Re:watch Dr. Strangelove
I agree. I think we should base all our decisions on 50-year old fictional movies.
Ohhh, THEM!
Clearly, we should be irradiating as much wild life as possible. These giant mutant creatures would feed millions! -
Re:Minime
Michael Keaton already did this.

If you could clone yourselfwouldn't you re-engineer your genetic makeup to be better (stronger, smarter, more handsome)?
Wouldn't you want to be the best you can be (with your own genes) a la Gattaca?

Re:TSA, terrorism, gun control, and mass shootings
Me being oddly pedantic... The katana is the long sword, too long to commit seppuku easily. The wakizashi is the (usually) smaller, backup blade that can be used for seppuku (among other things).
Related - the movie Harakari is awesome. It was also recently remade.
Back to your original idea - there is no one thing. Arguing that "it's not X, look at country Somewhere-ia which also has X" doesn't solve that There are many things that fold in. The issue is easy access to guns AND a culture that tolerates violence AND (related to that) a culture that glorifies violence AND a weak social safety net that makes violence as a means to get money a real option for a subset of people AND a bad mental health program that either criminalizes mental health issues or forces them underground AND...
Well, I could add on a few more, but you get the picture. There is no one answer. This is a long hard slog. We have to push on many fronts. Saying "well, doing X won't solve the problem" is true. Because we have to do Y, Z,

Agreed (but not for tech reasons)
I agree that having some Spanish classes has helped me. As stated, it's the second most common language in the US. Plus, it's similar to other Romance languages, which makes it that much easier to understand those languages at least a little. I remember going to see Brotherhood of the Wolf, and simply knowing Spanish allowed me to get a basic idea of what they were saying in French. I was still glad to have the subtitles, but I didn't have to focus quite so much on reading them.
As a person in the Midwest, I think it would be helpful for you to know Spanish. As a software developer specifically, not so much.

Re:This is a distraction from the real issue.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0468569/quotes?qt0499831
You know what I've noticed? Nobody panics when things go "according to plan." Even if the plan is horrifying! If, tomorrow, I tell the press that, like, a gang banger will get shot, or a truckload of soldiers will be blown up, nobody panics, because it's all "part of the plan". But when I say that one little old mayor will die, well then everyone loses their minds!
That is the most important quote to understand all this security related BS. People don't give a crap about their rights and freedoms. They only care about order. And only once they have order will they start complaining about everything else. This is how dictatorships happen - people want order and don't care about giving up everything to have a perception there of.
As long as there is a perception of chaos and disorder, people will be happy to give up every right they said they cherish. And the craziest thing is - they don't even know they are giving it up.
My hope was that leadership of any "free nation" is rational, but that is not true. They are as irrational as the electorate.
The sad thing is that if we don't stop with this madness, all we'll end up doing is repeating the past cycles of free nation -> dictatorship -> war -> reset -> free nation. In today's world, we can't do this anymore.

Re:100 more will die today
Alright, Since sarcasm, satire, and hyperbole and irony all seem to be lost on you, I'll rephrase using the more common vernacular:
Whoosh.
I used the "dear leader" term to adopt satirically the voice of someone from the "wingnut echo chamber", which I then used to sarcastically disbelieve the OP's plea for sanity. I then hyperbolized the effect of our existing national security policies to illustrate ironically how useless they actually are, and how harmful such over-reactions can be, regardless of any political backing. Finally, the "three shells" comment was in humorous reference to Demolition Man, which depicts a perfectly safe society that is so risk-free it can't even function effectively in a time of minor crisis.
In truth, I think a moderate response is really what we should hope and work for, eventually aiming to relieve the conditions that make people want to commit such atrocities. However, all too often it seems our politicians (from all parties) see tragedy as a career-building opportunity, where they can exploit the public outrage to pass ever-stricter legislation that makes them look good while just wasting time, money, and lives.
There, I've explained the joke. It's somewhat ruined now, but at least the ACs can understand!

Office Space: The Mayan Edition
So crazy. This whole Mayan doomsday prophecy stuff all amounts to nothing more than an ancient form of the y2k bug.
I've often imagined getting together a crew to do a remake of Office Space , only where everyone would be wearing Mayan outfits, carrying chisels, and complaining about having to rework all these bloody great stone calendar wheels.
If I only had the time, and the budget...
:)Cheers,

great movie about this
There's a great movie about this, called "Seeking Friend for the End of the World". In the film, they only discover the asteroid is going to hit a few days before it happens.
The film was lovely (it's not an action flick, it's very thoughtful) but I thought the premise - discovering an imminent collision so late - was just a ridiculous plot device. Seems I was wrong! Great film now seems even a bit better.
:) Highly recommended! -

Re:Why not to fly it out of the solar system?
NASA is not showing much of a sense of humor here.
On a very personal note, I wish they'd fly it out of the solar system, in the hopes that it might eventually land on a planet somewhere after drifting through space for a few billion years.
Because, who knows... maybe a few bacteria currently contaminate the probe, survive the drift through space, and end up finding their new planet hospitable. Or more fun yet, it could land within the reach of pre-modern civilization somewhere.
These probes don't have enough fuel to get back to earth, let alone escape the sun's gravity well.

The American government forces our children to attend school, but nobody forces them to watch T.V. Americans of all ages *submit* to television. Television is the American ideal. Persuasion without coercion. Nobody makes us watch. Who could have predicted that a *free* people would voluntarily spend one fifth of their lives sitting in front of a *box* with pictures? Fifteen years sitting in prison is punishment. But 15 years sitting in front of a television set is entertainment. And the average American now spends more than one and a half years of his life just watching television commercials. Fifty minutes, every day of his life, watching commercials. Now, that's power."

When the public does not know what the government or the CIA is doing, it cannot voice its approval or disapproval of their actions. In fact, they can even lie to your about what they are doing or have done, and you will not know it. "The real reason for the official secrecy, in most instances, is not to keep the opposition (the CIA's euphemistic term for the enemy) from knowing what is going on; the enemy usually does know. The basic reason for governmental secrecy is to keep you, the American public, from knowing - for you, too, are considered the opposition, or enemy - so that you cannot interfere. When the public does not know what the government or the CIA is doing, it cannot voice its approval or disapproval of their actions. In fact, they can even lie to your about what they are doing or have done, and you will not know it. As for the second advantage, despite frequent suggestion that the CIA is a rogue elephant, the truth is that the agency functions at the direction of and in response to the office of the president. All of its major clandestine operations are carried out with the direct approval of or on direct orders from the White House. The CIA is a secret tool of the president - every president. And every president since Truman has lied to the American people in order to protect the agency. When lies have failed, it has been the duty of the CIA to take the blame for the president, thus protecting him. This is known in the business as "plausible denial." The CIA, functioning as a secret instrument of the U.S. government and the presidency, has long misused and abused history and continues to do so."

"The United States has it's own propaganda, but it's very effective because people don't realize that it's propaganda. And it's subtle, but it's actually a much stronger propaganda machine than the Nazis had but it's funded in a different way. With the Nazis it was funded by the government, but in the United States, it's funded by corporations and corporations they only want things to happen that will make people want to buy stuff. So whatever that is, then that is considered okay and good, but that doesn't necessarily mean it really serves people's thinking - it can stupify and make not very good things happen."

"It's only logical to assume that conspiracies are everywhere, because that's what people do. They conspire. If you can't get the message, get the man." - Mel Gibson (from an interview)

"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." - William Casey, CIA Director
##

George Carlin:
"The real owners are the big wealthy business interests that control things and make all the important decisions. Forget the politicians, they're an irrelevancy. The politicians are put there to give you the idea that you have freedom of choice. You don't. You have no choice. You have owners. They own you. They own everything. They own all the important land. They own and control the corporations. They've long since bought and paid for the Senate, the Congress, the statehous

Re:Most folks don't understand...
Best of luck changing things. Fines and arrests are frequently made for the processing of illegal lumber at small plants, the largest clearing houses are those owned by government officials, either as developers or loggers. The "people" are doing what they are told or at least paying for it. Those in charge escape all prosecution.
For more on this and other plights of our changing world,. check out Urbanization (yes it's on Netflix) -

That's another parody. The original was Treasure of the Sierra Madre.

If you're going to use a movie reference, at least understand which movie is being referred to.

Send in a Gatoroid. I'd say it's Syfylicious, but there aren't any WWE actors.

Re:Not a Former NFL Linebacker!
As best as I can tell it was 'Porky's' reference originally, and yes you are missing the joke. The replies are very 'tongue in cheek'.

That's true, but if he can hit that bullseye the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate!

The Light Bulb ConspiracyThe developer is promising cheap, hard-to-break, mercury-free, highly efficient bulbs
Historically the three problems with EL have been color balance (or total lack thereof), lifespan (maybe a year at full power), and surface brightness (like forget "lamps" you'll need to cover the entire ceiling with illuminated panels to get modest room illumination).
What the developer is promising has been off the shelf for at least 3 decades... What I listed is the really hard part.

Re:Islamic extremist values
This is +4 Insightful? I could buy plenty of movies with boobs showing at the supermarket. "R" rating includes pretty much everything except prolonged full frontal nudity and/or hardcore sex. In some cases, enough people get off that here in the United States wenominate it for an Oscar.
Heck, if boobage is all you're looking for, just turn on some cable TV. Don't act like you have to travel to the naughty side of town for that.
