Actully since they have $40 billion is cash reserves, they could lose $348 million for about the next 106 years. Taking into consideration the interest they earn off the $40 billion and the profit they make from their office and os products. If they want the console market, they can certainly wait it out. If they felt they could win the market in 50 years they could start giving away the Xbox with every purchase of MS Office or Coco Rice Krispies for that matter.
I recently converted my single boot Linux laptop to a dual boot Linux/Windows XP laptop, so that I can use Microsoft Office (writing law school papers is still easier in Word than it is in Open Office).
He has already accepted the EULA for XP and MS Office so he has surrendered all his rights to Microsoft, why is he concerned about a little spam? This sounds pretty damn silly to me. He finds it ok to give MS complete access to all the data on his laptop, to do with whatever they see fit, but it is an outrage that he might be sent some easily filtered spam.
Maybe before moderating a post the moderator should read the story first. The article states about Slashdot, and I quote "The popular discussion site for fans of open source software".
Slashdot is supported by Microsoft ad dollars and the user base is mostly Windows users. It is certainly not the place I go for trustworthy open source news.
This is just another MS Ad place by one of the fake Linux supporters. I sometimes wonder if I'm Slahdot or ZDnet, I almost can't tell the difference anymore.
Slashdot is the voice of the open source community like ZDnet is the mother of Linux.
As soon as anyone looks at any piece of MS code, they will have been outsmarted. Any code you write thereafter, MS can claim you stole from them. They simple show a non-technical judge how your code and theirs looks very similar. Look at all those lines that contain if, for, printf, return 0; and exit(0), see how they stole our ideas. All though this looks rather ridiculous, keep in mind that some lawyers were able to convince several judges that telling people how to play a legally obtained DVD on a Linux box was a despicable criminal act.
This does not only apply to free/open source software authors, this applies to anyone who rights code. If you look at MS code, you are risking ownership of anything you ever write afterwards. Maybe you will win the case, if you have the kind of money it takes to fight it. So, where do you want to be led to today?
It took them over 30 years to provide digital cable and enhance the consumers viewing pleasure and only a year or two to screw the consumer by blocking recording on digital devices. I believe I now know how this "innovation" stuff works.
There are over 550 programs for the Zaurus at the Zaurus Software Index. Also the Zaurus is more than just a PDA, it's a complete computer in a very small case.
Yes, you can mount smb and nfs shares with the Zaurus. You can ftp into it using Konqueror and then drag files from the KDE desktop to tha Zaurus and from the Zaurus to the desktop.
This code needs to be released. We could use it to read the grooves in Bill and MonkeyMan's heads and tell what they are thinking. Perhaps with the information gained, we can then stop their evil plot to take over the world.
Here are a couple of screenshots of what Slashdot looks like on a Zaurus. I was connected through ethernet, not wireless. The reason you see the whole Zaurus is because I connected to the Zaurus from my Mandrake box, using FB VNC Server.
COMPUTE! magazine wrote an article about splitting the screen back in 1983 and provided the code in Basic. I believe they used the expression "switching between the windows" in the article. I created it on my Timex/Sinclair with 16k of memory, although at the time I saw no real use for it.
I will be the first to admit I have a real bad memory, so I may be confusing two different articles. But I'm positive they used the term "windows". I'm also sure it was in 83, because by 84 I moved up to the Commodore.
Wine has been able to run Media Player 6.4 for some time now. I wrote a small script to launch it some time ago, called mplayer2, so as not to be confused with the Linux Mplayer.
#!/bin/sh cd "/mnt/windows/Program Files/Windows Media Player" wine --managed --debugmsg -all mplayer2.exe $1
Then set the mime type in Navigator/Mozilla/Galeon/Konqueror like this:
The above is for Navigator, but you get the idea. I of course made the script executable and as you can see moved it to the/bin directory.
It's not going to embed it in your browser and most of the commercial sites that offer trailers require the newest player. But it will work as well as the Codeweavers plugin if the need should arise, without the cost.
Disclaimer: I have purchased the Crossover plugin and am very happy with it.
I laughed myself to tears and almost wet my pants when I read this. I think it may be because I just watched "American Pie". "The flute is not magical" will be a phrase I will be using for some time to come. Thanks for a good laugh and phrase.
This is not a sign of capitulation, but more an act of revenge. Bill Gates is a saint compared to Steve Ballmer. I'm sure Mr. Ballmer is plotting the demise of all MS's enemies, real and perceived. This is not going to be a pretty picture either. Mr. Ballmer cares nothing about appearances, he will openly start pulling licenses and buying politicians until nothing hinders MS from it's objectives. I hope by the time I get home I can still log on to the internet using Linux.

I'm probably encouraging bad behavior, but I thought this was pretty darn funny.
And Samuel Adams was a two bit punk troublemaker who had no respect for the crown or estabished tradition.
For first statement "Yeah, but is it Open Fucking Source(tm)?", tells us where you stand. If there will be no monetary gain from the project, then it is not worth doing.
"The natural liberty of man is to be free from any superior power on earth, and not to be under the will or legislative authority of man, but only to have the law of nature for his rule." -- Samuel Adams
I believe you hit the nail on the head. Sega already has over 250,000 preorders for Dreamcast and expects to make $80,000,000 in sales their first day. Considering that and MS's dealings with their previous partners, such as Apple and IBM. I would say we can expect to see a game console from MS that looks very similar to Sega's Dreamcast.
My only question would be, did they pirate the technology or was Sega dumb enough to license it to them?
-- Microsoft is not in the business of building better mouse traps, they're in the business of killing cats.
I don't really know what Microsoft's intentions are by publishing the protocols are, I could take a good guess though. But they have made it quite clear what there intentions are regarding the internet and access thereto and they are not in the interest of anyone not using Windows. So I'm afraid I cannot applaud or support anything they do in this area.
You know the wolf is a very beautiful creature, I'm sure it's a doting parent, helps maintain a certain balance to it's environment and works very well in groups. I would suggest though that it would be unwise of you to use one to look over your sheep or protect your family. It would most likely eat the sheep and carry off your children. I'm not saying this make the wolf evil, it's just his nature and is to be expected.
If you intend on writing software that supports the MS Messenger, be careful. Because when the wolf gets hungry he's going to eat.

Maybe they can adopt Palladium next. They should also copyright and patent KDE while they're at it.

I don't know what this is about, Qtopia Desktop for Linux has been out for quite some time now.

I gave Mandrake $60 and I'm not angry.

"Most improved project? Gnome? Improved from crashing every second to crashing every other minute, I suppose."
I use Gnome and I can't remember the last time it crashed. I must not be running any of the good stuff. What am I missing?
