Re:OSX
I'm confused.
SureWhat are you saying, that free is better than usable?
Don't try to tell me what I'm saying. I use X11 all day, every day, and I find it remarkably usable. I also find it free. If you're too retarded to learn something different from what you've currently got, no-one is forcing your hand. Use whatever damned software you can afford, but don't try to assert that just because you paid ridiculous amount of money for rehashed open-source software that it's superior to what we all use for free. We don't buy it, in more ways than one.Or that I should scrap my entire operating system and all my programs and spend my time which obviously is worth nothing to load up linux and blender to use it.
Frankly I don't give a toss what you do. But for the record, the last Ubuntu linux installation took me a grand total of 30 minutes, and unless you're costing your time at $500 per hour, this works out cheaper by FAR than buying OSX, and this doesn't even take into account the time it takes to install OSX, or the time it takes to load X11 on top of OSX, or even the time it takes for you to rock up to Slashdot and dribble on about how superior you think your OS is, which seems to be mandatory for OSX users. This sounds like the exact attitude others have complained about with this program's GUI, the Gimp GUI, problems with linux in general.
To me it sounds like whinging. Quit whinging and put your brain into gear. I have absolutely no usability issues with the Gimp or Blender. And yes I do actually use both. I made the 'India' Enlightenment-0.17 animated background, at http://www.get-e.org with Blender, for example. What have you done?Telling everyday users "you are idiots and doing things all wrong, and if you don't like how it is go and make it yourself" is not how you win users.
That's the key misconception here ... I'm not trying to win over the lowest common denominator. You are. I'm happy if only those with some brains and motivation adopt Linux. I'm perfectly happy with others using Windows, OSX, or whatever the hell they want. Do what you want, for Christ's sake. But, hey, you are an elite linux user. You wouldn't want normal people interfering with you bragging rights.
Up yours too, buddy. In my experience, it's always the OSX users who are the worst at this. Linux users do have a certain pride, but not undeserving, I might add. -
Window manager
Screw the enormous desktop environments. All you need to do is be able to click, drag, resize, minimize, hide, redisplay, and select running applications.
UWM takes the cake on full functionality, configurability, a little bit of window decoration, and written completely with standard Xlibs (so no extraneous junk), and the compiled binary, on Debian, is still only 92k.
If you want a little more eye-candy I used to suggest Enlightenment, but E17 is about as large as almost anything else. E16 is still rather light, weighing in at 660k (again, Debian Sid) and not having many external library requirements. That's a little bit dishonest, though, in that my system does include most of the glib/gtk and kdelibs which are necessary for various applications.
Anything which requires HAL/FAM/bonobo, however, stays the FSCK off my system.
I remember when one could go from a bare HD, through LFS, and on through BLFS, and a have a fully functioning system with X11/gtk/glib/multimedia/filesharing/etc in about 4 days on what was, at the time, semi-standard hardware (around 500 MHz CPU and 256 mb RAM). Now, to have a comparable modern day desktop Linux OS, it'll still take about 4 days of compiling--but with a 2 GHz CPU and 1 gb RAM.
Bloat-free software is a way of life... and the way to go. -
Re:Site is down..
If the merger fails we still have Englightenment
-
You need enlightening.
No. You are wrong. Enlightenment is so much more than a WM. http://www.get-e.org/
PS: why does /. still show you the [get-e.org] bit even though I only typed the url without htmlising it. -
Re:Life is too short!
Fluxbox is enormous compared to the sheer genius and simplicity of UWM/UDE.
If people want eye candy inside of a wm which is still sane and doesn't attempt to take over your system why aren't more people looking at Enlightenment? -
Re:More articles
I've always looked forward to owning a machine which could provide the horsepower to make Project Looking Glass feasible to run. Until then, though, Enlightenment is the best bang-for-the-buck desktop environment out there, and UDE is still the lightest fully functional window manager available.

Vista? January?
What about right now? My co-workers are all running Vista on their Intel 64-bit desktops with the incredible Aero enhancements. I have to say that this is probably the best Windows EVAR. It even gives Mac OS X a run for it's money but that might be going too far. Fortunately, I use Enlightenment on 64-bit Gentoo so I've been running with all these features for the past three years. But, it's nice to know that the rest of the world is catching on to what's possible.

Re:"KDE 4.0: Now even more bloated!"
KDE has a tendency to fill every users system with crap that nobody uses.
And E or GNOME doesn't?
You, my dear sir, are an idiot. Not everyone shares the same interests, and it is practically impossible to find anyone who uses every single piece of software provided by a desktop environment.
What would nice however if this new technology used unix-style seperation of tasks, so that every window manager could use it, i.e. programs with commandlines like x_video_stream video.mpeg --window 12385 --default-x-server --size 320,240 --deinterlace, and stream_from_network_to_pipe nfsfile pipetouse.
This, more than anything else, would make more people use them because their usage can be CUSTOMIZED. Hiding stuff in an API is a mistake. -
Re:Out of all the things to mimic, start button!?!
Brace yourself when you upgrade to e17 dude.

Re:Sod Gnome & KDEBTW, the Gnome menu's not hard to edit unless you're afraid of a text editor.
;)Kind of true, but not really. When the release occurred, you had to edit the XML files using a text editor. However, it was XML and I really didn't have time to sit down and figure out what entry did. Plus, the MIME editor was gone as well so all my icons got screwed up and trying to find that file was a pain as well. There was little to no documentation whatsoever. That's what really pissed me off.
E17, on the other hand, has utilities for creating icons and stuff, but the utility for editing the menu doesn't work very well. So, you basically have to use the terminal to copy the files by hand to whichever menu directory you want. Then there's a simple file that lists the icons in order by filename. How much more simple can you get? Plus, get-e.org has an excellent manual that describes the whole process.

Re:enlightenment.org?
Try http://www.get-e.org/ this is the new version I have been using it and seems to be rock solid
-
Re:enlightenment.org?
Yes, and it does seem to be down. Try enlightenment.org.au, enlightenment.sf.net, or http://get-e.org/ (thanks to the helpful people in ##enlightenment at freenode)

E does have a Menu Editor!
E17 has had a menu editor, called Entangle, for a few weeks now. All you have to do is checkout E17 and the E17 apps from CVS. You can add, remove, and edit icons in the menus or on the icon bar by right-clicking them like you'd expect to in a modern desktop environment.
"emerge e" is all that's required on Gentoo, other distros will be doing it manually. There is some good documentation at Get-E.org. -
Re:Stable, beautiful....
Interesting, I've been using it for about 3 months on my A64 rig and it's been working fine here. You can get distribution-specific installation instructions here, although I can only attest to the validity of the Gentoo install instructions since that's what I use.
-
Re:Stable, beautiful....
From the default root menu (left click on background) go to Configuration > Menu Editor. You'll need a decent eapp package to be able to bring up all common applications, or you can read up on how to make your own eapp packages. Pre-packed eapp themes and lots of good documentation on http://www.get-e.org/

Re:Apple?
Linux has come a long way in the GUI department. (and generally *nix, too) Have you seen Enlightenment DR17? http://get-e.org/ =)
-
Get-e.org
As the enlightenment website says in 'news' somewhere, http://get-e.org/ is quite useful. It's probably less effort to follow this site then bothering to change your setup entirely. Go with whatever distribution you prefer.

Re:I'll probably be modded down, but....
Didier's Fedora repository has up-to-date FC3 packages that work just fine in FC4 (using them atm, in fact), however the site seems to be down at the moment...
Development has actually been moving very rapidly in the last few months as E17 reaches maturity. Get-E is a good place to watch for user-related updates. Or, if you're more interested in the developer work, there's Edevelop. -
I'll probably be modded down, but....I already have a lot of these features via Enlightenment DR17. It's not finished yet but in terms of eyecandy and dynamic rendering its very impressive indeed.
I think its great that X is getting a universal architecture for this sort of stuff, but I'll be disapointed if Rastermann and others dont have some sort of input in this, mainly because DR17 is showing me how *fast* this sort of thing can be (faster than KDE in the case of DR17 and a 2 second boot-time on my AMD 2600+).
As for applications made using the Enlightenment Foundation Libraries.... wow...! Entice is absolutely amazing, totally dynamic and animated, as well as mainly transparent, perfect for an image viewer.
The point is that you don't realise how USEFUL these sort of features are. Why shouldn't menus in an image viewer fade in and out and be semi-transparent? When you use it, it makes perfect sense.
I know there will be people who consider this sort of tech a waste of resources, and it can certainly be abused. However, if it's done properly this type of environment can add a LOT to your user experience.
I suggest you try DR17 to see exactly how impressive this sort of tech can be!
