Re:Good, let's forget about chess...
Online Go has been around for a while. Check out the Internet Go Server for one. I recommend Cgoban as a client. apt-get or emerge should get it for you. If you don't know how to play, the The Interactive Way to Go is highly recommended as a tutorial.

IGS is also good
I prefer IGS server. Client is way worser than with KGS, but it easier to get to play in IGS. Also pros hang out in the IGS.

And Go too!Chess is OK, but I like Go so much better. And I love the IGS, Internet Go Server I often have watch a game playing on my desktop while I work.
Like chess, on-line go is often played against a clock. Of course. It is no less a turn based game.

The Game Of Go
Hi,
I suggest a very (very) old game coming from China, the Game of Go. Whereas chess is a battle (you have to kill the King), Go is a war (you have to conquer territory, battles are a mean, not a goal).
Like chess, Go is spacelly limited, but the number of possible games is incredibily huge (something around 10^600).
When a weak player meets a strong player, this one can have a handicap : this means the game won't be so easy for the strong one, and not so difficult for the weaker one : so everyone is happy to play.
Although rules are really simple, the game in itself can be very very complex : then the goal may not be to win, but to do a nice game, an elegant game.
For more informations, have a look at :
The Internet Go Server, to play online ;
this page to have a nice introducton.
Final word : Go is around 3500 years old. -
Internet Go Servers
I agree. Go is far more interesting than chess. To me, chess is just one big tree search problem. Go is far more beautiful than that.
There are two main online Go servers:
IGS http://igs.joyjoy.net/
NNGS http://nngs.cosmic.org/
The best way to use these servers is with a client program. There are several clients available which run under Linux. My favorite is CGoban. kgo is also quite good. -

Chess is for pansies...
Real geeks play Go! Seriously, if you're into board games at all, you should give Go a chance. There's a burgeoning online community that includes a newsgroup (rec.games.go) and the Internet Go Server (IGS). Also, check out Samarkand for cool Go goodies.
