was at the Field Museum this past week and got a real kick out of the meteor exhibits. They had several large metalic meteors that were out in the open free to touch. Putting my hand on it and thinking about it flying though space, to be rudely blocked by the planet earth. It wasn't it's fault that there was some stupid planet in the way... Anyway, they also had several examples of meteorites hitting houses. In once case it went through the guys garage, through his car and bounced off the cars muffler, ending up sitting on the car seat. Another one took out a guys gutter. The pictures are pretty funny, all the guys looked pretty pissed off, but it was in the 20s or 30s, maybe people didn't smile back then.

an early primate sketch and an evolutionary tree
The Field Museum in Chicago, where this study was done, has an nice press release on this here.
They also released a sketch of what the earliest common ancestor for primates might have looked like, and a nice evolutionary tree which might put some of this into perspective for some of you.

A real, big, dinosaur
I'm surprised that this didn't come up before (at least I can't find it mentioned anywhere). The Field Museum, Chicago, unveiled Sue back on May 17th. Sue is the largest, most complete T.rex specimen known to exist.Full details and additional information can be found at http://www.fieldmuseum.org/sue/
