Unvanquished is a successor to Tremulous a free, open source game that was originally a quake 3 mod (but has been its own standalone game for quite some time). It is an asymmetric FPS, aliens vs humans that has some similarities to Natural Selection, but has been around much longer and is much better balanced.

Tribes Ascend is a good free-to-play FPS based upon the original Tribes series. Jetpack skiing with explosive discs is fun.

Dwarf fortress is a surprisingly detailed simulation game about dwarves, who build fortresses. So yeah. Losing is fun.

EVE Online is an MMO that is unique in having an impressively detailed economy, and largely lives and breathes by player-directed drama. It also boasts some rather good parody songs like this one.

you had better be really fucking good at gauging speed and distance because you will need to account for a large amount of drop and lead the thing.

Tribes Ascend is F2P. It's a reboot of the Tribes series after they bought the rights. Its not perfect, it has its issues, but it changed my mind about the F2P model.

I agree, and $500? wow. It is nice to run games at a decent frame rate, unfortunately for Radeon users their driver support seems to be falling behind their hardware by quite a lot. My Nvidia 560ti runs my favorite game Tribes Ascend with full bling, while Radeon users of higher end cards report all sorts of issues.

Firstly, take Tribes 2. Take as many of the original team as possible, and make them replay their game. Then, add to that. Improve the netcode and get 64x64 players running smoothly as a minimum. Play with some of the community-made enhancements and mods, perhaps integrate them. Thirdly, more maps. Larger maps, open and with a great many routes. Fourth, include a well-optimized in-game VoIP system. Finally, upgrade the graphics. This is the LEAST important part, but it'd be nice.

Create this game for the PC and then port it to consoles if it will work well, and congratulations. You've just made the best FPS ever.

I'm not sure if you knew, but the group, hi rez studios, that did Global Agenda got the rights to Tribes and they are planning on making a new version of Tribes.

The Tribes franchise was purchased by HiRez Studios. Their current game is Global Agenda, an fps/mmo hybrid, focusing on smaller squad based team combat. Their first Tribes title will be Tribes Universe.
