Obligatory: Intel CPU Backdoor Report (Jan 1 2018)
Intel PR: I warned you about -1, this is now being posted on multiple threads
Change log:
2018/01/01 - Added 14 Useful Links. Disable Intel ME 11 via undocumented NSA "High Assurance Platform" mode with me_cleaner, Blackhat Dec 2017 Intel ME presentation, Intel ME CVEs (CVSS Scored 7.2-10.0)Intel CPU Backdoor Report
The goal of this report is to make the existence of Intel CPU backdoors a common knowledge and provide information on backdoor removal. What we know about Intel CPU backdoors so far:
TL;DR version
Your Intel CPU and Chipset is running a backdoor as we speak.
The backdoor hardware is inside the CPU/Bridge and the backdoor firmware (Intel Management Engine) is in the chipset flash memory.
30C3 Intel ME live hack:
[Video] 30C3: Persistent, Stealthy, Remote-controlled Dedicated Hardware Malware
@21:43, keystrokes leaked from Intel ME above the OS, wireshark failed to detect packets.[Quotes] Vortrag:
"the ME provides a perfect environment for undetectable sensitive data leakage on behalf of the attacker"."We can permanently monitor the keyboard buffer on both operating system targets."
Decoding Intel backdoors:
The situation is out of control and the Libreboot/Coreboot community is looking for BIOS/Firmware experts to help with the Intel ME decoding effort. If you are skilled in these areas, download Intel ME firmwares from this collection and have a go at them, beware Intel is using a lot of counter measures to prevent their backdoors from being decoded (explained below).
Backdoor removal:
The backdoor firmware can be removed by following this guide using the me_cleaner script.
Removal requires a Raspberry Pi (with GPIO pins) and a SOIC clip.2017 Dec Update:
Intel ME on recent CPUs may be disabled by enabling the undocumented NSA HAP mode, use me_cleaner with -S option to set the HAP bit, see me_cleaner: HAP AltMeDisable bit.Useful links (Added 2018 Jan 1):

Tiny Tiny RSS, then MiniFlux
I was dependent on Google Reader for the daily news (including Slashdot).
When it shutdown, I did not want to go to yet another online service that can shutdown, so I opted for a self hosted solution.
First, I used Tiny Tiny RSS for a few years. It worked well. I ran it on my home server. Written in PHP and using MySQL made it easy to host.
One day, it was choking on feeds from a certain site, and stopped updating.
So I switched to the original MiniFlux reader. Again, it is written in PHP, so easy to host. It can use either SQLite, MySQL, and other databases.
The same developer has gone in a different direction, with MiniFlux 2, which uses Go, and PostgreSQL (only!). The developer describes it as 'opinionated!'
Using Go is an odd choice here, since this is not an application that has to be super fast. The slowest parts will be retrieving feeds (limited by the speed of the network and servers that host the feeds), or reading the database. Moreover, being a single executable, it does not integrate with your existing Apache or Nginx (if you already have them and want to use existing SSL certificates,
...etc.) and therefore has to run on a different port. PostgreSQL only is higher maintenance than MySQL, and if I don't not run PostgreSQL already, then I will not install, configure and maintain PostgreSQL just for the this one application. So for now, the original MiniFlux does the job adequately, running behind SSL and password protected, so not much chance for a vulnerability getting exploited. Tiny Tiny RSS had a better user interface, but you get used to MiniFlux quickly. It even uses short cut keys that are like vim (j, k,
...) -

Obligatory: Intel CPU Backdoor Report (Jan 1 2018)

Criteria of "better"
Depends on your criteria defining better.
One could also consider the opensource friendliness of the chipset :
- Broadcom's VideoCore is one of the few ARM chips where everything running on the ARM core can be opensource upstream code (Raspbian updates its kernel regularily). All the proprietary blobs are restricted to the DSPs handling video. You can even run without them (specially if you aren't interested in processing video, but use the pi as a micro server).(The Freescale family of chips selected by Purism for their Librem 5 smartphone is another example that can be run 100% of opensource).
(I suspect that the RISC-V will also bring interesting free-software friendliness)- Lots of other chips limits you to kernel version "whatever happened to be popular on Android back then, now you're stuck with it". You're stuck with antique kernels full of blobs.
One could consider the community :
Raspberry Pis are among the most popular SBC, have gathered a ginormous community of users.
That means you can easily find tons of answers for common questions easily on forums and other web ressources,
lots of add-on products will be specially be designed with raspberries in mind
etc.In the few case I've researched the subject: the cases of cheaper board with higher-clocked CPUs and more features touted on the bullet list provided by the marketeers, tend to also use much cheaper chips with crappier Linux support and although they tout lots of GPIO pins, those aren't 1:1 compatible with Pi (nor even follow any attempts of standard like HAT).
They're great if you only plan to interface them with extremely generic hardware (basically if you mostly attach your stuff on the USB ports) or if you're making your own hardware (where the only requirement you have regarding the GPIO pins is that they exist).Raspberry Pi basically has managed to become the IBM PC of the home computer : sure, better things exist elsewhere. But that's what everything is palying with.
And if like me you're not the world's best expert in SBCs, better to stick with the most popular and most widely supported stuff. -
Re:systemd dependancy
I shouldn't feed the trolls, but the answer is, technically, no, Gnome does not require systemd to run. It does, however require a number of services such as ConsoleKit, which are provided by systemd. For most distros, then, systemd is a hard dependency. But it's only that way because no one seems that interested in providing the necessary services outside of systemd proper. There's nothing that says systemd has to be the system that provides this and other services. Distros are free to build their own equivalents of these services without using systemd if they want. In fact early on there was a non-systemd ConsoleKit, but no one seemed that interested in it, so it died.
You can whine about this all you want, but I don't see you coding your own init system and providing third-party daemons and services to replace its functionality. There is someone who is doing this, though, and could probably use some additional resources: https://github.com/dantrell/ge...

Re:Not invented here
Yes, and a few other location coding systems are similar as well. However, Google have their reasons for creating a new system. You can find their evaluation of the various systems explained here:
https://github.com/google/open...
That write-up is pretty much a perfect case study of the classic xkcd comic "There are 14 competing standards".
However, given the sheer power of Google and ubiquity of GMaps, it will prevail. It also has a bunch of benefits over all the other options, most of which don't necessarily tie it to Maps.
I for one welcome our new Plus-sized overlords.

Re:64 bit OS ?
>Any sign of a 64 bit Raspbian yet ?
You can try this: https://github.com/bamarni/pi6...
Realistically though, on 1GB of RAM you're likely to notice a slight performance degradation moving to 64 bit due to the larger pointer sizes taking up more of the limited RAM. There probably are use cases which could benefit from a 64 bit OS on a 1 GB RAM pi, but they are few.
I'm hoping that a future model 4 will have more than 4GB, where 64bit will be a net benefit.

Only if you don't understand the comic, or don't understand the write-up, or both.
The point of the comic is that there are a whole bunch of standards and the idea is to invent a single new standard to replace them all. Which doesn't work, and just adds to the pile of standards.
The point of the plus codes writeup is to evaluate the existing standards to see if any of them meets the requirements of one particular set of use cases. Since it's determined that no existing standard does the job, a new one is created, not to replace the others but to address the requirements at hand.

Re:Why?
Japanese addresses are almost useless for locating a building unless you have the neighborhood's map at hand: Because the numbers are assigned more or less chronologically, standing in front of Naninani-ku 1-3-1 does not mean you are anywhere near Naninani-ku 1-4-1. Unless you're in one of the places that uses a different system, which may be more systematic for coarse locations but not much more helpful for building locations.
"Plus Codes" are just a radix-20 method for expressing latitude and longitude. If you know how far away 38.8039,-77.022 is, that is only because you have a lot of practice using that notation. A "ten digit" Plus Code (which is 11 characters long because they add that plus sign) has resolution of 0.000125 degrees in both latitude and longitude, so it gives more precise location than your 15-character string.
Overall, I would say that Google devised Plus Codes because they didn't know about MGRS, or wanted to make something quasi-proprietary. It is weird that they spend so much space complaining about other lat/long-based locating systems without applying the same rules to Plus Codes.
W3W's major drawbacks are that it is proprietary and that it needs a huge database to translate locations. A minor drawback is that it breaks down at sea.

Re:Extensions killed the beast
I myself switched over to Pale Moon once Firefox started killing off features and pretending to be Chrome.
I would recommend you ditch NoScript and check out uMatrix. It is a full, and better (and without the whole AdBlock controversy) replacement to NoScript. As well as CookieMonster, and other resource blockers, allowing control over loading of not just JS/Cookies but also CSS, images, media, and more.
