An Investor in the "Morality Industry" speaks outJon Katz wrote, "... as if any exposure to graphic language and scatological humor will damage the fragile young."
His attitude is a typical media-elite mocking dismissal of the numbing-down of what's socially acceptable. GnrcMan's comments about the Childhood Action Project's review also smack of politically correct "what's the big deal?" posturing. And replies to GnrcMan's comments reinforce the "what a funny, harmless movie" lock-step opinion. But words and images have consequences. A tragic example of that is the story on the Reuters wire yesterday about a 7-year-old boy killing his 3-year-old brother by copying a move he saw in televised pro wrestling.
I have no desire to see the movie. I can't even sit through the TV show. I never made it through an episode of Beavis & Butthead, either. Heh, heh, heh. Click. I seem to be one of the rare Slashdotters who sympathizes with Childhood Action Project (CAP), though, ( I'm a Christian raising two sons with my stay-at-home wife) so into the fray I go...
CAP is trying to quantify their analysis of the film. They offer their reviews as a tool for parents like me so I can decide which movies we'd like to take our family to see. (I'm not alone, BTW. Financial analysis shows that R-rated movies make less money than G, PG, or PG-13. Nowadays, Hollywood has to make R- and NC-17-rated movies to puff themselves up and say they've created "art." Of course, occasionally those ratings merely serve to attempt to make up for bad writing with less-than-mass-appeal shock value, too.) CAP makes subjective measures of Wanton Violence/Crime, Impudence/Hate, Sex/Homosexuality, Drugs/Alcohol, Offense to God, and Murder/Suicide. Sure, such metrics look like foolishness to the so-called "modern" worldview. In Katz' world, Wanton Violence/Crime and Murder/Suicide are harmless unless they happen in RL; Impudence/Hate is lauded as long as it's targeted at people of faith or anyone with conventional authority; Sex/Homosexuality and Drugs/Alcohol -- the more the better; and Offense to God -- well, he's dead, so he's an easy target.
Am I a repressed fanatic because I do my best to keep my kids innocent and to teach them what I know to be the truth? Hardly. It's my job as a parent to raise them with the values that I believe will serve them best. Do I teach my kids the value of free speech? Certainly, but freedom comes with responsibility.
Those values, BTW, do include tolerance. Intolerant Christians need to be confronted with Jesus' own central teachings -- he freely associated with the outcasts of society while he sharply condemned religious self-righteousness and hypocrisy. But Jesus taught tolerance in the context of having a personal, obedient relationship with God, denying our self-centered nature, and loving -- that's agape (look up the meaning of the Greek) -- one another. Such ideals can hardly be understood by a culture that doesn't even believe in God, celebrates selfishness and self-absorption, and lusts after one another without ever knowing what the word agape means.
My kids will have plenty of opportunities as teenagers to rebel against my values and choose for themselves. But it's still my job as a parent to show them where I stand on moral issues and to teach them responsibility.
Katz declares that, instead of being a comedy, South Park is actually a sharp, political film that exposes the self-righteousness and hypocrisy of the so-called "Morality Industry." It's a sad, sad thing that people fall short of perfection. The only perfect man got nailed to a cross for his trouble. But careless critics confuse the Perfect Message with imperfect followers. Let anyone hold up a standard for (conventional) morality, and today he or she is denounced as an intolerant, self-righteous hypocrite.
As I once heard Ravi Zacharias say, "Before you tear down fences, be careful that you know why they were put up in the first place." Ethics and morals -- whether they are based on examples set by Jesus Christ, Mohammed, Buddha, old, dead Greek philosophers, or Bill Clinton -- exist to draw boundaries for social behavior. South Park, it seems, wants to show what it's like without bondaries. And
... Parker and Stone want to show me this because ...?The Apostle Paul sums it up: "whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable--if anything is excellent or praiseworthy--think about such things." ( Philipians 4:8)

I doubt he has put much thought into what political theories he believes in, but by his mentality he seems to share anarchist type visions. But thanks to western media (mainly the US since he lives in the US) and US government, they have successfully made anarchism synonymous with chaos, terror, and violence which is not at all how anarchism is.
For those who wish to step out of the box, and fed stupidity of the media, I suggest at least reading the Anarchy FAQ here.
For those who believe Anarchism is a utopian society that will never work with more than 100 people, I suggest reading about the Spanish Anarchism Revolution here (brief) or here (long). I don't believe in state socialism at all because it gives too much power to those in power, no matter how democratic the system is made to be, it is still separated from the common workers, which doesn't fit the real definition of socialism. Those in power end up controlling what the workers produce, not the workers themselves. I certainly believe many people today who think they believe in state socialism would change their mind and support (social) anarchism if they were aware of how it actually works, rather than what they have been "coerced" (brainwashed) into believing.
If the US was so interested in protecting and spreading democracy why do they oppose leftist democratic movements and organizations in other countries and the US? Why would they oppose Anarchism and anarchist movements if it has proven to work and is the ultimate in personal freedom in democracy? Why have many (about all?) of the countries they have bombed and attacked since World War II not been replaced with democratic governments, but usually fascist/right wing ones? Is it possible they are actually fighting for the "good" of capitalism...corporations get cheap labor in "third world" countries with fascist governments...taking the natural resources from the citizens of a nation and using it for their own profits. Too hard to believe? Too lazy to read up for yourself? Rather accept the US government is a gift from heaven and all of those who oppose it are dumb, insane, or evil? -

Some Neural Network Sources
- University of Toronto Neural Network Group has some software which fits the Open Source model.
- University of Stuttgart has a neural network simulator. Source is available, its GPL.
- Pacific Northwest National Laboratory has a slew of links to free/share ware. No idea if any of it is Open Source.
- Karsten Kutza maintains Neural Networks at Your Fingertips.
I got all of these off of Google. Try entering 'neural network' as a search term and seeing what hits you get.

I decided a long time ago that I didn't like the way the windows GUI behaved, and I changed it. It's fast coming to the point where you don't have to be imprisoned by the taskbar to get work done. This is a prime example.

Off-topic rant: Deceptive banner ads
This is so almost completely off-topic it's not funny, but I saw it as I was waiting for this page to load...
Can I say that I hate deceptive-looking banner ads? It's a gray, dialog-box looking thing and the only words are "Are you on the list?", something that looks like a text-entry box, and a "sign up" button. I grabbed the image, and put it here if you want to see what I'm looking at.
What is this an ad for? Do I want to be on the list in the first place? Considering that some companies are coming under fire for improper uses of email address and other such personal information, why would anyone want to "join the list" without even a clue?
Yes, I know I can just click on the banner to find out, but the beauty of hypertext links is that I have an idea of what I am linking to in the first place!
It's ads like these that are causing clickthrough rates to fall through the floor (not to mention some companies coming up with banner-blocking software). One of Jakob Neilsen's recent Alertbox columns talks about "the top ten new mistakes of web design" and number 10 is "Anything that looks like advertising". People are becoming to desensitized to and even developing aversions to banner ads, pop-up consoles and the like.
Verging back to the topic, I suppose since we're talking about a 3D information space on the heldheld, we can expect this bad advertising trend to evolve into ads literally flying at us on the screen in the future...

Atomic weight 500There's a book by the German science fiction author Hans Dominik. I couldn't find his books on amazon.com, but I read a couple of his books in German. He writes in the style of Robert Heinlein.
Amazing! Born in 1872, he had an amazing vision of what might be possible in the future. In his book "Atomgewicht 500", written in 1935, he describes how scientists find that stuff. Scientifically very acurate for that time, and he also describes the plateau effect. Recommended reading for all German

When you first get one of these, expect to first couple of batteries to drain quickly. I believe it charges an on-board battery that's basically used to keep the info on the Blackberry intact when the AA dies.
This is not quite true. Mobitex base stations have huge coverage - tens of miles in radius, and TX power is 2-6 Watts. Portable Mobitex modems have output power about 2 W and draw huge pulses of current. That's why a secondary battery is needed - it gets trickle-charged from AAs.
BTW, I have BlackBerry around but Fido GSM works better for me. In fact, Fido already has Email over SMS. If you need only message digests check out my mail-SMS at my home page at GeoCities.

As it happens, the suffering of the different and intelligent is nothing new. I'm a third-generation Hellmouth survivor: My grandfather suffered literal physical abuse at the hands of the nuns at his Catholic school because he's left handed. My mother, the smartest kid by far in her class, was denied the chance to be an exchange student because "she's just a steelworker's daughter." I've discussed my own experiences previously -- suffice it to say that I'm well aware of the cruelty of peers and teachers, having lived through it.
If you like, you can go read Oh No, Not Again!, which was my original reaction to Littleton, and Confessions of a Redhead, my follow-up after seeing Star Wars. The second one might not make much sense unless you're familiar with the Chronicles of Amber, though.
Maybe it's time to write another essay, and send it someplace where it'll do some good. Like the Village Voice, which I would have expected to have had better sense.

I'm a third-generation Hellmouth survivor: My grandfather suffered literal physical abuse at the hands of the nuns at his Catholic school because he's left handed. My mother, the smartest kid by far in her class, was denied the chance to be an exchange student because "she's just a steelworker's daughter." I've discussed my own experiences previously -- suffice it to say that I'm well aware of the cruelty of peers and teachers, having lived through it.
If you like, you can go read Oh No, Not Again!, which was my original reaction to Littleton, and Confessions of a Redhead, my follow-up after seeing Star Wars. The second one might not make much sense unless you're familiar with the Chronicles of Amber, though.
Maybe it's time to write another essay, and send it someplace where it'll do some good. Like the Village Voice, which I would have expected to have had better sense.

Amiga Linux[1] has existed for many years. It was the first port of Linux to non-x86 hardware, and was done by Amiga people who wanted a better[2] OS.
You talk about the essence of the Amiga coming from it's wonderful multimedia hardware and the people around it, and I agree. My first two computers were Amigas and I loved them. However, time has moved on. After Commodore's bankruptcy the Amiga community has been scattered to the winds, leaving only a tiny hard core, and the hardware and OS that made the Amiga amazing in 1989 are now obsolete.
I don't see any reason why we old Amigans should get excited about this, or even any reason to call the new machine an Amiga: it will be entirely different hardware running an entirely different OS. It will presumably have an Amiga-like GUI but such things are already available[3]. If it runs old Amiga binaries it will in effect be running an Amiga emulator but such things are already available [4]
The Amiga was a wonderful machine in its day but I'm afraid it's time to let it die...

Originally a Mac lover and just plain anti-PC, it wasn't until I really found out what a horrible company intel was. Plus, when I went shoppin this last summer to build my own machine, I was impressed with how small, fast, and inexpensive the K6-2s are/were. I've always figured that having a big ass chip that heats up a house is poor design: I could put a jet engine on a pinto and speed by a porsche, but i'de still have a piece of shit car. -

this was just lousy writing on lucas' part. if the jedi were indeed an ancient culture as described by the older obi wan kenobi in episode iv then the metachloriants would have been long ignored and discredited. obi wan should have sensed the force in the boy as soon as he hit tattoine. especially the force at the level described. my official review is here for your perusing.

I disagree. The Star Wars page is much more cartoonial with the edited images. The Star Trek page seems much more sinister, and a much more convincing parody. It actually resembles some of the web pages I have seen around the 'Net. But the Andy Gibb-esque depiction of Jesus on The Force=Satan had me laughing more than anything else on either page.

Just take a look at the web pages designed by the "WYSIWYG editors are a crock for the ignorant!" crowd. Just for kicks, I took at the web pages of the people holding that attitude in this thread, and the most striking thing about all of them is how absolutely ugly and/or simplistic (read: uninteresting) they are -- usually just a bunch of links in a list, with a smattering of images. Wheeee! It's as if they're existing in a time warp from way back in the first year of the web, so I can understand them thinking that a text editor is the be-all-end-all in HTML design. One thing that is clear is that if any of these people's jobs depended on making quality web pages, they'd be out on the street begging for spare change. Hey, don't believe me? Just follow the links for yourself and see. The people coming out against WYSIWYG editors, who also had links to their own web pages:

In other words, for those of you complaining that WYSIWYG HTML editors are for unsophisticated dummies, I can only look at your own web pages and wonder just what your idea of sophistication is. If I had seen even one of you using some interesting HTML techniques, you might have a better chance of persuading me. Fact is, anybody can make ugly web pages, whether they're using vi or DreamWeaver, but most (not all) of the better-looking and interesting sites that I see out there are using tools other than just text editors. Most importantly, if you're going to come out and bash people for using WYSIWYG editors, you might wanna check your own sites first.
Me? FrontPage 2000 and DreamWeaver 2, using UltraEdit and vi for quick-and-dirty changes.

Damn, I was getting set for a good set of anti-Star Wars rants, but despite a couple of interesting points, as I read through it seemed like he was getting more crazy and irrational. I thought, is this just flamebait? But no then you find he's a religious fanatic too. He's not just pretending he's a nut, he really is a nut.
The site he links to is really funny, though... it's worth looking at (even though it is on *goddamn* *geocities* *with* *their* *goddamn* *fuckedup* *pop-up* *ads*):
The Force=SatanMy take on Star Wars: the first movie was obviously a breakthrough, the second movie was saved only by the Leigh Bracket script, the third was very uneven, and not really worth much... the "special effects as star" concept was already getting really tired. And speaking of racism in Star Wars: I was really pissed that the one strong black character that was introduced in the second movie was literally turned into a spear carrier in the third.
I will probably go see the new movie, but I don't expect much from it. Certainly not after seeing those shots in the last issue of Wired... it looks like we're in for some really dorky, ugly aliens this time around, even worse than Jim Henson's crap.
And as for any religious implications of the Force... in the real world, you may notice that power falls into the hands of both the good and the bad, and guns work no matter who pulls the trigger. If that doesn't contravene the existence of god, than neither does positing a black and white magic. If you really want to look for something to be upset about, I might suggest "Raiders of the Lost Ark", in which Jehova is turned into a special effect.

KDE Programs in GNOME menu?The very latest version of gnome-core (1.05) has a configuration option for this, but I've not built it yet (today?) so I don't know how it works, or how the RedHat RPMs have been built to handle it.
I can help though. Have a look at this page I put together a few months back. You'll find the means to add Gnome panel menus that ape the KDE and the CDE menu systems, as menu buttons on the Gnome Panel.

In the June 1999 Popular Electronics magazine they have an article which shows how to build a Tele-computer Controller and it allows you to have ring detection and dtmf detection for only a $57 kit probably around $20 in parts. Copyright does not need to be abolished, since in practice it already has. When someone can set up a business on the Internet, based in some foreign country without copyright protections, and sell content that is copied from others, then what good is copyright?
The big question is that now that we've lost copyright protection in many ways, how can business continue to work? Although this is a brazen plug, I've written an article on just this topic, and it's quite thorough in its investigation.
