Re:take the contract
I would have agreed with you a few months ago. But since then, I've seen exactly this pre-pay-for-content model work with online comics in a couple place.
Example: In addition to free weekday Roomies or Shortpacked comics, David Willis charged $100 per weekly installment of It's Walky!, an online comic he ended a few months back. It had a natural spinoff story, which he was willing to tell in beautiful color on his weekends if readers made it his while.
A very different model has worked for Ralph E. Hayes Jr. of Tales of the Questor, Golbin Hollow and Nip and Tuck. He just announced that whatever comic earned him the most donations in a month would get extra TLC the next month.
If stupid schemes like this work for a GIF, it'll work for an MP3 or album of them. How much you can earn is a matter of debate, but you'll clearly get something.

Re:Equation constraints
You don't read It's Walky, do you?

It's Walky! Pumpkins
Since I carved two fairly rad pumpkins this year, I guess I'll throw out a link
:-)
Both are based on prints from http://itswalky.com/.

It's not a doppelganger...here's what really happened.

"Lucas' Neck Has Asserting Increasing Influence"
Personally, I've always been fond of "It's Walky's" interpretation of why Lucas movies has sucked more and more over time.

Great resource for online comic artists: Keenspot
Several years ago, some online comic artists banded together and formed Keenspot (and its sibling network Keenspace). Hosting, forums, artist control of whether pop-up ads (vs. only banner ads) appear for any given comic, optional subscriptions for ad-free reading; good stuff.
Among my favorites there: General Protection Fault, Help Desk, It's Walky (formerly Roomies), Lost and Found, Real Life, and Schlock Mercenary. -
I'm a bit miffed...
(Warning: This will look like a plug for a bunch of webcomics. It probably is, but I have a valid point. Mod me into oblivion of you wish.)
The big players in the print industry seem to be the only guys getting real attention when it comes to producing "comics" on the web.
What about the Keenspot or the Keenspace groups? They have a valid revenue model, even if they aren't making a ton of money(making money is a secondary concern to them). Heck, they're doing the opposite of the big boys: Moving from the 'net to print media. (Check for Roomies! and Superosity in your local comic store)
Another group is , which hosts, among other comics, Algernons Dilemma.
There are the big ones you've probably heard of, PvP and Sluggy Freelance who are actually making a living on their webcomic.
Heck, /. has Mega Tokyo banners!
Personally, I'd rather these, and others, than the majority of the junk the syndicates, et al, try to push onto the web. Nevermind X-Men, give me it's Walky!
Disclaimer: I run a webcomic, so this story pushed my buttons :)

Web comics and alien abduction
Anyone know why so many Web comics have alien abduction themes? I've seen it in Kevin and Kell, College Roomies From Hell, Cool Cat Studio, and maybe Alice. Roomies, now known as It's Walky!, is now entirely about aliens. What gives?

Re:Hemos on the brain and in the booth
I'm waiting for the Walkie/Slashdot poll crossover...
"I have perverse sexual lust for Hemos"
(The last option on It's Walky is "I have perverse sexual lust for...")
The last one was "Where do babies come from" and of course everyone voted "Perverse sexual lust"...
So Keenspot is out to make us into sexual perverts.. and Slashdot is building a personality cult around Hemos...
