Re:Intelligent design
Fundies say the darnedest things, eh? If you probe the text of any work of fiction enough, you're going to find some goofy shit. Every other work of fiction has "certain numerical characteristics" not found in any other work of man, and the Bible is no exception. But even if it was anything more than just a bunch of bullshit, it still wouldn't prove the existence of any type of deity.

Re:Well-rounded?
I believe evolution to be true, and I don't mind that others don't. In my HS AP biology class, the teacher separated all of the students into two groups
Perhaps you're unclear on the definition of the word "literal". Don't be ashamed, much of the US has lost understanding of the word due to regular and unabashed misuse.
literal - adjective - taking words in their usual or most basic sense without metaphor or allegory : dreadful in its literal sense, full of dread.
Before you go off on my explanations of these terms, go check out this site where you can see quotes from religious fundamentalists claiming all of the above (the world is flat, the sun moves around the earth, the world used to be covered by a magic dome of water) and justifying their beliefs because the bible says so and they believe it is literally true (some just think the English translation of the King James version is true) and the inerrant word of their god.

Re:Artists, haha
If it was painted in a different time, in a different context, what bearing does it have today? It is historical, and shouldn't really offend anyone today, unless the case is being made that society still holds this view. Right?
Correct. My argument is that some of our society still does hold this view. I'd say most of our society is still racist to some degree. Have you ever seen this site? It's a collection of really racist comments from internet discussion sites. Here's a quote from Yahoo answers from just the other day, "If Obama gets elected, do you think that investing in KFC and chicken stocks will be a good investment? -Rich, YahooAnswers". Go ahead an look through the site a bit. It will turn your stomach.
Friend, fast food is EXPENSIVE. Far more so than most below the poverty line can afford to enjoy on a regular basis.
Fast food is expensive compared to home cooking, but people below the poverty line do eat it and eat it regularly. This is for several reasons including poor financial decision making and the fact that in many cases the parent or parents are at work all day and it is a fast way to feed the kids.In some states McDonald's takes food stamp cards.
I feel that a huge step forward would be to stop indulging people that seek to perpetuate the negativity. By defending the argument that fried chicken carries negative connotations, you're reaffirming that it should.
I disagree. I very strongly assert that acknowledging reality in no way reaffirms it as a good thing.
If we're moving forward - really, truly making progress, then people of all origins should eat fried chicken with pride. I like fried chicken, and I'm not ashamed to admit it. Why should anyone else be?
I don't think people should be ashamed to eat fried chicken. I do, however, understand their hesitation to do so given the very real negative stereotypes.
For example, when the person I was with mad the comment about "he's probably looking for some fried chicken" as a random comment about a black person, should I have ignored the racist implications? One of the most effective ways to counter racism is with negative feedback. There used to be a civil rights campaign called "glower power." Basically, if someone makes a racist comment you don't acknowledge it directly (making them defensive) but simply frown at them and say nothing. It works fairly well because it does not ostracize but does effectively discourage such behavior. By recognizing the racist implications of the comment I heard, I can use this same technique. The racists I know generally stop using such comments around me and I like to think this has helped a little bit. If, on the other hand I pretend I don't understand the racist implications, they seem me as ignorant and they have no negative feedback about the behavior, but a lesser opinion of me making my non-racist comments and actions less likely to be emulated by them.

Re:Oh noes!
Both of the quotes appear on the Fundies Say The Darndest Things top 100 collection.
Some of my favorites:
No, everyone is born Christian. Only later in life do people choose to stray from Jesus and worship satan instead. Atheists have the greatest "cover" of all, they insist they believe in no god yet most polls done and the latest research indicates that they are actually a different sect of Muslims.-
I am a bit troubled. I believe my son has a girlfriend, because she left a dirty magazine with men in it under his bed. My son is only 16 and I really don't think he's ready to date yet. What's worse is that he's sneaking some girl to his room behind my back. I need help, God! I want my son to stop being so secretive!

[Am I in discussion with a human who has a functioning brain?]
What does a functioning brain have to do with the Bible?-
If the Bible is wrong when it tells us it is infallible, then it contradicts itself. If it contradicts itself, then it is unreliable. If it is unreliable, then our faith is totally shattered and Christianity is a lie. You need to seriously reconsider your logic.

One of the most basic laws in the universe is the Second Law of Thermodynamics. This states that as time goes by, entropy in an environment will increase. Evolution argues differently against a law that is accepted EVERYWHERE BY EVERYONE. Evolution says that we started out simple, and over time became more complex. That just isn't possible: UNLESS there is a giant outside source of energy supplying the Earth with huge amounts of energy. If there were such a source, scientists would certainly know about it.

A warning to the feint of heart and/or those who are depressed and/or have a low tolerance for stupidity: the following links/quotes are not for you. Stop reading here.
Those are excerpts from the Fundies Say The Darndest Things! Top 100 Quotes.
FSTDT! will usually make you angry, sad, or depressed. Occasionally there's a laugh in there, but it's generally so damned depressing that these people barely even know their own religion that you're going to be popping Xanax like Pez Candy.
I once made the mistake of reading through a year and a half of their archives in one sitting.. I have never wanted to drink myself into oblivion more than that one day.
The ones up there are pretty funny - silly, almost - but there's a lot that just make you depressed or angry, such as:
If u have sex before marriage then in Gods eyes u are married to that person if a man rapes a woman in Gods eyes they are married it sucks for the girl but what can we do lol
To say the Bible was written by men and may contain inaccuracies completely contradicts the word of the Bible.
Atheists See No Problem With Human To Animal Sex
Best ones? Hypocrasy.
I am 100% pro-life, unless we're talking about capital punishment, in which case I am 100% pro-death.

Re:Science != Teleology
That said I think evolution is a much more beautiful thing than God just snapping His fingers and saying "BAM!"
God didn't say "BAM!",
God said "Let there be light".
And he said it in English.
He just gave it to the original scribes in Hebrew so that it would later be translated into the correct English.
If your original Hebrew disagrees with my original King James --- your original Hebrew is wrong. If your original Hebrew agrees with my original King James, your original Hebrew is right.
(Currently the #15 quote on the FSTDT Top 100 Quotes list.)

Re:I ran into this with my roommate yesterdayIf that is relevant, how come we can't speak Englisc [google.co.uk]? The answer to that question is answered on the site I linked ya to. The word of God has been in heaven forever. The KJV has always been there. The so called Hebrew words like Alleluia are English words. The English did not borrow them from the Hebrew but rather the Hebrew borrowed them from the English. If the KJV has always been there and is the original word of God then there is no other conclusion. The same can be said for any so called Greek words that were borrowed from the Greek or transliterated. It is a matter of what bias you approach this particular subject.

1.If we did evolve from monkeys then how come babies arent born monkeys

Re:Read the bible lately?
Didn't you know? God's language is English.
God deliberately had the original Hebrew Arabic and Greek scribes write the wrong stuff so that when the King James translators botched the job of translating, then the KJV Bible would be the one true perfect Word Of God.
If your original Hebrew disagrees with my original King James --- your original Hebrew is wrong. If your original Hebrew agrees with my original King James, your original Hebrew is right.

Re:FIST SPORTI feel that I should post to this post from Fundies say the Darndest Things in this debate. It's amazing how people can parrot the same things over and over, without ever realising what it is they're saying: One of the most basic laws in the universe is the Second Law of Thermodynamics. This states that as time goes by, entropy in an environment will increase. Evolution argues differently against a law that is accepted EVERYWHERE BY EVERYONE. Evolution says that we started out simple, and over time became more complex. There's simply no way that's a real post. Someone that stupid would clearly forget to breathe. Personally, I try my very best to be reasonable and polite to religious folks, on the principle that their right to wave their beliefs is fine, but ends at my brain. But that post....that abomination against the human brain...well, if real it's truly terrifying.
Unfortunately, isn't there an internet law floating around stating that it's impossible to tell the difference between a real fundamentalist and a parody in an online posting? -

Re:Not officially recognized as a religion
I do like your religion, though.
Ooooooo..... Don't encourage me. Seriously.
I'm already too damn tempted to pull a Hubbard.
In fact I woke up this morning from dreaming playing the preacher game and the wacky-but-Biblically-valid preaching I could use. For example the earlier Fundie nutjob post on here defining anything other than The King James Version of the Bible was a cult... a surprisingly common school of Fundyism that also produced the following Gem on translation and original source Biblical Scripture:
If your original Hebrew disagrees with my original King James --- your original Hebrew is wrong. If your original Hebrew agrees with my original King James, your original Hebrew is right.
Dreaming a whole routine on how that isn't following the KJV Bible and isn't learning and following the Word Of God... and specifically failing to learn from the story of Babble... presuming oneself EXEMPT from God's judgment at Babble. Jesus's Arabic was no more the Language Of God than Shakespeare's English was the Language Of God. And on and on. Even as an atheist, the temptation of slipping into the role and playing at their own game.
I feel dirty. And afraid. Very very afraid. Such an easy and dangerous and evil game they play. Far too easy for any smart psychopath to take up the game and go on TV and pretty much close the show with "send me your money.... oh and by the way God hates fags! Kill a fag for Jesus!".

Re:I'm doomed.
Most fundies still think AIDS is punishment from God for being gay (ignoring statistics that it's not just a homosexual problem anymore) or failing that some random unspecified sin. There's a terrifying post in the Fundies Say the Darndest Things! top 100 (iirc) that claims that diseases at birth are a consequence of sins committed IN THE WOMB. Exactly how you could commit any significant sin whilst in there and at such an early stage of development was left as an exercise for the reader.
You cannot reason with these people, you cannot placate them by giving in "just a bit". They are authoritarian ideologue retards who want nothing less than to destroy science and reason completely. They hate anyone who doesn't agree with them and are completely impervious to all rational arguments. The only way to deal with them is mockery, disdain and ignoring them insofar as possible. Don't even try to debate them, you will not change their minds, they have long since decided what the "facts" are and view anything contrary as satanic lies. (Many fundie forums actually ban any such debate.) -
Re:Heavy
Sigh. If only fusion would occur naturally. That would be just dreamy!
That reminds me of the 2005 Fundies Say The Darndest Things Post of the Year Award Winner:
"One of the most basic laws in the universe is the Second Law of Thermodynamics. This states that as time goes by, entropy in an environment will increase. Evolution argues differently against a law that is accepted EVERYWHERE BY EVERYONE. Evolution says that we started out simple, and over time became more complex. If only fusion would occur naturally, I imagine it would supply quite a bit of energy. Maybe even supply enough energy to get that silly evolution theory to work. Alas, if there were such a source, scientists would certainly know about it by now.
