Re:Cost-cutting
I would have been extra impressed if it was automated and took the setting from something like this site online:
http://www.geekandproud.net/terror/
Or, for the less ernified among us: http://www.terror-alert.com/
I bet with a little work I can make one that merges into my current desktop wallpaper... Some imagemagic, curl and grep in a script should do nicely...
-
Or, if you want a virtual version...
You could just stick to the good old Muppet threat level by embedding http://www.geekandproud.net/terror/terror.jpg into your site.
-
Geeks already solved this, long ago
And - it's right here:

Re:Keep safe

It has been Ernie/Bert for about a year....

Re:Why Would You Expect Otherwise?
The United States government's national threat level is Elevated, or Yellow.
The U.S. threat level is High, or Orange, for all domestic and international flights.
I think you meant to say that the threat level is Bert for everything else but Ernie for all flights.
This is government work so it is very important to use the correct terminology.

Re:Because we all know...
...breaking down threats and dangers in to colors like magenta, cyan, mauve, ash, and indigo, rather than actually telling us what the threat is, is a great way to communicate to the populace the danger they should think they are in, and thus keep control over the small minded populace. Agreed, they should definitely adopt this more informative scheme http://www.geekandproud.net/terror/. -
Re:Safe
A better alert system is this one. We never want it to get to Elmo because that is bad news.
The war on cyber terrorism doesn't seem to be of any concern to the current administration. -
Terror Level: Elmo, Ernie and BertFrom http://www.geekandproud.net:
Elmo (Red): Flights from the UK
In other words, we are now at Terror Alert Level Rush's Moving Pictures!
Ernie (Orange): All commercial flights
Bert (Yellow): Everything else -
What about the threat level?
I didn't see a Homeland terror level mentioned anywhere. The current terror level is BERT: Sessame Street Terror Level
-
A much better color alert system...
...is available here
-
Re:Another color-code system?
Perhaps I could recommend yet another terror alert system that seems to work pretty well.
-
Re:As one of those /. liberals....
For that matter, when's the last time you remember the threat level dropping to Guarded? And what's with the colors, anyways?
Guarded? I've never heard of that one. There's a reason for the colors, and that's because the official terror alert levels are:
Green - Oscar
Blue - Cookie Monster
Yellow - Bert
Orange - Ernie
Red - Elmo
okay, yeah -
Re:Terminology
They must be using RIAA Math.

Re:Our gov't at work
Nearly every aspect of this homeland "security" as implemented appears to have come from some underperforming kindergarten class.
Amen. -
Re:And in related news
the terror level has just been raised to "Orange" high at the same time that Tom Ridge announced that after the election he will reteire due to financial difficulties. I guess $175,000 a year of tax payer money just doesn't buy a lot now a days.
That's only for DC. The terror level is still "Bert" for the rest of the country.Regarding his pay, Ridge has got to have one of the most stressful, time consuming, and important jobs in the country, and as such I for one do not think that $175K is nearly enough. Corporate officers frequently make more than that, so why would anybody willingly subject himself to a much more stressful and dangerous job for less money? I've got to side with Ridge.

Re:Your Rights Online? What a joke.
You're right. 1984 has nothing to do with increased government surveillance. Nor does it have anything to do with keeping the people in a state of terror allows the government to steal our liberties. Nor does 1984 have anything to do with the government rewriting history. Finally, 1984 has nothing to do with the world being in a constant state of war to assist in keeping the population in fear.
