"Rinse, Lather, & Repeat"
"There is an "allow unobtrusive adds" feature in ABP which might provide a solution to this dilemma." - by azalin (67640) on Thursday February 14, @03:55AM (#42893501)
See what John Nagle a contributor to the IP stack itself has to say on that note!
(He posts here on
/., as "Animats", as a user here, a RESPECTED one for great reasons noted near the termination of my post below, has to say about THAT... i.e.-> The STRONG will survive regardless of advertising revenue, & the weak will DIE: Law of the jungle, even an economic one of today!).Additionally, some FACTS you ought be aware of:
NewsFlash: AdBlock doesn't block ALL ADS ANYMORE by default (they ought to call it "almost all ads blocked" instead nowadays, lol), for starters.
Ghostery (advertiser owned, "foxes guard the henhouse" yet again & thus, knowing that + what I stated above about AdBlock too? You'd have to be a "cluck" to use it OR adblock, since they've both "souled out"...)
DNS is RIDDLED with security issues out of NEGLIGENCE mainly!
(Especially since most DNS servers worldwide are UNPATCHED vs. the Kaminsky flaw (DNS redirection poisoning) for 1/2 a decade++ now... pure negligence!).
So - What's better on a myriad of levels for YOU the end-user? THIS (and why in detail):

APK Hosts File Engine 5.0++ 32/64-bit:
Which, if you read the list of what it can do for you as an end user of the resulting output it produces listed in the link above, you'll understand how/why...

Especially vs. competing alternate 'solutions', noted below in AdBlock/Ghostery & yes even DNS servers, next, as 'examples thereof'...
Solutions that used to be good & I even recommended them in security guides I wrote up over the decades now -> http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&tbo=d&output=search&sclient=psy-ab&q=%22HOW+TO+SECURE+Windows+2000/XP%22&btnG=Submit&gbv=1&sei=ka3yUKzxB-6_0QHLroCQCA
That did extremely well for myself (and users of them), for Windows users, for "layered-security"/"defense-in-depth" purposes - the BEST THING WE HAVE GOING vs. threats of all kinds, currently!
(Not anymore though, & certainly NOT far as AdBlock's concerned especially, not after this):

Re:Pathetic.
This isn't entirely accurate, but it's wrong in a way that makes Broder look even worse.
After Tesla's Top Gear debacle, they put logging devices in the cars and had future reviewers agree to their use. This is something that Broder was (or should have been) aware of.

Adblock & Ghostery = inferior to custom hosts
I have NO ISSUE with NoScript though (best addon for FireFox there is imo @ least): HOWEVER - I do with the tools noted in my subject-line above, & here is EXACTLY why (& what I did about it for gratis/100% free, no strings attached) vs.:
A.) Adblock (crippled by default now)
B.) Ghostery (advertiser owned & a tracker itself)
C.) Even DNS servers, especially IF/WHEN run locally on a separate system @ home + setup in recursive mode, which it will HAVE to be so to get data from parent servers & if they're NOT ICANN/Verisign DNSSEC pointed at? You are vulnerable as hell!
(Wasteful as a separate system, or even as a separate service, less wasteful & redundant there though, but still wasteful with its daemons/services & front-ends (in usermode especially) vs. the SINGLE FILE SOLUTION noted below that is part of the IP stack itself, especially since running DNS above & beyond hosts wastes CPU cycles, RAM, & other forms of I/O + thus, by derivation, also electricity, costing you more yet again... that, along with NEGLIGENCE in patching it vs. the Kaminsky flaw for 1/2 a decade++ now worldwide MOSTLY, especially @ the ISP level no less (documented from reputable sources below on tha very note no less)):

Re:What can we DO?
Are you near here?
The northwesternmost building in that frame is the "A" building. That's the executive office building.
The rest of the buildings on campus are labeled through the letter "R". There are a lot of buildings. You can shuttle between them by the on-campus bus service. And watch out! The "J" building has paramilitary security with assault rifles. It's the datacenter. The loading dock is in "C" building. Good luck!
No, I don't know which building is which, other than the "A" building that sits at the end of the circle drive.
Also, you're likely to get shot. Expect the government to actually try to protect those slimebags. They're richer than you are, and obviously more worthy of government help.
If you do get all the way to Hugh Grant, tell him he has the same name as an actor that got caught with a hooker back when that was a scandal. I'm sure he'll love that.
(Disclaimer for the humorless and the FBI: This post is a joke. Go away.)

Supplement that with this
Custom hosts + Opera, & iirc more recently Chromium family ones too, that allow:
---
1.) "By site preferences" for
a.) cookies
b.) scripting
c.) plugins (on demand only, an Opera original)
d.) frames/iframes
e.) & other things that get exploited against you maliciouslyHOW? Easy:
2.) I set a GLOBAL preference for ALL websites first, disabling the above in Opera 12.14 64-bit (excellent by the way & ZERO known security flaws present currently -> http://secunia.com/advisories/product/41248/ )
3.) THEN, I make "exception sites" that MIGHT need cookies &/or javascript for database access, which online banking/shopping/e-commerce sites often DO require, but only as needed (& ONLY what they minimally require for FULL function to facilitate trade there...):
---
Why?
Read below as to WHY I utilize custom hosts files for all of those purposes for more speed, security, reliability, & even more anonymity to an extent vs. other advertiser owned (ghostery), crippled by default (adblock), or riddled by security flaws & negligence (DNS) competing "solutions"...
(Anonymity gains are vs. DNS request logs, lightening their load on THEIR end, a bonus for admins of them, no less AND vs. DNSBL you may not agree with as well!).
All, for more efficacy + safety & speed vs. not only adbanners, but also botnet C&C servers, rogue DNS they use too, trackers/spammers/phishers, known maliciously scripted sites, known servers of malware & FAR more...
More efficiently as well (because custom hosts are a TIGHTLY INTEGRATED SOLUTION & native to the IP stack itself solution, AND, they run in ring 0/rpl 0/kernelmode as a mere text file easily edited filter via a text editor like notepad if need be even FILTER for it, vs. Ring 3/rpl 3/usermode webbrowsers slowed up even MORE by addons layered onto them (a known issue, stack a few in FireFox & see for yourself)):

Untrue "the IP stack provideth" (superior way)
"Scriptable browsers are what makes most ad-blocking features work" - by sgunhouse (1050564) on Thursday February 14, @01:56AM (#42892973)
Per my subject-line above: Here is that more efficient/less redundant FASTER way to do the job of stopping not only trackers, adbanners, botnet C&C servers, bogus DNS they use, spammers/phishers, known malware serving sites + maliciously scripted sites too, & more!
All of which rob you of your monies via taking speed/bandwidth you paid your ISP for monthly out of pocket since they take up, on average, 40% of the "mass" of what you download from a website to view its pages, & CPU cycles, RAM, & other forms of I/O as well - meaning adbanners also cost you in terms of electricity bills raised as well!
If not taking your monies & time since they infest/infect you with malicious code also (plenty of evidence of that is below as well from reputable sites)...
(The program below operates right from when your IP stack loads @ OS startup, &/or 1st request to the web from webbound clients of ALL kinds (Windows + MacOS X) - AND, in not just webbrowsers, but also for example, email programs, if an external program, like Outlook/Outlook Express, eudora & others too since the 1st thing requested IS the hosts file for IP address resolution from host-domain names).
The application solution below is MORE efficient since it doesn't use redundant and yes, advertiser owned or crippled by default browser addons!
Yes, there's proof of that below too... unbelievable as it seems... read on!
For starters:
---
1.) Addons slowdown browsers even more!
(Fact: stack up a few FF addons & see what happens... it's a KNOWN issue!).
2.) A custom hosts file also operates @ a far, Far, FAR faster & more efficient layer of operations too (ring 0/rpl 0/kernelmode vs. browser in ring 3/rpl 3/usermode, being slowed down EVEN MORE by layering in addons - which wouldn't be SO BAD, if they weren't advertiser owned OR crippled by default... see below on that very note!).
3.) It also is TIGHTLY INTEGRATED as part of the IP stack itself, that has over 44++ yrs. of security & speed refinement put into it, written in C & Assembly code (far faster than browser addons like Adblock written in slower javascript, python or perl, & layered in over an already slower usermode app as far as webbound client programs go).

Agreed & more data for you (+ more)... apk
"What a surprise: sleazy advertisers remain sleazy." - by Anonymous Coward on Wednesday February 13, @08:46PM (#42891035)
A lot of data on that note is below from reputable sources & a program I designed back in late 2003 that I kept to myself until mid last year/2012! Use it in other articles you may write later on this very subject (and the program is 100% free no strings attached should you elect to try it as well to use it also)...
You seem to be as "into it" on this note, as I am (almost, you'll see what I mean in the program below). I went & DID SOMETHING about it, for others that they can literally use & yes, it works better than anything else does for that purpose!
(Kept it to myself, & I had it done before competitors did, long before... however, since I was NOT out to harm websites mainly who draw revenues from adbanners, I kept it to myself - until adbanners began to show malicious script (see lists below))!
&
Also the fact ADBANNERS SUCK UP UP TO 40% OF AN AVERAGE WEBPAGE DOWNLOAD in mass sent/received, as well as CPU cycles, RAM, & other forms of I/O also, that you pay for in electricity AND your monthly bill to your ISP for online access!
(Thus, ads steal your bandwidth/speed YOU PAY FOR, in other words, as well as infesting you!)
However: The "explosion" of malware-in-general made me release it "to the masses"...
(From bad scripts, bad adbanners, malware servers, botnets etc./et al)
That happened mostly 2005 onwards imo since I've built up a custom hosts file here since 1997 & have a pretty GOOD idea when it really "kicked into gear" as to exploits in general online REALLY starting up more!
That prompted its release from me to the "general public", as well as adbanners themselves HOUSING MALICIOUS SCRIPT (last link @ the bottom of this post SHOULD interest you on that very note in fact...)).

Here's something I wrote in a program that DOES something about it, & at a more efficient level!
(Ring 0/rpl 0/kernelmode via a TIGHTLY INTEGRATED native part of the IP stack itself, the hosts file, vs. ring 3/rpl 3/usermode browser addons & even DNS servers (the former are KNOWN to slow down webbrowsers too - stack up a few in FireFox & see what I mean...)):

Reconsider that (ads CAN & DO infect you)
Per my subject-line above: See the list of evidences of that over time, listed below...
And?
Witness this program below, since it is a both TECHNICALLY SUPERIOR method of blocking vs. browser addons & more efficient also!
(Since browser addons for that purposed noted below run in already SLOWER ring 3/rpl 3/usermode, vs. hosts being part of tcpip.sys/IP stack & merely a filter for it, running via device driver ring 0/rpl 0/kernelmode too... far, Far, FAR FASTER, & addons slowup webbrowsers (known fact, stack up a few in FireFox for example, & see))!
This program below I designed simply builds up what is a NATIVE TIGHTLY INTEGRATED PART OF THE IP STACK ITSELF UP vs. adbanners (& other threats online such as known maliciously scripted sites/servers/hosts-domains, vs. botnets + their C&C Servers & bogus DNS servers & more...) from 10++ reputable & reliable sources for custom hosts file data!

Something that works WITH Proxomitron
Per my subject-line above, custom hosts files = superior to browser addons!
(Since hosts are a TIGHTLY INTEGRATED native part of the IP stack itself, running in Ring 0/rpl 0/kernelmode, vs. layering ontop of far, Far, FAR SLOWER Ring 3/rpl 3/usermode browsers, slowing them down even more (known issue, stack a few FF addons up, & see for yourself))!
In fact, Proxomitron is 1 of the FEW tools like it that actually works WELL with custom hosts files that I know of!
HOWEVER: Proxomitron http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proxomitron bills itself as "the universal filter"... it's NOT AS UNIVERSAL AS CUSTOM HOSTS FILES ARE!
(Which again, are part of ANY OS' IP stack that's based on the BSD original & most all today, if not all, ARE based on it - even on smartphones, & does Proxomitron run on those? Not afaik... hosts, can & do (may have to run a DosToUnix utility over them IF you import them from Windows (ASCII vs. EBCIDIC & other issues are overcome that way), but that's about it for complexity of import/export)):

AdBlock = inferior to custom hosts
"Sadly, I have "real intelligence" when a large enough to be profitable portion of the words population don't" - by Omestes (471991) on Thursday February 14, @02:21AM (#42893107) Homepage
Sadly, you're wrong (per my subject-line above) since AdBlock doesn't block all ads anymore, by default (& can't do 10++ things custom hosts files can, listed below) - same goes for Ghostery & even DNS servers!
Additionally: I hate doing this too, but it's "doesn't" in that case per your quoted words above, not "don't" in that turn of a phrase (grammar picking yes, sorry - ordinarily I don't do that, as it is off-topic, but it fits here!).

NoScript rocks (AdBlock no longer does & why)
"Ads can go to hell. I've had enough malware served up that I don't give a rat's ass about "ad revenue"." - by Anonymous Coward on Wednesday February 13, @09:10PM (#42891241)
Per my subject above: NoScript's FF's BEST addon, bar-none, but Adblock "just ain't what it used to be" (proofs below)!
Plus, "oddly enough" (lol, "not"), the advertisers + webmasters OMIT 1 VERY IMPORTANT FACT:
Fact being they not only INFECT you via adbanners (numerous examples below from reputable sources cited in that regard) BUT they also ROB YOU of your bandwidth/speed you PAID FOR MONTHLY TO YOUR ISP for online access! To the tune of 40% of the "weight" of every site online that displays ad banners no less on average!!!
I decided to do something about it, and you can too, should you elect to try this application I designed (works with a native tightly integrated feature of the IP stack itself in the hosts file @ ring 0/rpl 0/kernelmode via tcpip.sys, a driver, fast as it gets & right off the bat, making adblock REDUNDANT actually, since browsers & addons CANNOT operate without knowing where to go, first, & hosts load @ OS startup once the IP stack loads (@ bootup & fully on 1st request to the internet, in Windows &/or MacOS X)):

I like Word Ruggle on Android. It's like Boggle but playing with a bunch of other people at the same time, with each player's scores being ranked and displayed between the 2-3 minute rounds.

P.S.=> Anyhow/anyways - Bottom-Line: Any OS out there has 'security issues' or just weak initial setup (even Linux via SeLinux in its defaults as well as MacOS X too, guides & tools exist for both to make them better though)!
However as well, on the 'flipside': Any of them can be "security-hardened" & quite easily in minutes (IF You do it as I do in those guides, + I sped that process up (CIS Tool) for Windows 7 here, vs. how I used to do it for 2000/XP/Server 2003, by saving the necessary 'tweaks' into
.reg &/or .inf files for instant merges after install (which I keep my system OFFLINE during it until that's done))...... apk

Kopimism doesn't erase infringement
It has been pointed out that due to the Pirate Bay page being under Kopimism, there is no infringement. This turns out not to be quite true.
Ville Oksanen, cofounder of EFFI (the Finnish version of EFF) and a lawyer specializing in technology and media law, comments as follows: "In Finland you cannot give up your moral rights and Matti Nikki's parody-judgement was based specifically on violaiton of moral rights. I think that TPB just issues a sarcastic reaction but technically TTVK ry is indeed likely to break law here."
Moral rights can come into play when material is used in opposition to the moral standards of the original authors. Parody is not at all protected under the strict reading of the law, though in practice there is some (yet weak) protection under a supreme court ruling.
So yeah, there is every reason, even with a recent similar case with a guilty verdict, to think that the Finnish version of copyright law was indeed broken by the good antipiracy folks. At the very least they're operating on extremely gray area, which is not very flattering for their ilk either.

proven fact? methinks you (and the people that mod-ed you up) don't understand the scientific method.
You postulate a hypothesis based on observation (or pure thought).
FTFY.
Not that I disagree with your premise, but when it comes to definitions, there is a distinct difference between a hypothesis and a scientific theory.

You can certainly install the Java for Chrome on Macintosh, but you are limited to Java 6 as the most recent. Google provides a link to the instructions on how to do this.

Re:The next step is WiFi calling
Home wifi does not have QoS. Jitter is going to be terrible. If you are going to do this you want much more sophisticated software helping the whole thing end to end. Which is essentially what commercial SIP solutions do. Why reinvented SIP?
Actually, home wifi works great for voice. Jitter issues not withstanding.
The built in TALK app in Android can open a voice (or video) chat with any other Android user, and the quality is more than acceptable.
True, Sip is better. Using the built in SIP (Internet calling) feature of just about any Android phone (or any of a dozen such apps on the Play store) you can make calls to any other SIP phone. Calls to Land lines usually requires a sip to POTS gateway subscription somewhere. This is slightly harder to set up, because you have to know a thing or three about SIP to get it to work.
Or simply install GrooVe IP and you can use your Free Google Voice account to make and receive calls from your cell phone, as long as you have wifi. Calls are free anywhere in north America. This app emulates the Google Chat client found in Gmail and as a stand alone app on windows, to allow calls in and out over wifi (or 3g). Voice quality is exceptional.
(For 38 bucks you can also use Google Voice with your home phones. For most people this pays for itself in the first month).

Re:Apps
Agreed. The "not enough apps" conversation/excuse is a dumb one. 95% of the apps people are installing never get used. They just sit there for epeen measuring and "just in case I need it". If you disagree I dare you to actually count the number of apps you use in a day.
This is so; so horribly wrong. 99.9% of the time I don't care about having an up to date Stuttgart travel planner app in Android. It's the one time that I need it; that I'm late for my plane; that I can't get a taxi. That one time I manage to get my flight because my Android phone knows how to do it for me can be worth more than the entire phone and all the software on it. The magic app which saves you can be a simple ruler application which lets you call for the right screw to fix your car. It can be a medical app which tells you how to resuscitate your kid. Not everybody needs every app, but nobody knows exactly which app it is that they will need.
In any case, what's wrong with Windows Phone is not so much the lack of apps; that's a problem, but one you can plan around by having an Android or iOS tablet as well. It's more that, most of the apps were just brought in as the initial version required to get Microsoft's developer bounty and abandoned. With the lack of users everything is untested and there is no incentive for developers to update them after that first upload. The store is now even more dated than they were before WP8 launched. This means that you launch an app, hope it will work and find it doesn't actually do what you need. A bad tool may well be worse than no tool and no self respecting person should be caught out with one.

Re:Uh.. bandwidth?
On the bright side, home servers don't draw a lot of power depending on the hardware. My entire rack draws about 1250W under normal load.
I consider that a huge amount of power. The base draw for my home (like now, when it's empty) is about 40W; less if I bother to unplug laptop chargers and a few other things (which I don't).
What do you need such a powerful server for, at home?
I'm part-way through migrating my server from an old (1.4GHz Athlon) desktop to an embedded ARM system, to reduce the power usage. At (100W * 1 year) * £0.14GBP/kWh (£120), it makes sense to buy something efficient.
I have a Raspberry Pi (for something else), which draws so little power my watt-meter (measuring the whole house's consumption) isn't accurate enough to measure it. It's almost good enough to be a web, file and SSH server, but doesn't have enough RAM. I'm going to buy something similar, but with at least 1GiB of RAM and a SATA port.
(The server isn't at my house, so isn't included in that 40W. It's at my mum's house, to provide off-site backups for both of us. Her base draw is about 300W, as she refuses to replace an old freezer and blames about 280W of that on the server.)

Solving bugs
Why is it that a bug accepted in 2010, and which received a lot of comments from others with the same problem, is still not acted upon? Is it lack of resources?
Disclaimer: I filled this bug report.

Re:I'm actually quite impressed with the DPRK...
I assume that you mean "we" in the sense of the US, which isn't going to do anything because it's essentially bankrupt, devoid of EU/NATO allies and "super scared" of China. The US is just going to verbally condemn the DPRK's actions. Unless you mean "we" in a different context, in which, I don't see China doing anything, Japan is too busy with China, Russia couldn't care less and the EU never does anything. What I am missing in your "hollow threat?"
The US is essentially bankrupt, huh? Have you ever seen the GDP of the united states compared with...say, all of Europe combined? All of Asia combined (might as well compare it to just China). No? Ok, here.
Don't get me wrong, China is doing exceedingly well, and is well on their way to surpassing the US in GDP in a decade or so. I don't have a problem with that. But you need to understand the united states is far from bankrupt. We have some piling debt, which honestly, once it gets bad enough that we're really forced to cut expenditures, is going to not be an issue anymore.

Re:SI vs. Nerdissles
It was a separate context where 1024 and 1048576 and 1073741824 and 1099511627776 made sense.
Kind of like in a separate context where 12 and 36 and 5280 make sense? What's the point in having standard and compatible units/prefixes if we allow every domain to redefine them? If I have a wire with a 1 kilovolt potential across it and 1 kiloamp of current is passing through, then it is carrying 1 megawatt of power, and it has 1 ohm of resistance. If the wire is 1cm long then it has a resistivity of 100 ohms/meter. If I used it to power a water pump it could pump 102 metric tons of water up a 1 meter distance per second.
Now imagine how that would look if the union of electricians and the union of surveyors couldn't agree to just use SI prefixes? The only constant in that entire conversion if the acceleration due to gravity - it would be a mess if time, length, power, and energy all used different unit conventions.
