  1. Re:Here's an Idea for Amazon on Apple Movie Store Only Serving Disney Films? · · Score: 1

Amazon does this with some books now, through a program called Amazon Upgrade. You pay a few bucks extra for instant access to the entire book online. Here's an example: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0072255595/ fonerbooks-20/ref=nosim

    The money quote:

"After all, once we get away from the idea that the pipes just move bits around without really caring what data is being transmitted, it's a small step to discriminating against some forms of content and then targeting specific sites, services or users."

What if all the big ISPs start charging $0.10/min for VOIP? Or $1.00/mb from "long-distance" sites? Where does it end?
  4. Re:Two possible reasons on No Anti-Virus in Vista · · Score: 1

It's interesting that Microsoft created a problem (susceptibility to viruses) and is prevented from fixing it (anti-virus) because it would be anti-competitive against people already serving the need.

I didn't mean change nature, I meant change how we prevent it from harming us. IE levies in New Orleans. Make sure that we are set up to handle harsh storms, blizzards, and droughts. As I said, prediction is hard, but why does that have to stop us?

  9. Commercials on Network TV Downloadable Via iTunes · · Score: 1

I, for one, would gladly pay less for TV shows with commercials. 99 cent episodes with commercials means it would be economically viable to use rather than cable. I don't know if I'm unique, but I often multitask when watching TV, and commercials aren't such an issue, as I just focus on something else.

  10. Regardless of what caused it... on 2005 Will Probably be Warmest on Record · · Score: 1

Regardless of whether this is caused by human activity or not, it WILL have negative consequences. We need to be doing more to predict what will happen, where, and how to minimize the impacts. I know it's difficult, but that's a long shot from impossible.

How about you embed these in tables/bars? Then you don't have to worry about it getting stolen, and you make the process more transparent to the client. And you can keep the standard coasters. Just make it intuitive that the place you put your cardboard coasters is on top of the embedded plastic one.

With childhood obesity, global warming, and terrorism, I would say that despite the fact that they may be impossible to fix, we are obligated to keep trying. They are bad. We can change them for the better. Why give up because the solution will never be entirely complete? We MUST try.

I would say the MPAA and RIAA have the same attitude.

  16. All you can eat on MS & Game Rentals · · Score: 1

Give me a $40/month subscription, with access to 10-20 games, keep the games updated and current, and I'm in. I don't spend anywhere near $480 a year on games (more like $60), but I might be willing to if done right.

  17. Re:Let NASA make up their own minds about risk on Panel Challenges NASA Over Shuttle Safety · · Score: 1

I agree there is inherent danger in sitting atop an absurd amount of rocket fuel. But we should not just accept space travel is dangerous.
It will be dangerous for the first explorers, but when (and I mean when) space travel gets big, you are going to need failure rates much much less than 2 out of every 114 flights.
Progress towards safety is justified. The real question is, we landed on the moon a LONG time ago. Why haven't we come up with a safer solution by now?

  19. Re:Old vehicles are trouble no matter what type! on Panel Challenges NASA Over Shuttle Safety · · Score: 1

It's this way with many government vehicles. Both the military and NASA have very high reliability requirements (with good reason). This makes the initial cost very very expensive, but they get a lot more use out of it. Cars aren't designed to last 20 years. It seems like the shuttle can handle it. Old age didn't bring down Columbia.

  20. Food Distributors on Eat Right, Earn an iPod · · Score: 1

The problem, in my perception, is a lot of food distributors deal primarily in unhealthy food. It's easier to produce, package, and store mass quantities of the stuff. All-natural, preservative-free food is harder to keep, harder to make, and, above all, expensive.

I find it interesting that so many people here on Slashdot are so averse to new technologies like this. Steam seems like a logical progression with the advent of broadband, but a lot of people feel safer with that past.
