Re:debian is better for n00bs
I have to agree that the main plus point to Debian is its stability. I'm not using it right now; I've got an Eee PC and am using an Ubuntu/Debian-based distro called Easy Peasy which is aimed very specifically at netbook users. The only times I've managed to crash my Eee was when I simply just pushed the hardware to do too much, too quickly, causing the whole system to grind to a standstill. Mea culpa.

Re:Comparisons like this don't mean squat...
You might try easy peasy, I haven't had any trouble with it on my Eee PC 900.

Yes there are more Linux alternatives for these...
Debian Eee
Gentoo Eee
EasyPeasy
Ubuntu Of course Ubuntu has a Eee flavor of the kernel, I chose to go a full blown Hardy Heron install on my netbook. I was given mine by a friend who was gonna throw it away. I removed the Xandros that was on it and installed Ubuntu and other than a bit of fun hacking around with it, it's quite useless other than using the terminal. Firefox on the web with it is crap, no memory whatsoever so if you have more than 1 tab open it takes forever to do anything. Forget about compiling something while websurfing cause that won't happen. My advice to people thinking about getting these, for the price if you double it, you get a pretty kick ass laptop these days. Go for the laptop, more power, more space, more ram, more CPU, more functional! -
eee 900 + win7I use a EEE 900, i've had eeebuntu http://www.eeebuntu.org/, EasyPeasy http://www.geteasypeasy.com/ and eeedora http://wiki.eeeuser.com/howto:eeedora running everything out of the box.
But, since you seem to be a windows fan, why not try win7 beta?
I tried it, everything worked out of the box, but i'm a *nix person, so eeebuntu went on it again in my case. -
EasyPeasy
I had very good results with EasyPeasy on my EEE 901. Everything (incl. webcam, wifi, network, sound, hotkeys, etc.) works like a charm without any tweaking necessary. It's based on Ubuntu.

Easy-Peasy on 700 series
I've got a 700 series and have been using Easy Peasy, which is a successor to Ubuntu-EEE (one of the other Ubuntu-derived distros). Despite the lame name, it's a fairly nice Ubuntu-derivative. My main complaint about it is that it tries to maximize almost everything, and sometimes does so to my dialog windows etc (I'm sure there's a setting to turn that off, but I haven't found where yet).
Other than that, overhead is fairly low and it's easy to navigate.

Re:Easy Peasy
Careful here. I've had trouble getting good wireless Internet access with easy peasy, even when the wireless connection is said to be excellent.

Easy Peasy distro
Easy Peasy is the rebranding of Ubuntu-eee and uses Ubuntu 8.10 as its upstream. So it's the next version up from the Ubuntu-eee that others have mentioned. It works great on my wife's eeePC 1000.

Easy Peasy?
Ok I have an AA1 rather than an eee pc, but Easy Peasy works fine(I did an update and the issues it did have went).

Re:New screen resolution a few days before release
Yeah but not everything works. Thunderbird & Lightning is unusable.
I've used Thunderbird on an EEE 701 and I think "unusable" is going a bit too far. Main problem ISTR is that, for the account setup dialogues, you need to know the alt-drag trick to pan the window around the screen - but once it was set up it was OK. Evolution on EasyPeasy <SideshowBob>(shudder)</SideshowBob> is the same.
Of course, if Asus hadn't drunk the Kool Aid and lost interest in Linux on the EEE, tightening up the dialogue boxes on the key apps would hardly take a Manhattan Project.
