Re:and still
3-5 day cruises and people do pay for them.
Not that I'd do anything that silly, of course, but... got any more information on those?
:)There are these ones: http://www.geekcruises.com/
And I don't know if there were ever LAN parties held, but with enough geeks there might be a shot at it. Geek Cruises to be halfway decent, but seems to have gone downhill quite a lot. For example, their homepage has... a quilting cruise?!?

Re:I find Linux porters in the following places
Do you mean like this? http://geekcruises.com/ I bet someone on the Linux Lunacy cruise would want to help out

Shouldn't This Be Just-Offshoring?
Furthermore, doesn't this venture sound like a geek-cruise
http://www.geekcruises.com/ gone bad?
This would make an interesting reality TV show where once a week
a coder is voted off and has to walk a gang-plank to sleep with the phishes.
"You ARE weakest geek...Goodbye."
Think Gillivan's Island meets The Aprentice meets MTV's The Real World
and call it: The Virtual World -

Geek Cruises looks promising...

Cruisers or Lusers?
Whatever happened to the Geek Cruises? Or is that just for posers?

Void marketing scheme?
I smell a marketing scheme. According to yapc.ca, the only scheduled training sessions are from employees of ExitCertified, an IT training company. Conveniently, ExitCertified is also in Ottawa. Further, why would I fly to a conference where they're still looking for speakers *two months* out? All they have are "Dick Hardt, founder of ActiveState" and two ExitCertified guys. If you want a truly amazing training/networking/fun experience, try a GeekCruise. I went on Linux Lunacy II in the Caribbean and hung out with Linus, Guido van Roosum (sp; invented Python), and Eric S. Raymond.

You are going on a geek cruise aren't you?

Geek Cruise.. What??
I know that here on Slashdot we all like to pile on the flaming when it comes to the Church of Scientology, but doesn't anyone care about the "Church" and its actions when they sponsor something like the Geek Cruise? Is this another case where Slashdotters are willing to look the other way because they are basically being bribed off? How many times do we see this with the RIAA/MPAA-love/hate relationship on this message board?
Here's the scoop. Geek Cruises Inc. is operated by Neil Bauman who is a OT6-level Scientologist. Not to mention that he has deep contacts with anti-semite Bobby Fischer.
The geek cruise format, from the time of leaving port is identical to that of the Freewinds OT5 training. The early seminars and late "social activities" are designed to loosen your mind from its pinnings, allowing external suggestion to become much easier.
This isn't done to "brainwash you into loving Linux", that's already done and there's no need to be redundant. However, the point of the cruise is to open your mind to the possibility of joining their other cruises like Mindscape: Clear your mind in Alaska and Celebrity Slam (this year featuring Nicholas Cage). These other cruises are specifically geared towards getting people hooked into Scientology. For whatever reason, it works a hell of a lot better than the weirdo movie they like to show to "IQ test takers" at their normal temples.
It's because the company Geek Cruises Inc does so many nice things for the geek community and provides really interesting cruises that Scientology likes it as a means of recruiting so much. Don't be fooled, please. If you are interested in Scientology, please visit their website and read up about it. Then visit Operation Clamback and read up about the things they don't want you to know.
Scientology is one of the most devious "religions" around. Don't be sucked in by promises of meeting geek celebrities or viewing beautiful scenery and stopping at exotic ports of call. It is all a scam. You may get what you pay for, but you will get much more that you simply don't want. -

Interesting cruise by the way
For those who want more info, here's the link. Geek Cruises organize these caribbean cruises with seminars about geeky themes and recognized speakers. Interestingly enough, Linus doesn't appear in the speaker list (which includes Guido Van Rossum and Eric Raymond, among others), so I guess he is there as an attendee.
The seminars themselves look very attractive, and the fact that they're held on board a caribbean cruise doesn't hurt. If I had about 3000 dollars and a very understanding spouse, I'd like to give these a try.

Re:The floating Linus?
Linus is here for the next week, until the feature freeze.

New slashdot section : Social!
We are already a bit of a society, although quite dysfunctional (hello goatse.cx-posting AC). Isn't it about time we had a section with announcements about major conventions and events like Linux Bierwanderung and Geek Cruises?
Granted, it could be percieved to be a bit like free promotion, but isn't Slashdot all about serving the Nerd community with what we need?
At least, someone could make a page, and have a slashbox created. -
Re:Small budget security trainingWhere I work they gave me a $7,500 security training budget for myself. I was faced with just the opposite problem -- where to go for decent training, and not just a "hang out" conference.
Hey, go on a geek cruise!. For $2000 you get a cabin for 2 and 7 days training!
I thought this was an incredible boondoggle until I looked at how much you would pay for a hotel for a 5 day course.

On board, what Net connections will be available?
Holland America has equipped its ships for Internet connectivity. Called the "Internet Cafe," this room (which is open 24 hours a day) has six to 12 PCs with realtime browser access to the Internet.
Will my PC work aboard ship?
Each stateroom is equipped with 110-volt, 60-cycle alternating current. So most hair dryers, electric shavers, portable computers, and other small appliances not exceeding 500 watts (110 volts) may be used in the stateroom outlets. Having said that, many staterooms have only one outlet, so we suggest you bring a power strip!
My significant other is doubtful about cruising with a ship full of geeks, but I want him/her to come along with me.
The ship holds about 1,400 people and only about 300 of that number will be Geek Cruisers, including their non-geek spouses, friends, and family members. So, actually, it's the geeks who will be in the minority. Your spouse will have plenty of company.
There's a lot more at their website, but that should sum it up really well. -
Re:Where do you want to go?> He's going to spend hundreds of dollars on plane tickets and hotel rooms. Then sit there for 2 weeks eating pizza, working, and looking out the window at all the people having fun on their holidays.
Has anyone tried Geek Cruises?
Doesn't look like you have network access from your stateroom, but if you're looking for a geeky holiday, as opposed to getting work done while on holiday...

And you can ask Bruce personally this October! You can ask Bruce all about patents (or whatever else) if you head out on the Linux Lunacy cruise from Geek Cruises.
Bruce is going to be giving the following seminars:
- How To Be A Debian Developer
- An Introduction to Ham Radio for Computer Geeks
- What a Long, Strange Trip It's Been: Hacker to Venture Capitalist, and Everything in Between
- Social Engineering: Hacking Politics and the Economy with Free Software and Changing People's Lives
I'm sure amidst all those talks, you could find him meandering about on the ship and corner him for some one-on-one.
No, I don't work for geekcruises.com, I'm just excited to go...

Linux Lunacy 2001 (Caribbean, October 21, 2001)Leave it to mrs.dutch to find a way to get me on a slow boat to nowhere; pun. Geekcruises has posted a linux cruise with an impressive list of speakers, you included. Do you think this marketing method will help Linux move onto more desktops?
The remark from mrs.dutch, "Here, now you can go on a cruise and play your game while I get some sun.", says much since she skipped past all other topics and pinned Linux to the wall. Cool idea by the way.
Is it too far out in time for you to say what your topic will be?

Re:Observations after reading the morning paper
Before I have my say I like to answer your questions.
1. Most web sites are incredibly juvenile in comparison.
some websites are juvenile, including this one at times, but some websites have incredible insight and are aimed at a more mature audiance.
2. There seems to be a glaring lack of knowledge and experience on many review-oriented web sites.
Again some reviewers are very, very poor online, but the same can be said of offline reviewers. There are weak links in everychain.
point 3, I agree, but if you are offended by such hype why are you a /.er? By being part of this community and posting intelligentlly on these topics, we (majority of /.ers) are continuing this tradition.
And now on to my point, I was reading the paper today (the guardian in the uk, online suppliment) and I saw an article on www.geekcruises.com I had a need to tell a few freinds about it, because it is relevent to a descussion we are having on a mailling list, a the article was online word for word. Why did I pay for the news if the news is availible for free at my desk? I didn't read the paper until after I was logged in anyway.
Maybe papers are a dieing breed, but Somehow I don't think hundreds of years are gonna die, they will just change the model of delivery.
