As a Canadian, I think this is great news!

Aren't things ripe to repeat this same message......except with "GOOGLE" instead of Microsoft?
Google's new email offering, gmail, is what everyone's talking about! And people are confused about Google's "tracking" of the messages you send and putting ads on it.
So a letter that explains that Google's testing a new email system (true!) and that they're using their search technology to track emails would be beleived by enough people to make a new round of this chain letter spread even faster than it ever had!
C'mon
/. folks! Here's a challenge! Write a letter and sent it to a dozen of your most gullible friends! -

Re:use of JavaScript
I can say one thing cool about google mail, the heavy, working use of JavaScript is pretty cool.
It's also pretty crippling. Google has gone the way of Hotmail (via their recent site redesign) and killed the ability to open any of the navigational links in a new window or tab. In Mozilla, I can normally middle-click to get the link in a new tab. However, in GMail, if I want to open up my "Sent Mail" separate from my main GMail window, I'm out of luck. (The only links in GMail that are actual links are the boilerplate ones, "Sign Out", and "Help.")
If you'd like to see for yourself, e-mail cfinke@gmail.com for a GMail invite. -
Re:What is the fuss here
The archiving feature of gmail is really cool and nice. Watch for clones of that feature in the comming months.
More like, "It's been done before." I have a webmail app I've been working on for about 8 months, and I had the archive feature, as well as the labeling feature, programmed months before the GMail announcement. They're not doing anything revolutionary; they're just taking a bunch of nice features that already exist and consolidating them into the same application.
On a separate note, if you want a GMail invite, e-mail me at cfinke@gmail.com. -
All you need
I have a client that needs a server with quite a bit of storage, reasonable level of reliability and redundancy and all for as cheap as possible.
So what you need is this.

the problem isNow days, the good jobs go to some guy with 12 years experience on his resume and a couple degrees, and everything else goes to some shop in another country. I'm not actually against outsourcing in all regards, but those of us still in school, or just getting out, are left out of the loop, even though we are often better coders than the others.

Still some issuesGmail still has some compatibility issues with Safari. I often have to refresh after going to gmail.com to get to see the actual page. Also, creating filters tends to crash the browser. Finally, it doesn't seem to fit wide messages into my browser well. The ads overlay much of the message. Looks like a pretty basic formatting error though. I expect these problems to be fixed in the future.
I don't consider Gmail ready, but it is great even with the afore-mentioned issues. Conversations rock, and search, while not as good as Mail, is quick and easy. Keyboard shortcuts and auto-fill email addresses add important features to webmail that I would normally only expect from a POP or IMAP email account.
I've got a couple gmail invites to give away, if anyone wants to try it out. Email me at phatpat@gmail.com. -

Re:I did it before, and I'll do it again
I've got some invites too. Email me at phrosty@gmail.com with your first/last name and something witty and I'll send you one.
-
I did it before, and I'll do it againI've you'd like a Gmail account, send me an email at chrislamothe@gmail.com and as I get invites I'll hook you up. I've hooked up 18 people this week alone.
What I noticed was that as soon as Yahoo announced they were upping their email limit, Gmail started letting me invite about 5 people a day.
Understand that I already have a backlog of 10 slashdotters waiting for accounts, but I labeled them all and as the invites trickle in, I'll pass them on...my friends and family and irc buddies are already hooked up.
Cheers!

Re:The Truth About Hotmail
Since Yahoo upped their limit Google has been giving me five Gmail invites a day... ChrisLamothe@gmail.com I'll be glad to hook you up, already done it for two slashdot strangers.

Re:The Truth About Hotmail
There is more to Gmail than just the space, though. There is also the amazing, sleak interface (that runs almost like a client app) and wonderful Google searching of your messages. Plus, it is so damn fast.
That said, I just got five more invitiations today and all my friends already have Gmail. If anyone wants an invite (preferably Hotmail users), then shoot me an e-mail at adpowers@gmail.com. I'll save a spot for Arlen, other than that, it is first come first serve. -
Re:Threaded messaging
Google's Gmail does this. The whole thing is run with incredibly fancy JavaScript/DHTML, which is why only a few browsers are currently supported (they're working on a plain HTML version, thankfully). The messages in "conversations" may be expanded and collapsed as desired. Perhaps you should buy an invite from somebody on eBay so that you can check it out yourself.

Sun Grid Engine, at least for Maya
I don't know what the setup for After Effects and such looks like, but I managed to build a pretty good Sun Grid Engine system for distributing Maya batch renders. SGE is free, works on Linux or Solaris, x86 or SPARC (I obviously used the x86 linux binaries), and seems to be very well designed. I set up a pretty solid system for netbooting the clients, running them diskless (or with local swap drives), adding new clients on the fly (all scripted), and it all worked flawlessly. You could submit a batch job and it would distribute it per-frame as an array job to all the different nodes. Or you could just run SETI on all of them...
It's since been taken down in favor of running Alfred (because I no longer use Maya's builtin renderer, we've moved on to MTOR and PRMan), but I still have all of the files and scripts for it. If anyone's interested, I'd be happy to share: sabretooth@gmail.com -

1gb Relieves Spam Concerns
I have subjected my e-mail address, afriguru@gmail.com to the same abuse. by redirecting all e-mail addresses that recieve lots of junk mail to this one and posting the address unprotected to lots of websites and newsgroups. At the initial stage, a lot of 419 scam mails got through, but now I hardly get any spam. No false positives for me so far.

Re:I disagree
I'll put my crudely coded Javascript quicksort algorithm against your finely honed 100% assembly bubblesort algorithm any day. Not only will my algorithm beat the pants off of your algorithm, but I'll also code it in far less time and with way fewer debugging sessions than you would.
You're on. After my exams are over, I'll code a bubblesort algorithm in assembly language. I wonder how large the dataset will have to be before you win? Mail me. -
Google to the rescue!Seems like a perfect application of Google's mail technology. Baltimore has tons of mail which needs to be searchable. Google has a scheme for holding and searching large quantities of mail. Plus, even the spam is worth keeping, should Baltimore decide to file suit against someone for attacking the City's technological infrastructure by flooding their servers with spam. Scott Richter, I'm looking in your direction.

filling up a Gig...er, a TB...
So, I've had a gmail account for a while now and decided to try to get people to fill it up by posting it all over my website and in the comments here at
/. and a few other places. So far, only 180MBs have been filled, most of it by people responding to my request to spam me and the rest from actual spam bots who grabbed the info from where I posted the email, like here: cksampleiii@gmail.com. Please feel free to send as many attachments as you can handle to this address and let's see if we can get my original experiment to its original projected limit 1GB, even though it is now listing as 1TB. My other gmail account (which I haven't publicized at all) is still only at 1GB. Things that I've learned so far: the spam filter in Gmail is sporadic. Of course, this is probably b/c I haven't bothered to train it at all, but nevertheless, it seems to only catch the most widely known spam, while at other times it will suddenly start reporting messages from a source that have gotten through before as spam, which is odd, and as far as I can tell, via no discernible methodology. Some people have sent me over 100 emails with pron porn xxx in the subject and body with no blocking whatsoever, whereas other people have been sending me very innocent messages with large attachments and the first 10 get through and the rest get blocked (although this doesn't happen across the board / consistently). Also, Gmail says it supports 10MB attachments, but it would seem to mean that the email itself + attachment has to register at under 10MB as I've had a few 9.7MB files that have failed to send. Otherwise pretty good webmail implementation. -
Top posting
A disappointing thing in Gmail is when it comes to replying to messages.
It places the cursor at the first line, to mimic the Outlook brain dead behavior, thus encouraging top posting :(
Also, Gmail doesn't support PGP signatures.

gmail beta testingI've been beta testing for a while. No, my account isn't for sale. Seems kinda cheesy and just about guaranteed to get shut down. Anyway, about gmail. I've found a lot of stuff to like about gmail and a lot of features missing.
Like: No spam. Not a single freaking message. Either they have an excellent filter or I haven't spread it around enough. Let's try an experiment: sclifford@gmail.com. Guess that'll be a good test of their spam filter. Cringe.
Anyway, the interface is uncluttered - just the gmail logo and a "star" flag for important messages. Everything else is hyperlinks or dropdowns. It's simple and fast.
But as a web application developer, I'm underwhelmed so far.
I think a simple icons-w/text-based GUI is easier to work with and not terribly bandwidth intensive. Anyway, there's no way to import my contacts yet, or my address book, or a PST file (or other mail format), or import mail from another service (that's stretching).
Anyway, while I think it's crass to sell your gmail account (and probably isn't kosher), doubly so for those who buy one. It's free, people - get a blogger account and make your own. Caveat emptor - it ain't worth $199.

Eh?
I hope hackers@gmail.com has good spam filters.

gnaa releases new study
(GNN) GNAA, Nigeria - The Gay Nigger Association of America today released its findings from a recent study in numerical and alphabetical gender. Spokesperson Lysol confirmed what most people were already speculating--the number 12 is gay.
The thirteen month study included participants from many planets and countries inhabited by gay niggers, and included the numbers 0-30 and all the letters of the english alphabet. Certain discrepencies included the perceived gender of the letter W and the letter T. Some felt W to be wholly female and thus repugnant, but others felt T was more of a transvestite or effeminate male letter. Others still muddled the presumptions by finding certain letters to have no gender at all.
However, it was unanimously found that the number 12 was homosexual. Not a single participant of the fourteen million interviewed found the number twelve to be anything but wholly queer by design. Next month, a new study conducted by the GNAA will attempt to discover the true colors of letters and numbers, in a similar fashion to this study. It will then be settled once and for all: Is 12 black and thus the true number of the Gay Nigger?
