Re:Not everyone agrees
Luckily one can download his tome and see for one's self. The criticism may not be completely wrong but is not absolutely truthful either. (He goes on and on about facial bone structure, associating this with nutritional status during development and growth), and also looks at longevity among other factors.)

Re:Birdstrikes don't always leave blood or feather
It's not just the large birds that one has to worry about. All of the European Barn Swallows have migrated down here, and 3 million of them choose to roost at Mount Moreland -- which is around 2.5 km from and directly in line with RWY 06 at Durban's airport.
The airport authorities are well aware of the potential danger and have installed a specialized radar system solely to keep an eye on the birds during the late evening swarm. If the swarm poses a danger to aircraft, ATC will pick it up and can then delay departures and/or put arrivals in a holding pattern as needed. The swarm, from my own observations when last I was in the area, only lasts around 10-15 minutes.
The local residents have now developed this into a small tourist attraction, which is popular with both bird and plane spotters.

That's nothing
South Africa had similar ones for AGES. List of South African English regionalisms, Image search.
They still can't be bribed, though. New version needed, perhaps the government will issue a tender for that.

Typical "Hype"!
There is nothing new her folks. In the country that I leave in, every so often, the media "breaks" a story and runs with it while it can still inflate their distribution, ratings, etc numbers. This story, like some many other stories before it, will disappear into this air!
Getting back on the topic. I did a quick Google search (viewed first page results only) on the "Secrecy Bill" and "Information Bill". To absolutely no surprise, all the media houses that published the story had no link to the actual bill. And, all the stories were just someone view point and did not actually make reference to any section of the bill. Now, if you inform me about that a bill that is good or bad, I expect to see references to the bill while you argue your point.
I don't know about media in other countries, but, where I live, "hype" is the order of the day! For those would like to read the bill, here is the link : http://www.google.co.za/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=information+bill&source=web&cd=4&ved=0CEAQFjAD&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.info.gov.za%2Fview%2FDownloadFileAction%3Fid%3D118894&ei=KcHMTqqkBMmW8QO_sd35Dw&usg=AFQjCNGn2FalPrO3u_N5pB5yIvXEykWJ8Q&sig2=abHVGv4w5tM8NqMkOmrT7Q
Disclaimer: the above link may not be the latest version of the bill, as I did not go beyond the first page of the search. -

I find Google gives me better results for coding/development research. It also behaves when I do stuff like converting lb/ka -> kg/acre, or whenever I forget the angle of refraction.

Re:Greenhouse gas problem.
Here, LMGTFY
That would be 20 pounds edible protein per acre per year, that is about 8 lb (3.7 kg) per hectare per year.
For comparisson:
up to 15 times more protein per acre than land set aside for meat production.

Re:... So?
I appreciated his fairly tough statements, but, frankly, I would have preferred that he be slightly less merciful and go ahead and fire some of the bureaucrats whose incompetence and malfeasance put Americans in jeopardy. That would have been a much clearer message that we have plenty of tools to find and halt terrorist plots now...and that the only thing that will truly deal with the problem is better intelligence gathering, analysis, and, examinations of why it is that so much of the world is pissed enough with America's policies that even well educated members of society are willing to blow them selves up to attempt to strike at us.
In answer to your question as to why the world gets pissed off at Americans, consider the concept that there were probably some non-Americans on that flight. but clearly it doesn't matter if they were in danger, because Americans were in danger and that's way more important. The Christmas bomber attempted to commit a deplorable crime and put the lives of many PEOPLE in danger. Their nationality makes very little difference to their survival rate I'm sure, but then I am not a statistician.
To answer the grand-parent, your health insurance companies would LOVE to get their hands on your scans, especially without your knowledge. Here is a full body scan taken of you that you yourself do not get to see. I honestly don't know whether the images we see online are mock ups of what would be seen or actual images from the machines, but it seems the machines can not only see through clothes but into the body as well, certainly some of these images show skeletal structure. Are they high enough in resolution to detect large tumors? Small ones? We, the public, don't have enough details for us to make an informed decision. I for one am against any body scan where I don't have control over the results, including the right to review and destroy.

Re:They forgot one
I'm vegetarian for ethical and environmental reasons, but I do believe there is a place for scientific animal research/testing at this point in time.
I love this. I had a girlfriend who was a vegetarian for "environmental reasons". As we drove through the wheat fields on the way to my dad's "meat farm" I asked her to observe nature. When we got to my dad's farm I asked her to compare the environmental impact.
Wheat fields - lush and green, but no natural vegetation anywhere in sight.
"Meat fields" - dry and arid, with undisturbed nature as far as the eye can see.
I have never understood how any environmentally conscious person can eat wheat, rice, maize or soya. Just for reference, here is meat.
For the uninformed and totally ignorant. Meat is farmed in arid areas. Areas are not arid because meat is farmed there. If you have sufficient rainfall/water and a suitable climate, you bulldoze the place and produce (produce) fruit, vegetables, grain, fiber, etc. If not, you try and preserve nature as best you can so that you can use it for grazing. No flora means no income. As for fauna, while efforts are made to manage fauna in grazed areas, pretty much all fauna is considered vermin in ploughed fields.
A meat farmer may destroy the natural habitat by using poor farming methods, but this will inevitably lead to his downfall. A vegetable, wheat, maize, soy, etc. farmer must destroy the natural environment if he wishes to produce anything. And yes, if you wish to produce vegetables in your rooftop garden or basement, you have still destroyed the natural environment first.
So, if you care about nature, eat meat, be it red meat, white meat or fish. -

Manipulated? There doesn't need to be manipulation. Once again, go back to your textbooks. Or at least ask the Oracle or the Collective Unconscious. How many features does the oil market share with perfect competition?

SUV goes electric...eventually
:-)Seriously - it will only be a matter of time, and you will get "conversion" kits to yank out the large petrol engine and replace it with some or other battery powered electric engine.
So, the fuel problem is now solved, and you still sit with the other problems mentioned here.

Re:Lost chance to build up Juggernaut momentum
Mapquest, as I recall, has something like 50% of the online maps and directions market. Google Maps is somewhere around 25%.
Hmm. See, now I can't comment on the US, never been there. But in Africa, Mapquest doesn't exist. Google, on the other hand, is here. On radio, talking about getting google maps updated for all areas in South Africa, then moving on to the rest of Africa. They want any South African (and people in other parts in Africa) to be able to go to google earth and see a picture of their house that is less than 2 days old. I can report (and it's pretty darned easy to check) that Google Maps for South Africa is getting more detail, almost daily.
Where is Mapquest? The do not exist. Not in my world. The US is a large country, but unlike an embarrasingly large portion of the population (you apparently included in that) think, it's not anywhere close to the entire world. In summary, in my world Mapquest doesn't exist. It's pretty clear to me that you don't really know anything and are just sticking up for Google based on raw emotions. Well, good for you, I guess. Me, I'll wait to pass judgement on how awesome an Android phone is until one actually, you know, exists.
All that I see as being pretty clear is that you seem to be baised against anything that doesn't fit into your little (tiny might be more accurate) view of the world. I actually feel sad for you.
My mistake was defending any part of Google against you. My post was never really about Google, and getting into a fight defending Goole was stupid of me. My original point was that Apple may be losing an opportunity to build so much momentum that they cannot be stopped by anything. Do you disagree with that? Android was brought in as something to compare that statement against, a measure. Below is the original quote in case you've forgotten what this was all about.Lost chance to build up Juggernaut momentum
Apple may be about to drop the ball on this one. With Android looking like a (potentially future) winner, Apple are losing the chance to build up momentum as an open mobile platform for developers to experiment on.Now, I'm going to go out on a limb here and blame this on an incomplete understanding of the English language. I have a theory, so bear with me for a few moments.
I'm in roughly the same timezone as the UK and Europe. When I originally posted my comment, it's score quickly jumped to 5, and stayed at around that level for quite some time. Then the US woke up, and before you could snap your fingers my score had been reduced to 0. Not to mention Karma lower than a Ferari's suspension.
My theory is that the UK / Europe readers, who understand words like "Juggernaut", "may" (as in maybe, possibly), "potential", and phrases like "drop the ball" (Although by heavens you should get that one. If not, a quick explanation. It's an idiom based on sports like Rugby (think of American Football without the sissy pads and rules) where if the ball is dropped there is a chance that the opposing team will pick it up and gain control of the game).
Back to my hypothesis. The UK / Europe readers understood me as saying "Apple may be losing an opportunity to gain so much support for their product that nothing really stands any chance of standing against them, not even Android (Google's new Phone OS that sounds really hot and promises wonderful things), assuming Android lives up to the marketing." They read it and 30% thought to themselve "Hmmm, that's an interesting thought", another 20% thinking "Wow, that made me think! I hadn't -

Re:At least...Sometimes I really hate slashdot. Its posters claim to keep themselves informed about technical issues, yet they constantly post untruth after untruth, and spread the very same FUD that they despise.
Please, please, PLEASE stop spreading the utter trash about the "dos aint done till lotus won't run" as if it is some sort of truth. It is not. Repeating it just makes you appear to be either a troll, or someone who unfortunately believed the misinformation trolls that post this crap on this site.
Please read the first few links on this search result and stop yourself spreading FUD in the future
And please, spare me the comments about being a M$$$ $hill. I have no affiliation with microsoft, I just really hate it when people spread misinformation on this site, which then gets repeated infinitely as if it were truth. The less FUD coming from, and aimed at microsoft, the better.

Reminds me of Indiana Jones...
If you know from which Indiana Jones movie this scene is from tell me. I remember Jones facing off
some huge Samurai with swords in the middle of a market place. The Samurai twirls his swords
and delivers one hell of a impressive martial arts show before challenging Jones to attack.
Jones instead just shrugs, draws his colt and shoots the Samurai point blank.
With this analog in mind, it's easy for me to draw my colt and shoot this long missive down with
one single argument: A Wikipedia-like process for a search engine means Administrators decide
what is worthy of inclusion into the index and what is not. Administrators are voted in by peers
