Levitating Frog Real?
The Ig Nobel Prize honors individuals whose achievements "cannot or should not be reproduced." [from the site
Why *wouldn't* you want to levitate that frog again? I think that perhaps the most important method of spending our tax dollars very well may be levitating frogs and other amphibious creatures.
But I do want to check: the levitating frog is the real deal, right? I remember hearing about it at the time, and I still think it's pretty goddamned cool. The movie cracks me up. But before I go around telling people that I have a video clip of a floating frog, I figure I should check to make sure it's legit. :)

Magazine SubscriptionsAny problem can be solved by another layer of abstraction: Books are nice, but let's generalize that to reading.
I have piqued the curiosity of many a New Jersey Transit train rider by laughing out loud at the articles found within The Annals of Improbable Research, given to me a year ago by my mother. (There also exists the free mailing list mini-AIR.)
So let's generalize: We like to read, and, especially if we commute via public transportation for any time, a gift of light reading could prompt us to think fondly of the giver on a monthly basis.

Don't forget the Igs ...
The Ig Nobels are the prizes given by the Annals of Improbable Research for research that "cannot or should not be reproduced" You can't talk about the nobels without talking about the igs. The link is here

Tickets for the IgNobel AwardsIf you are interested, I suggest looking at the ticket information section of the IgNobel Awards page. From what I've heard from friends who have tickets, they may be gone by now. The ceremony is the 30th of September this year, although if you really want to see Troy, I suggest going to the talk he is giving tomorrow night at 7pm. Details are here. It is worth it, I think.
...and the awards are certainly worth seeing at least once. Occasionally juvinile humor, but it's good stuff.
As a side-note, they will also be live web-casting the presentation, although I sincerely hope it won't be slashdotted. I don't have tickets.

Re:This guy is an idiot, and he's been recognisedI was able to answer my own question.
You can find the info about tickets here. It has info about a free showing of a film about the bear suit at MIT tomorrow night (wednesday 9-22-99) and the ignoble award ceremony on the 30th at harvard. Plus some other related stuff.
See you all there.
