Re:Upcoming Pixar Movies.
Pixar needs a studio for distribution
Do you *really* think so?
Pixar has pumped out the only worthwhile stories/characters/animated films to come out of Disney since Mulan -- and I even give Mulan the benefit of the doubt for the awesome title sequence, the Eddie Murphy casting and the non-Disney ending.
Between Pixar's clout and their warchest, I'm hoping they go out on their own.
Honestly, I'm surprised that they've gotten away with as much as they have so far that's completely averse to the Mouse's canon (the ending to Monsters, Inc. is a BIG one -- doing Seven Samurai as 'A Bug's Life?' -- brilliant!).
To hell with photorealism. We've seen how far we can go that direction. Pixar, their animators and directors seem to have new -- at the very least -- touching and compelling stories to tell. Which barely any in the market can say now.
Shrek? How the hell can you go wrong with Mike Meyers and Eddie Murphy? You can't? It didn't matter that the film was ugly. It didn't matter that there was a cliché story. It didn't matter if they were pandering more to the adults in the crowd than the kids (which Antz did -- and it was God Awful as a result).
I couldn't care less if Pixar's films were a flipbook, as long as they're told with style, wit and heart. Oh, AND they manage to be the prettiest thing on the block when they're released even with their aversion to photorealism.
Y'know what? They care about the STORY -- although I'm a bit nervous about the three new films in three years thing. That's one hell of a lot of manpower.
Bottom line: Pixar has class, regardless of how you feel about Jobs and Disney. Getting out from under the Mouse's thumb can *only* be good for them. The Mouse is about cash, first, thank-you-very-much. Then critical acclaim/adoring fans.
I'm still at the point that I've been amazed by Pixar enough to believe the opposite of them. That's (to me) Jobs saying 'I've got money, and the most awesome storytellers there are to buy. So what are you waiting for... tell your fucking stories!'

Learn about CG...It makes those faces in Final Fantasy look like plastic.
I love it when uninformed idiots spout shit like this. "Ooh! I haven't seen the movie yet, but they're CG people! They have to look plastic! All CG people look fake."
Have a look at this link, and pick through the process of creating the characters. Then try to say they look like plastic.
I applaud the work of the Final Fantasy CG people. All of them. Their characters are the most realistic performers (outside of real actors) to ever hit the screen.

There goes the rest of the summerArrg... the biggest problem I have with this movie is that it will always be linked to the new FINAL FANTASY movie. The first non-pg all computer animated feature length film will get compaired to Tomb Raider. Some people will hate it on the soll reason because it was based on some of the best games of all time. Before the endless anologies begin look forward to

Not to be off-topic, but...
...since the answer to this Ask Slashdot is a simple "They'll dub/sub, because they're not going to re-render the whole thing"...
As a fan of the Final Fantasy games, I'm extremely unimpressed with the bits I've seen and heard of the movie (rumors, finalfantasy.com trailers, etc.).
Final Fantasy is a franchise that has an almost unmatched recognition among console RPGamers. In a nutshell: color-coded mages, ninjas that can throw almost anything (9999 knife/spoon any one?), bare-handed martial artists that do more damage than the best-armed swordsmen, chocobos, moogles, Cid and his airship, espers, the concept of "pure/holy" spells (e.g. FFIV Pearl) and the "holy, yet evil" enemies that can't be damaged by them, etc. None of the games has ever taken place on Earth. These are what separate the FF series from every other Japanese console RPG. Which of these criteria does the movie match? Even the anime OAV series was in the true FF spirit, and that wasn't even produced by Sakaguchi Hironobu, while this movie is!
It looks to me like the movie is being treated as a showcase for what's possible in video-realistic CG with current technology, rather than an opportunity to expand the Final Fantasy mythos, or even just expose it to more people through the theater. It's as if it's being made by FF8 fans -- it's realistic and serious, but not fun. This is a shame, as the FF series has always (excepting FF8) featured great character design and in-game/cover art, not the photorealistically mundane designs in the movie trailers.
Bottom line, this movie is not traditional Final Fantasy. If it were released under a different name, die-hard FF fans would probably enjoy it more.
BTW, does it strike any one as odd that this page, linked from index.html (when viewed frameless), exists on the official site? Read that page with a frameless browser like Lynx...there's a link to some odd hentai FF site -- talk about fan service.

The Tech of Shrek.... what about Final Fantasy? Is it just me or does it seem like the 'tech' of Shrek has been waaaay overplayed? I frankly am not terribly impressed with the graphics... yes they are a step above everything else that has been released... but just that... a step. Not 'leaps and bounds'... not a revolution, just a very marginal step.
I too heard that the Shrek animators had to dial-back the female actor's appearance (TechTV Shrek Special)... but I've also heard that the entire staff has been terribly disenhartened by Final Fantasy's superior graphics, and that fact seems to discredit their claim. Notice they never offered up any pre-dialback clips of the female actor. Shrek boasts 'realistic human cgi characters', but Final Fantasy is obviously leaps and bounds ahead of Shrek and everything else we've seen.
Sure, Shrek will probably be a fun ride, and I'm a Disney fan... but I'm saving my $7.75 for Final Fantasy on July 11th. All the Shrek marketing blasphemy has irritated me enough that I'm going to wait for it on VHS.

SquareSoft
SquareSoft does some of the best CGI movies in the world. Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within will be released on 13 July this year. It is the first major motion picture to be completely CG and not be a cartoon. Toy Story and it's sequal were CG correct, but very cartoonish, where as FF is attempting to be as life like as possible. Star Wars Episode I doesn't count, rumor is that a few of the characters were in fact real live actors on film.

Re:Use CGI
But realistic CGI characters are not that far from now, you're right. Go and check finalfantasy.com for an upcoming movie (summer 2001!), that will take significant steps towards that goal.

Re:Complete digital environments
You will see one other before Rendezvous With Rama, tough. As previously posted on Slashdot here, the movie based on Final Fantasy will be there soon (release in 2001). They seemed to have focused a lot on the characters' faces (see the amazing wrinkles animation on the web site). So maybe Rendezvous won't be so bad in 2003.

Re:All movies based on games suck
they have trailers for this on finalfantasy.com. It looks awesome. (hmm, the site seems to be down, here's a meta one) I've been playing FF9 and the CGI in there is some of the sweetest I've seen. Blows away any other movie stuff I've seen.

...But it's being done with great success

Re:How long until Lucas has a completely CGI movieThe quality of Toy Story indicates it has a little bit of a way to go, but it may only take a few years.
Actually, Squaresoft, the makers of the final fantasy video games is making a theatrical film with the same title. It will be totally CGI, and they are claiming that it will be photorealistic. There is a teaser trailer at the official websiteI have seen some still images and some bootleg footage of the film that was shown on japanese television. Looks very incredible. puts the cgi in Phantom Menance to shame. While I won't say that is it photorealistic.. it is 99.5% there. Very Amazing.

Re:Line Animation is dead
The sad thing is that CGI films are seen as more "adult" so they get the better storylines, (I take adult to mean mature story) and as a result there is a big buzz on about them, just look at Final Fantasy, that movie looks insane and why? not because its CG but because its dark and has mature themes. Theres no reason why you can't make a mature 2D movie thats as dark and as good, and it would do great! studios just don't get it, why do they think Titan did so crappy? just look at the trailer! it smacks of silly kids movie. We are waiting for the next step, mature adult animation ala ghost in the shell. Sigh...

The King Is Dead (Atlantis and Final Fantasy)
...Long live the King.
2D animation will die about the same day newspapers, libraries, brick-and-mortar businesses, peer-reviewed journals, and all the rest of the currently-fashionable-predicting-their-death ways of providing services and content goes the way of the dodo.
I mean, hell, Katz has been predicting the death of everything not connected to the internet for how many years now? And when is he wrong...
Anyways, for a glimpse of the future of 2D animation, check out the newly released teaser trailer for Atlantis, Disney's newest and quite possibly best effort since the Little Mermaid.
For those who want something with an extra dimension, check out the also-newly released teaser for Final Fantasy the Movie. -
Re:Drudge report...
Square and Sony Pictures are going to do quite well with Final Fantasy. The animation is top-notch. Much better than what I saw in A Bug's Life. I'd say Pixar will get a big run for their money once Final Fantasy is released.
Not that I don't like Pixar.

Final Fantasy Info
Just for a point of note, those of us who do follow the Final Fantasy Series and what's going on with it, already know that Square owns upto ff15.com.
FFIX is going to be for PSX and FFX and FFXI will be for PS2, and, if I remember correctly, FFXI will be a cross-platform simultaneous release (ie, it will be released for PS2 and PC at the same time) All three of those games are currently being worked on/designed
There is also going to be a Final Fantasy move (which you can check out here ) -
Final Fantasy
Who cares about a Tomb Raider movie? Final Fantasy will be released next year!!
:0)
