Still alternativesUnfortunately, Hasbro will most likely come out on top because the Scrabble board layout itself is copyrighted and trademarked.
The lawsuit wouldn't be quite so egregious if Hasbro offered their own online Scrabble game which wasn't extortionately priced, offered the same level of interactivity and community, and didn't suck all manner of ass.
Will they unsheathe the "lost sales" gun too, I wonder? If anything, Scrabulous made me more interested in Scrabble than any number of adverts or publicity by Hasbro ever has. Let's all go play on the Internet Scrabble Club instead.

I've been playing Scrabble online for years at ISC
That's the "International Scrabble Club" at http://www.isc.ro/ Servers are run out of Romania to avoid the legal issues. It manages to attract many of the best Scrabble players in the world.

Games are boring nowadays
With the notable exception of the Wii, I haven't seen anything new and innovative for ages.
Then again, most of my gaming time is spent on GTA2 multiplayer, Scrabble and Internet Backgammon, so perhaps I'm just stuck in my ways. First person 3D graphics confuses the hell out of me anyway. -

ISC
I play Scrabble regularly over the web using the Internet Scrabble Club's Java client. I've used it under Windows, Linux, and Java. It's got some tics, but it's not bad. I wonder whether Hasbro will get on their ass about it as well.

Is ISC next?
What about Internet Scrabble Club? Are they safe because they're outside the US, licensed, or are they next?

Re:Well...
There is at least one other quality online Scrabble site that has been up since 1999 and seems to be a bit more under-the-radar. Probably since the operator didn't choose an intentionally provocative name like e-scrabble.
A quick googling of "play scrabble online" should bring up a number of other sources. -
Another great site / client
http://www.isc.ro/ is an alternative site. You can't play on the website itself but it has Java clients which you can download and then connect to the isc.ro server.
It's definitely reduced my sleeping hours! -
Re:Best Online Scrabble
Actually, there's a Java client for Mac OS X too, it's just (inexplicably) buried in the site at http://www.isc.ro/mac/

Best Online Scrabble
The best online scrabble can be found at Internet Scrabble Club. Usually several hundred or more players online at any given time from around the world. Multiple dictionaries from several languages and even a UK British dictionary. Very fun, playable from Linux and MacOSX via a Java applet (in the browser?), elsewise a quick download of a java applet for Windows. Many very highly rated national and international players are playing right now.
From the website:
The ISC is the best place on the Internet to play Scrabble in a relaxed friendly environment. You can compete at your own level in English, French, Romanian, Italian, or Dutch while meeting new people and making friends from around the world.
Right now there are 2138 players logged into the ISC and 792 games in progress.

Re:Adulthood calls...
Try the Internet Scrabble Club, its by far the best place to play Scrabble online.
It doesn't have silly rules or ads like the Yahoo/MSN clones, it has far less stupid kids because it requires a downloaded executable and some basic text commands, and its where all the pros play too, if you care to watch or play against scrabble pros.
