Re:marketing vs R&D
You communicate?! Are you accepting new patients? I'm tired of doctors throwing pills at me.
:-)
Here's an excerpt from a rant I wrote on this subject back in Sep. 2003:
There are more phobias and illnesses being marketed to than I care to comment on. I don't begrudge the guy who married a cat-owner his allergy medications. He can't help it if his windpipe constricts whenever Mr. Fluffy is in the room. But from my own experience with modern medicine, I know damn well that doctors are more than willing to provide you with samples of the latest miracle pill if for no other reason than to get you the hell out of the office so they can squeeze in one more patient on their billing cycle. People who don't want to be bothered with changing their lifestyles to benefit their health can now pop a pill and wave their prescriptions around like a Get Out of Jail Free card. -
Re:Americans scared?
I think it was 'round about the time when they started making kids wear helmets to play in the park. http://holophrastic.com/javascopes/october_02.php
Safety is out of hand; if we let stupid people continue to live and breed then we get the future we deserve. -
Amen to that.
Excerpt from my latest column:
"Our president wants to "spread democracy" around at the point of a sword, because America doesn't feel safe in a world where there are people who look, think, act, govern and worship in ways other than what we believe to be right. For if we tolerate other ways, that might mean that other ways are right, and we are therefore wrong." -
Think of the children - bleh!
I agree completely. So much so that I published a rant on the subject - Aug. 8 is National KidsDay

Amen, my fellow TRUE patriot.
I love the America that you represent. Currently we are a minority in our own country. I hope the pendulum does swing back soon, because moving to europe is gonna be a pain.

options
You know, I've often wanted that option on our message board myself. (Hey, dethro! How hard would it be to add this option in for the redesign?) A lot of our boards require that you be logged in to post, but anybody can read them. I can understand wanting to keep out the random troll, but once in a while I wish I could reply to someone without having to explain myself or start a war...not that I don't want to accept responsibility for what I say, but sometimes it helps to be anonymous. People are often more likely to listen to the opinion of an 'unbiased stranger' rather than the same advice from someone they know. Strange but true.
-
Interesting idea.
It took me a lot of headaches and arguments with my publisher during our last 'zine to learn to play nice with StarOffice, but now I really like it. I wouldn't say it was 'big and bloated' though...even in the depths of my ignorance I was very glad there was no animated paper clip trying to help me.

She never rode Kurt's coattails...
I still have an old issue of Sassy magazine with the two of them on the cover, before they were married. I remember thinking 'who is this chick'? It soon became apparent that she was the stronger one. Kurt was tortured and couldn't hang. (Great artist, don't get me wrong.) Courtney's been through some deep doo, and at times I really disliked her, but after reading this speech I am jazzed about the future of music again.
So who wants to start a good 'Net recording company? :-) (How about OgFOMK Arts?)

I have.
If you look around the mp3 page, you'll find: holophrastic.com and the band page, both of which give excellent access to all the band members. (Message boards, webcam, etc.)
As for making a living at it, sure, why not. But I don't bank on that, so I have a day job. The music is about the music, not about money.

Standardized Education
Like I always say, society has gone downhill lately.
I agree.
We need get back to the good old fashioned values.
I disagree.
[Old-fashioned values] [l]ike killing Christians.
Being a pacifist, I prefer this idea. [And, no, I didn't write it.]
Perhaps thats what all those conservatives meant.
...
Yeah, forcing all the kids in that public school sure will stop shootings. If I were forced to chant bullshit in a supposed "place of learning" I would be ready to kill too.
Entirely agreed, provided that there was implied sarcasm in what you said. Standardized education should not exist. It works for most people. Great. It's hell for the rest. Great. That just helps us (at least, it helped me) realize what's really so wrong about it.
First of all, in the American education system, a lot of time is wasted with incessant repetition intended at metaphorically pummeling the ignorant with facts until they hit home -- and then CONTINUING to pummel the now-enlightened with those SAME facts until those facts become "practiced"/"comfortable". Sure, most people can learn things that way -- provided they don't borrow each other's homework and copy the answers without ever going over the material. Oh. What's that you say? Lots of American students just borrow each other's homework and copy the answers without ever going over the material? I guess they must not like standardized education, either. More power to 'em.
Second of all, in the American education system, a lot of time is wasted with pummeling the "ignorant" with a government-regulated selection of facts. An individual should have the right to learn whatever he/she wants to learn (or, in the words of Pink Floyd, "We don't need no education. We don't need no thought control."). Instead, the government makes it a legal requirement that you go listen to what the government wants you to hear. Hmmm. Un-Constitutional right there?
Granted, if there weren't a sort of standardized education, a lot of what goes on in today's society would never be able to go on. But who says today's society is the best possible society humans could have? Who says today's society is any better than past societies? Who says everything we do as a civilization doesn't go to waste once everyone who cared about any particular undertaking dies off (even if that takes until when robots take over, when the sun blows up, when the universe collapses, when the polar icecaps melt and flood the land, when the sky falls, when the Dreamer awakens, or whenEVER)? Civilization can change. Civilization SHOULD change, and it should CONTINUE to change. Change is good.
So, I suggest a change: merely that going through an education system should become OPTIONAL -- done only for personal growth -- and have no effect on, say, salary. Salary should be based on effective use of ability and effective use of creativity and not on droneness/willingness to work with the system in the way the people who run the system want it to be worked with/mental prostitution or even on PAST RECORD of productivity, cooperation, or ANYTHING, for that matter. Besides, if some arbitrary future-person doesn't know who won the Civil War a thousand years ago, well, shit, I guess he wasn't interested in the Civil War, and, well, shit, I guess that means he won't go into a career as a Civil War expert, and he'll actually have to find a career that has something to do with something he's actually interested in. Damn.
Anonymous only to avoid criticism for feeding a troll (criticism with which which I normally agree, but this troll has potential). -
But that's not the whole picture!
You guys are only reading the horoscope as relates to your sun sign (meaning, the sign the sun was in at the time of your birth - for those of you on the fringes, you can have your chart done to figure it out once and for all). The other planets and the moon, and the signs they were in, as well as the houses, the aspects, ad infinitum, all contribute to your personal horoscope.
Astrology isn't about predicting events, it's about going with the flow of energy, living in tune with the motions of the heavens, and seeking out the patterns in your life. Sounds like New Age hippie talk to most of you, I imagine, but like any religion or form of divination, you have to have a little blind faith. A real astrologer works mathematical equations and ponders the mysteries of life...those psychic hotlines give astrology a bad rap.
Here are some other useful links, ranging from the informative to the silly.

There are too many 'nuclear families' who VOTE and BITCH enough with their damn churches behind them for us to convince the big companies not to play along with this.
And of course, why would NBC or Nike or whoever want to oppose something that was meant to 'protect the children'? It would be suicide.
I can only pray the underground hackers and crackers can f**k it up somehow. :-)
