Quotation explained.
"Confidence is high! Repeat! Confidence is high!"
This line is heard in War Games, but is also quoted in the rather curious Dark Side of the Moon (a 1990 film, not the Pink Floyd album).

Re:Forget London...
Over 40 blocks of high-speed cab? Reminds me of a scene from The In-Laws where Sheldon and Vince are in a speeding cab in New York:
Sheldon: Are we stopped?
Vince: Yes, we're stopped.
Sheldon: Did we hit the little boy on 6th Avenue?
Vince: No, we missed him by a good foot and a half. -
Re:CNN
The Death Knell of CNN came way back in 2001 when they hired that actress from Babylon 5 to be an anchor on Headline News. It just hasn't been the same since.

Fox "News" - Re:Three strikes and you're *out*...
Probably because Fox News is a news source that can and does report objective stories frequently, despite its editorial slant.
What the so-called "Fox News Channel" does, goes well beyond an "editorial slant." I know of no other news program, where the management sends memos to the reporters on how to present the news. Check out the documentary Outfoxed to get a glimpse on the practices in that organization.
In addition, there are blatant misrepresentations and outright lies spouted as fact on the various FNC programs. One example: Barbara Boxter made a statement accusing Bush (I think) of having "disdain for the truth." O'Reily didn't hear it right, and maintained that she had said "disdain for the troops." He shut down a caller on his show, who tried to correct him.
Now, anyone can make a mistake, or hear something incorrectly. However, normal people check facts, and then apologize, if they have made a mistake. I challenge you to find a place where O'Reily has apologized for his mistake.
So no, Fox's slant is not "unacceptable because it's right-leaning," it is unacceptable because it is aimed at destroying what the United States stand for. For those who think I am exagerating, think about this: without truth, there is no "American way of life." -
Re:So what happened?
I'd like to know Senator Durbin's stance on the rumor of a ryder being added to the appropreations bill regarding the mandate of the broadcast flag.
Which ryder were they trying to add? Winona is currently the most famous, but since this was a stealth tactic perhaps they'll try with a less well known ryder. Personally I'd look for them trying to attach a Wyn Ryder. There's something suspicious about that name.

Re:Article is not particularly insightful, really
Only if you invent a new meaning for "hacker" that stands for "a person who does something _harmful_ with some information/piece of software, when he shouldn't", then those "hackers" would be the cause for the need for security.
Only on Slashdot would someone claim that this is a "new" definition. Yes, somebody found an email from 1980 that predates the modern media usage of the term, but neither usage is new. I have no statistics of Slashdot readers, but I would suspect that at least half of them are "newer" than that term.
What is new is the Slashdot/Linux/OSS community's obsession with the term. You guys want the cool word for yourself. You desperately want to be thought of as a hacker: the oddball geek who's secretly interesting and powerful (for good, though). You want to invoke the stupid stereotype that you profess to dispise, otherwise there would be no reason to cling to the term.
In reality, we're all just a bunch of nerds who sit at a computer all day. The daily conquests that we attempt to take pride in -- fixing the router in record time, installing Linux on your Xbox -- seem so important to us, but don't really interest anyone else. Even the celebrity hackers like Linus or RMS aren't "real" hackers. What the rest of a the public regards as a real hacker doesn't exist. To them, a hacker is a magical creature that can get free money from an ATM, bypass any electronic key lock, and bring down the Pentagon with a phone call.
Until you can do all that, don't call yourself a hacker. You'll only end up embarassing yourself when people find out what you really do. -
Re:wrong actress...
GO to IMDB and look at the headshot they have on her page. Actually, hell, here:
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000207/
Tell me that isn't freaking perfect.
She does do the Wednesday Addams thing very well, sure, so she gets called on to do it a lot. And I can't pretend I'm some kind of Christina Ricci expert or anything, I've only seen at most five movies with her in them, but she isn't ALWAYS like that. -
Re:$740 a month for Shoalin training?!!
Shaolin Soccer (english title) is rather extremely goofy too. Not the sucking US cut, but the Hong Kong original is great. Characters bursting into song at random unexpected moments, Matrix style special effects, soccer, a stupid love story, in Hong Kong martial arts style. Classic.

Re:$740 a month for Shoalin training?!!Yeah it was Fight Club, but I'm pretty sure Palniuk (or Tyler Durden) got the idea from American Shoalin which wins the no. 2 spot for goofiest movie with Shoalin in the Title.
No. 1 spot incidently, goes to Shoalin Dolemite

Re:I agree...
Watch [Fahrenheit 911] and do you still think corruption went away?
Well, if you want to play duelling media, watch Chinatown or read Boss or The Jungle.
I agree that today's government is not perfect. But my point is that things have gotten better, and that it is within our power to make it better still. Which is not only why Michael Moore did make that movie, but also why he could make that movie. -
Re:I agree...
"Things can get better. Things do get better. Fifty years ago, government corruption was endemic."
And how exactly did renaming corruption into campaign contribution make things better?
Watch http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0361596/
and do you still think corruption went away? -
I blame the movie also
Yak Yak Yak - started it all. Find me some Gibsons!

Re:FTFA
#2 wasn't a movie, although several movies did come out of it. Here's a more complete list of series and movies in roughly chronological order (grouped by actor playing Batman):
Lewis Wilson: The Batman (1943 movie serial).
Robert Lowery: Batman and Robin (1949 movie serial).
Adam West: "Batman" (1966 series) and Batman: The Movie (1966)
.Jing Abalos: Batman Fights Dracula (1967).
Olan Soule: "The Batman/Superman Hour" (1968 series) and "The Adventures of Batman" (1969 series).
Michael Keaton: Batman (1989) and Batman Returns (1992).
Kevin Conroy: "Batman" (1992 series), Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (1993), "Batman: Gotham Knights" (1997 series), The New Batman Superman Adventures" (1997 series), Batman & Mr. Freeze: Sub-Zero (1998), The Batman/Superman Movie (1998), Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman (2003).
Val Kilmer: Batman Forever (1995).
George Clooney: Batman & Robin (1997).
Kevin Conroy and Will Friedle were in Batman Beyond: The Movie (1999), "Batman Beyond" (1999 series), Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker (2000).
Rino Romano: "The Batman" (2004 series).
Christian Bale: Batman Begins (2005).
And this doesn't even include Catwoman , "Justice League", "Super Friends", Batman: Dead End , etc. (Note that Batman Beyond: The Movie and The Batman/Superman Movie are actually episodes of their respective series.) However, most people do consider Batman Begins to be the fifth "modern" live-action Batman movie, although I personally consider it a separate series altogether from the previous films.

Re:Excellent
Quoting Robin Willams...
"And people say 'Jesus isn't Jewish'. Of course he is! 30 years old, single, living at home with his parents? Come on! Working on his father buisness, his mother though he was God's gift? He's Jewish! Give it up!"
That DVD was probably the funniest shit i've seen in recent years. -
Re:FTFA
That would be Batman's first appearance on the big screen. The Batman from 1943. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0035665/
-
Re:FTFA
Maybe he means Batman: Mask of the Phantasm?
Granted, it wasn't live-action, but it was a theatrical release, and it came out between Batman Returns and Batman Forever. It uses the Animated Series/Gotham Knights/Justice League continuity and was done by the TAS team.
Frankly, I consider it better than the other live-action films, with the possible exception of the 1989 Batman.
Just my $.02... -
Re:FTFA
There is even one more: The Batman (1943). Of course, at that time the villain could not be other than a "japanese spy".

Re:wrong actress...Christina Ricci, on the other hand, seems like she was born that way. Remember her as Wednesday Addams?
That movie was full of inspired casting. And lots of great lines, too.
Girl Scout: Is this made from real lemons?
Wednesday: Yes.
Girl Scout: I only like all-natural foods and beverages, organically grown, with no preservatives. Are you sure they're real lemons?
Pugsley: Yes.
Girl Scout: I'll tell you what. I'll buy a cup if you buy a box of my delicious Girl Scout cookies. Do we have a deal?
Wednesday: Are they made from real Girl Scouts?

Let's not forget the 1966 classic featuring Adam West and Burt Ward
