Politics in software licensesAnonymous Coward wrote: Another reason is that putting any political agendas in software licenses is not leagally right
JGAA's anarchist political agenda is the central point of his WAR FTP Daemon software license. I wasn't aware there was a problem with his license. Can you elaborate?
GNU's license can also be interpreted as political support for communal ownership. Even the word "copyleft" has a connotation of political progressiveness. I'm sure others can give similar examples.

not all norwegians are that cool
I got quite a shock when I found out the story behind the author of the WARFTP software. Read here: http://www.jgaa.com/index.php?cmd=show_article&ar

This is news?
Sometimes I can't believe what makes the front page. Apparently it comes as a shock to Michael that groups of people who trust each other will provide software and other collections of bits to others on the group.
I remember people using war-ftpd to share so-called "warez" to each other, long before the average person had ever heard of Winamp.
How is it newsworthy that people do the same thing with music?
Ugh ugh ugh.
If this story is worth the front page, then this comment is worth reading.
Hint: neither is true. -
Warftp
Reminds me of that free FTP server Warftp. Obviously the author dislikes government agencies so much he released it under a license that allows everybody except governmental institutions to use his software.
So if someone doesn't like the US military, they can restrict the license of their software. -
Re:nfs for win32 [opensource, freeware, commerical
Anyone looking for the War NFS Daemon will notice that it was discontinued. You can still find the download here though http://download.jgaa.com/ftp/pub/products/Windows

Re:JOIN the EFF. It helps.
But trying to tell legislators "we know better than you" is immoral
DUDE! that's Taliban law, I think you've been watching too much CNN, you probably need to go to another civil war re-enactment.
... Look at what happened to ProhibitionThe people have the Right to refuse to comply with laws, otherwise Prohibiton would still be in effect. That's why jails are nice and comfortable - because nice people end up there too like Kevin Mitnick and the DeCSS guy.
Police even put gay people in prison just for being gay, WHY DO YOU THINK WARFTP WAS WRITTEN? Here's why. The rest of the gory details are buried elsewhere on his site.

Re:Clarification
Although, I'm almost tempted to pay a few bucks for a good FTP server capable of file ratios, bandwidth limits, and a built-in scheduler to disable/enable the server.
War ftp server. Windows 95/98/nt/2000, free, supports all the features you mentioned. -
More off-topic Y2K crapIt seems that jgaa's warFTP v1.70 server has a Y2K+1 day problem.
When I got a call from someone having trouble trying to get a file today (01-02-2000), I found that it would not display the files available for download. And even tho' I can upload to it, the files are not displayed after the upload completes.
Well, this did not make me a happy camper. I did some research, and lo' and behold, the files show that a new log was created on 01-01-00 and when it rolled to the next day it created a new file dated 12-31-69. The users that logged in were listed as having connected on 12-31-69.
So, it appears that warFTP refuses to display anything created after (what it thinks is) the current date.
I know that this will probably get hammered both for being off-topic and about a product for Windows NT, but what the heck, it seemed to fit in this thread.
