Earth: Final Conflict's "Global" Communicator
Earth Final Conflict Global
Exactly what I was thinking when reading:An electronic ink screen prototype, developed by Koninklijke Philips Electronics and startup E-Ink, is thin and flexible like paper so it can be worn wrapped around a cell phone. Users can unwrap it to view a map on a larger screen. Eventually, the display could be used to watch video.
And make the portable video phone a reality where camera phones have feared to tread. -

The Global Link
Like StarTrek's communicator presaged the flip phone, this , "Global Link", from the TV show "Earth Final Conflict" (terrible show yes) would really be an example of what we are after in a mobile device. The technology needed to make it happen is a high resolution OLED flexible display, so you can roll up the screen tightly. But nearly everything else is very doable with today's technology. Also, with better voice recognition with dictation it would make the interface much more appealing by limiting the need for a keyboard.

Re:Good for pre-shaped screens
That's the coolest phone ever. Here's a couple of small pictures:

My Google search turned up several companies working on similar concepts. Here's one: http://www.polymervision.com/ -

omg...Earth: Final Conflict, anyone?
Yet another case of companies ripping off scifi inventions. The only difference is the EFC ones were badged MCI. And of course, the Philips ones are functional.
:)That having been said, I can't wait to pick one up!

Re:iPhone
I want one too, but they won't have anything like that available for a few years. The roll up screen technology doesn't seem to be getting anywhere fast.

More scifi come to life
Oh... you mean like the idea seen in Earth: Final Conflict with the Global?
They used to scan those over an object all the time. Ever since that show first came out I've wanted one. :) -
Earth: Final Conflict Global Communicator?
Am I the only one who thinks this idea is ripe for science-fiction-turned-science-fact? Here's a picture of the darned thing if you never watched the series: Global

Earth Final Conflict: Phone
I don't why, but I kind of imagine the phone from Earth Final Conflict in my head when I read this. Take a little G3 technology, built in cameras and these roll up screens and I think we have everything we need to build a working version.

Re:pda/cell urks me...
all you end up with is a tiny PDA and a huge cell phone.
I'm personally waiting for the Taelons to invade so I can get a global link with it's large roll up screen.
