I wrote a perl script to do this for me the last time I downloaded RedHat:

I dont buy it.
Same thing is true at Harvard. Enrollment in CS has gone up from 101 students in 1993, to 173 in 1996 (years I have data for, and well over 200 by now.)
They've built a new building (funded by Gates and Ballmer, but called the Maxwell Dworking building (aka the MaxDork)) They're trying to double the size of the faculty now as well.
I (as an undergrad in CS) see a degree in CS as very important. The theoretical background is very helpful, if you are fully versed in the concepts on which all this technology is built, then learning programing language X on API Y is not difficult.
But there is a lot to be said for going to college to learn what interests you, and not what will get you a job. I'm in CS cause I like it, first and foremost, that it's a hot field with good employment oppurtunities is just a bonus.
Just my opinion...

Read all of Lessig's articles!
Lawrence Lessig is the Berkman Professor for Entrepreneurial Legal Studies at Harvard Law School. I first found out about him while exploring the Berkman Center for Internet and Society web site after seeing the posting about the H20 project. Since then, I have been reading everything that Lawrence Lessig has written.
You can check out some of the stuff he has written by 1st going to Lessig web site. I especially recommend the various articles that he has written for the Industry Standard. I truly believe that you will enjoy reading his well thought out essays.
IMHO, Lessig is the type of advocate that the OSS movement has underutilized. -

Here's a link that has a cute orbital simulation, copies of the paper, and where to find Ups Andromidae in the sky. Much more info for the interested.

Important part == Resonant Returns theory
The important part of Milani's paper was his theory of resonant returns. AN10 is a good example to test the theory, but the current estimated probability of impact with Earth in 2027 or 2039 is very low 10e-9. The point is asteroids can get locked into close approaching orbits to Earth.

Read Lessig's Lecture
The relationship and similarity between "Open Source" on the web and OSS was studied by Lawrence Lessig of the Berkman Center of Internet and Society (Harvard Law School). One can download a pdf file of his lecture (Open Code and Open Society: Values of Internet Governance) from Lessig's web site. I would also suggest that ppl read some of the other things that Lessig has written.
In this lecture, Lessig talks about the growth of Linux and of the WWW. He makes some comments about HTML and HTTP being "Open Source" as one can view the code of someone else's web page. This, he explains, helped the early expansion of the WWW. I'm probably not doing Lessig any justice by trying to summarize his lecture, so I strongly suggest that you read it.
Why is this of interest to the Linux community? If you remember, /. posted an article this past week about "Open Code" and the H20 project. These projects are Berkman Center initiatives and Lessig is the Berkman Prof. for Entrepreneurial Legal Studies. -
Another Important Item to Comment OnHey folks, if you want to see where things might go, check out Prof. Froomkin's comments. They are rather dense and very long, but if you want to know where the battle lines are drawn, check it out.
Its also important to realize that this is a "recommendation" to be handed to ICANN.
ICANN has commissioned a report from the Berkman Center for Internet and Society (at Harvard) on representation in cyberspace. There are various ways to comment --- its important that everyone at least takes a look!

sonny bonopoor bastard hasn't seen the Sonny Bono Copyright Term Extension Act of 1997 which effectively extends copyrights to 95 yrs. just think, it'll be 2086 or so before you could even use MS-DOS 6.22 for free. such bullshit... personally, i think books and software should be treated differently; but then again, i haven't thought in depth about it so don't flame me about it.

> Would like to know what project your talking about (maybe AXAF?)!
What's AXAF?
:-) See the satellite formerly known as AXAF. -
It is common practice, but not acceptable
In fact I've read a couple of academic papers on this very topic. Here is one dealing with the decision making process for creative bookkeeping. And I'll have to bug Prof. Zeckhauser to get his recent publication on "Earnings Manipulation to Exceed Thresholds" on-line. It's a refreshing piece of data from real companies on earnings manipulations to meet the bright lines of Wall St. earnings expectations and earnings manipulations for private companies just prior to IPO.
And don't expect an external accounting firm to find discrepancies during an audit. They aren't hired to work that way. If BCCI (the Bank of Crooks and Criminals International) could undergo audits from one of the Big 5 and come out clean until a post-mortem, I'm sure that Microsoft could as well.
