TWAIN defines a standard interface that imaging hardware vendors may choose to support. Anyone can talk to a TWAIN interface to control an imaging device. It has nothing to do with "how the photo app talks to the scanner app", whatever that means. The real problem with TWAIN is that it is quite vague in places and leaves a LOT to interpretation.

Thinking employers are itching to go back to those bad old days strikes me as paranoia. There's always another job waiting for you, and if you don't like the one you have, chances are there's another out there that more closely resembles what you think you deserve. If not, as I said before, time to reexamine your career options and expectations. Sounds to me like we must agree to disagree.

To be fair I know zero about IWW specifically. But when someone says "if you try to fuck us, we'll fuck you" (direct quote), that sounds like extortion to me. Threatening suppliers? Harassing customers? Threatening non-union workers who would voluntarily take your place without union protection? That is extortion. I admit I have no idea if IWW does this, but I've seen plenty of other unions do exactly these things.

Playing devil's advocate here, but the process of taking a CD, putting it in a CD-ROM drive, ripping it, then loading the files onto an iPod doesn't involve using an "audio recording device".

I did exactly this. The day Vista came out I went out and bought my first-ever Mac (24" iMac) due to not wanting an OS that wouldn't allow me to do as I wish with my own content (HD downscaling, for instance). Every time I see a story like this now I know I made the right choice. Yes, I still think Macs cost more, but for me at least it's worth it.
I bought a 24" iMac on the day Vista was released (seriously - typing this post on it now). My first OS X machine (although I use them at work), and so far I freakin' love it. And best of all, it doesn't try to tell me what I can and cannot do with media I purchased separately.
