Re:Open-Source for sure
Well, the user interface of the Gimp is more like something different. But Gimpshop, which is a 'fork' of the Gimp, is much more like Adobe Photoshop. I like it.

Re:"But where is Photoshop?" : my Ubuntu story...
So either install Gimpshop to make The Gimp look like Photoshop, or pay $40, get Crossover office, and install Photoshop the easy way in Linux. Probably the best thing to do is disable a clean install of windows from the internet, set up a FAT32 partition for Windows to Linux transfers, then she can do her Photoshop work in windows and her online work in Ubuntu. I did the same for my daughter, she is 12 and knows that windows is for her games, and Edubuntu is for everything else. Windows is a great operating system as long as it stays unnetworked.

Re:It's about time
1-4 all depend on GEGL.
panning with a single keypress + mouse drag (one cannot simply press space and pan around the image with the mouse)
Will be in 2.4.
more GUI manipulation flexibility - ability to reorganize the whole UI into single MDI window similar to Photoshop or Corel PhotoPaint
AFAIK the developers believe this will be much work with little benefit, because Windows is neither the platform they use nor their main "market". By analogy: is the Macintosh version of Photoshop MDI capable?
support for "workspace themes"
Someone would have to keep this up to date and evidently the GIMP developers would rather concentrate to improve user expierence for GIMP users then to conventrate on Photoshop switchers. As I see it if there actualy is demand for a Photoshop like GIMP then Gimpshop will flourish, time will tell.

Gimpshop!
Ahem:
Gimpshop. It's a great attempt at making The Gimp more comprehensible to people with a Windows/Photoshop background. And like The Gimp, it too is free. -
Err... GIMPShop?
GIMP has a pretty good separation between the interface and the backing engine. Because of this, you can get something like GIMPShop, which is a Photoshop-style interface atop GIMP's engine. So if you really hate the GIMP's interface, don't use it. Sheesh.
Also, when you say that Photoshop has scripting, do you mean that you can use a full-featured scripting language like Perl to execute Photoshop commands, possibly without even opening the GUI? Or is it an attempt to make a scripting language without requiring the user to type, by recording actions and making the user drag them around? I only saw it once, but it looked like the latter. I could, of course, be wrong.
I still wish GIMP had the "Cutout" plugin that Photoshop has had for years and years. I loved that thing, and "Posterize" just looks like junk in comparison. -
Re:GIMP
Not as good as photoshop is even highly subjective. I personally like it better for a number of reasons, code bloat being a chief one.
True Gimp doesn't have CMYK, and maybe one or two other features that can't possibly matter, but for 99% of graphics editors, webmonkeys, and photographers or digital photography workers, the gimp does it all.
If it's the interface that bugs you, you can also check out:
http://www.gimpshop.net/
Which lays it out more like photoshop.
Peace!

Re:Extra Speculation.
Your ability to adjust to a mildly different menu (and I'm not a huge fan of either menu, actually), you may be more comfortable with GimpShop, a gimp derivative.

Enjoy!

PS Yes, I know it still doesn't have CMYK or whatever, so, you know.... -
Re:Hmm?
Now if the gimp could match photoshop in ease of use we might be there

Re:What's wrong with the interface?
For the layout/windowing issue, there is Gimpshop. http://www.gimpshop.net/
(I don't use it, and have only heard about it from here, so I don't know if that is what you are after.) -
Re:Comments from people who actually create Creati
If you are looking to see if it has similar power to Photoshop without having to learn a new interface, try GimpShop, which is the GIMP with a Photoshop interface.
-
Lets call it..GNU Image Manipulation Program (because that's basically what it is)
You're (probably) refering to this story. IMHO GIMP is a great name, or at least as good as Ps would be for Phostoshop. A more justified criticism would be directed against the GIMPs somewhat unintuitive GUI. Then, there are historical reasons to not do that...
But, as others have pointed out, with GIMP you have a choice: GIMPShop (which is still somewhat immature). For lazy readers:
GIMPShop is a free Open Source image editor that is similar to the popular Adobe Photoshop. Specifically GIMPShop is a version of the GIMP that has been edited to be more user-friendly for Photoshop users.
[...]
GIMPShop was orginally developed for Mac OS X, but has been ported to Windows, Linux, and Solaris.

Re:I don't use Ubuntu...
Check out Gimpshop. It's a version of the Gimp customised to behave as closely as possible to Photoshop. http://www.gimpshop.net/

Re:Let's talk about the elephant in the room.I've got bad news for you...
1) I'm a professional software developer... (software systems analyst by profession)
2) I'm an arrogant prick... (it helps in getting MY way in a project)
and
3) some people HAVE got off their butts and forked their own version of the GIMP...
Now get the fsck off my back

reminder : GimpShop already exists!
1 - You want a GUI which looks like Photoshop? Get Gimpshop and stop whining! 2- Now, what about comparing GimpShop to Photoshop?
