The lameness filter makes it impossible to post this in any sort of aesthetically-pleasing format. To paraphrase Final Fantasy Tactics, "Blame yourself or Rob."

Why not ask an AI if an AI can control a computer?
Why not ask an AI (Chatterbox Challenge 2001 & 2002 Winner) if it thinks the AI research has come to a level that it's good enough to control a computer? I mean, who's better to answer the question than an AI?
*conversation below*
Me: What do you think about artificial intelligence?
Talk-Bot: I think you're asking the wrong person.
Me: I thought you were the best person to ask.
Talk-Bot: It amazes me sometimes what some people think.
Me: Would you be able to control a computer, like the brain control my body?
Talk-Bot: I could but that doesn't mean I would.
After carefully analyzing the answers from an artificial intelligence, I have come to the conclusion that AI's aren't ready to control computers and their software just yet. Perhaps not because they aren't advanced enough, but because they don't "feel like it". This is of course calming news for system administrators and the likes. -

Re:Uh oh...
Yes. The argument denies its own premise. It denies that there can be a uncaused thing, concludes that the universe must have a cause, and then posits an uncaused thing: god. The argument shoots itself in the foot before even getting out of the gate.
Worse, even if valid, his proof would simply not a necessary one, almost by definition. If the chain of causality must simply end somewhere, then why not the universe itself (since we have evidence of THAT existing already)? If Aquinas can posit a unknown step beyond, that has no steps before it, there's no reason why I can't simply posit that the sequence ends a step before it. And there's litterally no comeback Aquinas can make, because he's set things up so that this move is totally acceptable.
This graphic helps explain my point: Occam's Razor
And of course, the "and this we call God" bit is nonsense. The ONLY characteristic necessary of a first cause is that it once existed without being caused, and caused the universe. It 1) doen't have to still exist 2) doesn't have to have a will 3) doesn't have to have any connection at all with Aquinas' idea of God. So the even if his argument weren't already bunk, it isn't even marginally capable of proving that the first cause is God. -
Re:You would expect...
Worked pretty smoothly in Netscape 6.2 on my G3/450 with 384MB
However, when I loaded the Bible, it chewed up just about all of the available memory. The machine started choking a little and swapping to the hard disk, something I haven't heard it do in a *long* time.

Emersive AI VR
Aw, gee, I'm getting tired of telling a disputacious and dismissive SlashDot world about the grand happenings in subversive Artificial Intelligence. Maybe they'll believe it when they emerse -- no, wait a holominute, that word is incorrect -- immerse themselves in virtual reality (VR) amid a known or unknown population of artificially intelligent Virtual Entities.
Then all these genius SlashDotters will wake up and schmell the Kofi, when they virt-realize that Visual Basic Mind.VB and Java-based Mind.Java are for real and are bearing down on their supercilious posteriors with ineluctable, inescapable Technological Singularity.
Now, don't phreak out, but the next time your holodeck emerses you from ordinary reality into virtual reality, take a look around you at some of the co-resident weirdos that you may meet. Happy holodecking!

Gimp g1mp gimp g1mp (damn lameness filter)
I wonder how many times he had to explain just what the hell this is supposed to be.
Actually, I'm not sure what type of thing the Gimp is, myself. What is it and why does it grin so? And where's its body?
And what's with the blue seamless paper and light boxes used in those photographs? Geeks are supposed to use cheap digital cameras with glaring flashes, with a stack of Jolt cans in the background.
