Tiered pricing, and QoS
Whoa. There's a little ire in the above posts - obviously this isn't a popular thing.
I personally think this could be implemented in a manner that is "fair" to everyone involved. What I'd like to see is a tiered setup similar to that of the IgLou ISP: their DSL customers pay for a fixed amount (say 10 GB) of "high-priority" traffic, and the rest is de-prioritized to "bulk." Thus, a DSL subscription is truly "all-you-can-eat", but users with greater needs are encouraged to pay for what they're using.
I think this kind of scheme could work great if paired with a QoS setup on the end-user's part. What if I could prioritize my own traffic? (Not something I think IgLou lets its residential DSL customers do.) Then, you could de-prioritize P2P traffic and super-prioritize VoIP or shell traffic (maybe "pay" double?) -- everything runs more smoothly. The casual users' web-browsing speeds stay high, and the power users have an incentive to mark bulk traffic for what it is.

Re:Here is a challenge to BellSouth customers...
Nice thought. Unfortunately, BellSucks -- er, BellSouth is the only telecarrier available here. Sure, I could switch to the cable company (and I'm considering it after this crap), but that would mean leaving my local ISP like.
That leaves me with the following options:
1) Really good ISP that goes through really bad BellSouth
2) Bad cable company.Of course, if I hadn't just signed a 2 year sat TV contract, I'd be tempted to switch everything to cable, but that won't happen for a while now.

Re:Great macro camera?Here's a couple I've taken with a Nikon Coolpix 950.
This is one of the tiny snails that appear on my sidewalk after it rains. I was using the silver dollar as a platform.

This is a very small flower I snapped in Dana Meadows which is just before you leave Yosemite National Park through the Tioga Pass gate. (I didn't know the small beetle on the left was there til I saw the picture.)

419eater.com's birthday is in September
The website will celebrate two years of baiting scammers this September. No word if there will be a contest this year, as there was last year (plugging my prize-winning contest entry there), as Shiver is running a Christmas contest (and already has killer entries).
If they're not, you can always get them to join a church or two. -

Paul Gadzikowski's cartoon on this subject...
Dailies from 2/3/05
The above's a nice cartoon with Captain Archer on the left talking to the new 9th Doctor (from the new Dr Who series by the BBC). The sixth episode of the new series featuring the Daleks was broadcast in the UK yesterday.
Here's my transcript from the cartoon:
Archer: ENTERPRISE is canceled as of its season finale in May.
Doctor: I heard. It's interesting DOCTOR WHO was canceled about the time when the NEXT GENERATION came on.
Doctor: Now WHO is going to be back again and TREK is going to be gone again.
(Silence)
Archer: This is all your fault.
Doctor: Oh please. Cancellation after a season on Friday night is historically the best thing that can happen to a STAR TREK.

There was another webcomic I wanted to list here, but I lost the URL. It was about two guys who receive a package which contains a sword that allows them to travel to parallel universes, then they meet 2 girls which are alternate versions of themselves, also two bad duplicates of themselves from other realities. It's got lots of twists.
If anyone knows the URL please post it. Most pages were in black and white with some occasionally in colour. I think it was on keenspace but I can't find it.

Shameless Self-Promotion
September 18 was 419eater.com's first birthday, and it's the site where I learned about scambaiting.
The webmaster, "Shiver Metimbers" (obviously not his real name), held a contest in honor of the event. The goal was to get a scammer to hold up a sign reading "HAPPY BIRTHDAY 419EATER" -- and since a number of scammers already knew what the website was (and since 419 itself might cause the "smarter" scammers to twig anyway), it was something of a challenge. The successful baiter would win the contest. If multiple victories were secured before September 18, the readers of the 419eater.com forum would vote on the best picture.
I rose to the challenge. Though it took me until the last minute to secure an entry, I did finally have a worthy submission. I find it interesting that jonbarry, whose "nude gender-undetermined mugu" picture ended up taking second place, actually encouraged people to consider voting for me instead.
I don't attribute the end result to skill, just luck in finding the right scammer dumb enough to fall for it. You can read the email exchange that led to the pictures and see the pictures themselves at my Birthday Bait page.
I've yet to update it with the final details, though I can report that I was unable to secure any nice new pictures from the lad. I got a little overeager (I figured that I had nothing to lose by asking for a nude group shot, but no dice).
As for the other entries...well, when the 419eater.com forum comes back up, search the Pictures forum for "Birthday" in the subject line. You should come up with a locked topic that has the entries and the final vote totals. -
Nigerian scammers have no shame...
I know of two Nigerian scammers who are willing to defraud a church of over $20,000. How do I know this? Because I claim to be a pastor of the church with the means to give them church funds. They are so greedy that they were willing to be baptized in the name of our Church. I even got them to sign the church membership agreement.
Now if I can just get a tithe from them... -

Reply to your business proposal.
Dear Dr. Bokuzuwandi,
Your prosal intrigues me, as I am always seeking to expand my business to new countries whenever possible. You must understand, however, that I cannot simply blindly enter into deals with people who I have never met. As such, I will require a sign of TRUST from you, in the form of photograph identification. Please understand that I will not be able to accept normal government ID cards or an international passport for this endeavour, as such things are easily forged. Instead,I shall give to you a password phrase, and you must have a photograph of yourself holding up a large and clear sign that displays this password phrase. Scan this photograph in and email it to me as an attachment. When I have received it, I will be 100% ready to trust you with your business proposal.
I do apologize, but until I receive this form of identification from you, I will not be able to provide you with any further information about myself.
The password phrase is "I LOVE ARSE FORKING"
Yours Very Truly,
Pastor Phil McCracken
(Hey, it worked before!)
Now if only I could find a way to similarly humiliate the spammers who advertise pirated software or penis pills... -

Re:Should I have the Dark side wine with my fish?
A quick Google says that it depends on the fish... generally sticking with Light wines is traditional, but some fish are met with fuller power with the Dark Side of the Wine.

Just for reference
Here is a pic taken from Pier 39 in San Francisco that shows the bridge and the area the other two pics were taken from. This was taken in mid September when the days tend to be warm and the nights cool here in the Bay Area.

This is the viewI was just up there last Sunday. It was a little hazy but the view was still spectacular.
This is the view toward the city. Alcatraz is on the left side of the picture in the middle of the bay. They have an interesting tour there.
This is the view towards the ocean. The Pt. Reyes Lighthouse is at the end of the point of land. Some nice views down there, too.
Of course sometimes all you can see from up there is the top of the fog bank.

He's linking to the file as many times as is possible in order to get the point across that while the post he wrote says he discourages cracking MS DRM, he clearly is advocating that is ok to download the file.

Re:irresponsible
You have a good point about the suggestion to grab the DRM cracking utilities, though I disagree with your sentiments that violating MicroSoft's copyright is somehow justifiable. Microsoft's engineers worked hard to create an effective system for helping large corporations control their copyrights and here some anonymous hacker has broken all of their hard work and rendered the fruits of their money and efforts worthless, all in a single package that you can download here. Slashdotters, you should be ashamed that you are being encouraged to download this file and HeUnique should be ashamed for suggesting that people grab this file.
Cries of "fair use" do not render valid laws and copyrights obsolete. Just because DRM is easily circumvented is no excuse to ignore Microsoft's intellectual property. -

What to do with Trek
While I like Voyager (season 3 is being shown right now), a possible solution is to made a new series which takes the mickey out of itself, perhaps by imagining an 'amalgam' type of alternative universe and setting a new series in this. A possible amalgam could be found with Star Trek and Doctor Who. Yes, who cares that the rights are owned by two companies but we fans can dream, can't we. Both series had a planet called Vulcan
:)
Here are some urls which in some way are about a combination of both series:
TrekWho-L Mailing List -- check out William Donges' classic crossover fanfic between Star Trek and Doctor Who and more..
Paul Gadzihowski -- The Doctor (Who not the doc from Voyager!) meets up with Janeway, Kirk, Picard, Tuvok, Sisko, etc! lots of continuing fanfics on this theme (he even does a weekly comic strip). A quote from the latest update of this site: "The seventh Doctor leads Captain Picard to water, but won't make him drink." The quality is better than the actual show!
