Re:What's In a Name?
You're right. We should all stop trying to remember domain names and just search for the sites we're looking for.
-
Re:Maybe a software solution?
"Google" is itself a misspelling - so should all requests for Google go to Googol?
Another example - "slashdot" is not a real word - so should Slashdot.org go to Slashers.org?
:) -
Re:first one up:
Even better, they should correct it to the "proper" spelling and send people to googol.com...

Re:A few points to the EU powermongers...
Actually they wanted googol.com but that was already taken (and they misspelt it anyway)

Re:I dont think thats true
LIARS!
Go to http://googol.com/.
That guy made it in 1995, they probably couldnt buy it and spelled the less creative 'google'. -
Re:A ?good ruling, me thinks not.
Does this mean google.com's ipo might be undermined by a zero hour lawsuit from http://www.googol.com/ ? For how long must i rent a name from netsol before i actualy have any rights to it? Have we establised any statute of limitations for this government sactioned theft? More practicaly what if Senator Rick Santorum has a child/pet/other entity entitled to use of his surname, calles it `Spreading` can he then take http://spreadingsantorum.com/ from its rightful owners. Think of the loss to the english language. Any number of domain names might resemble a name for something else. I hope my IP address does not offend anyone. i dont want the courts stealing that too.

Re:I Disagree
You have to consider also, that Google is a different word than googol. It's unlikely that anyone searching for information on one would inadvertently stumble upon the other.
Not really. The very first time I ever heard of Google was from a link at the top of Yahoo's main page that said Powered by Google. For several days I couldn't figure out why, whenever I typed www.googol.com I would get a math page, but whenever I followed the link from Yahoo I would get the search engine. It's very easy to confuse two things that sound the same. (Just read the spelling on many Slashdot posts...) -
http://googol.com/
this guy is in serious trouble!!!!

Re:Baaahhh....
What really kills me is that Google has acknowledged that their name is a play on the word "googol" since they first appeared. I guess the interested parties never did a google search for Googol (which actually brings up a link for http://www.googol.com...not suing *them*, are they?), or looked at the company's history page.

Re:That's nice, but...
"to google" is a much nicer verb than "to MSN".
Actually, both are very accurate!
"I Googled some results for you" implies that you found some results from a large number (a googol) of sites.
"I MiSiN'd but I couldn't find anything" correctly implies that you had no luck at all, as all the good sites were "missin'" from the index.
Never underestimate the M$ marketroids! -
Re:I don't know about your eyes
Hah, if it's less than a googol it's not a number!
Oh, the temptation to write "google" instead... -
Re:MOD PARENT DOWN -1 Overrated
Also, googol.com has been taken for a pretty long time. That might be a factor. I invented a binary googol. I call it Bigol. (Rhymes with Smeagol, although Bye-gol would make more sense.) It's 1 with 256 0's after it in binary, or 2^256, or about 1 with 77 zeroes after it in decimal. I figure Slashdot is as good a place as any to premier it on the world. ~User "Yes, I am the User number Googol" Googol~

Kill the typosquatters!
Hey, this could be a great way to get back at the typosquatters. With the viewership of slashdot being so large, if we all find these sites and post links to them and click them, we could potentially give them so much traffic that they'd go down and actually loose revenue.
With that, here's a few Google typosquatters:
http://www.hoogle.com/ - redirect to boogle.com; a beautified google.com
http://www.googol.com/ - some guy's personal site
http://www.gppgle.com/ - google.com with register.com ad at bottom
There are lots more. So, post links, click links (repeatedly), and hopefully kill a typosquatter!
