Let's Compare
Japan: Ghost in the Shell 2
America: Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow
Japan: "Robots. Cyborgs."
America: "Stem cells are ew! God hates technology! Stop talking on your cell phone! Step away- from the computer!"
It's the imagination. The American imagination is totally unprepared for the new world. We are still busy playing "cowboys and indians."
I may be wrong, but my understanding is that Cybernetics is just a matter of course in Japan. I doubt they'd call it that, but the fundamental assumptions and understandings, I think are commonplace there. Pretty much everyone's psyched up about technology. Some people like it, some people don't, but nobody denies that it's going to happen.
Here in the states, you talk about this stuff, and they look at you like you've just grown a third arm. "Nah, that'll never happen..." "...well, maybe, in a hundred years, but-..."
I'm amazed at how little Americans know about the state of technology. And of what Americans do know, how little it's penetrated their consciousness.
Americans don't want this stuff in their mind. They don't want to think about it. It's not even that- it's just not even in the imagination.
(That's changing; witness The Matrix, and stuff like that. But contemporary-wise: We're way backwards.) -
Re:Better trailer?
You didn't mention that their showtime lookup sucks too. Yeah, I know it's not playing in my area. At least tell me where it's playing in my state and let me decide if I want to drive to Miami (no) or Jacksonville (still no) to see it. At least I found on another site that it will be playing in Sarasota (about an hour's drive probably) in mid-October. I guess I'll go see it then!

Official Theater Listings
Interesting map there with the imdb. I've been referring people to looking at the official US site for [official dates and locations, as there's a number of places it will be airing beginning after the 17th. For the Europeans on here, so far as I know, it's only been picked up by France thus far, United International Pictures has it and will be releasing on/about Dec 1st 2004. That all being said, I've got my ticket for the 2:30pm show, four and a half hours from now, it's gonna be fantastic.

US official site
Innocence official US site at Go Fish Pictures (subsidiary of DreamWorks)
Far less impressive site though, compared to Japanese official site. I doubt their promotion - at least they should spend enough amount of money for web design, as it should cost not so much as "real" PR. Isn't internet for such virtual advertisement?
Now Japanese official site has gorgeous final trailers in wmv, small/medium/large.
The theme song, "Follow Me" is by Kimiko Itoh, and the new version of her 1989 jazz hit (English profile here). -
