It's recommend that you check out Eternal Silence (http://www.eternal-silence.net). It's a hybrid space combat sim/FPS Source mod.

There's also two MMOs coming out specifically in this vein, Jump Gate Evolution and Black Prophecy. I've signed up for the betas on both and have my fingers crossed.

Agreed, EVE isn't a good substitude for Elite. Sounds like you were more looking for something like Jumpgate Evolution.

Jumpgate Evolution may interest you, when it eventually comes out. A twitch-based space fighter sim MMO, with a pretty good sounding flight model.

Yar, i hear you. Early on, pre-beta, it was explained that this was definitely not going to be a "twitch" game; this was for a different audience. Hopefully someone will fill the twitch niche for y'all :).

As for the casual aspect of eve, that may have gotten a little easier with Faction Warfare. It seems like there are a lot of newer folks able to jump into combat and enjoying it. The push to maintain tech2 ships, capitals, etc., can take up a lot of time; but with even a casual income, you can infinitely support a frigate/cruiser stock.

Why are you bothering with expensive implants if you're a casual player, tho...? I've been in from the start and don't even bother with 'em tbh. If i run across one, i usually sell it.

None of this will matter if you hate the combat system, of course. I like the "you've won or lost when you close the fitting screen" aspect. Flying against other new players in FW will mitigate your need to perfect that and enable you to experiment more, and it's not really meant for soloing unless you are a high-SP master of something... but i like the tactical combat style.

I would as well, but it doesn't look like that's forthcoming any time soon. As a sort of replacement, I have high hopes for Jumpgate Evolution. It's not exactly X-Wing, but it looks like it might be able to recreate the fun of those games.

And if it does, I may as well quit my job, because I'm not going to be able to tear myself away.

I love space combat games and if any MMORPG was going to suck me in, it would have been this one.

Jumpgate Evolution is what I'm hoping will deliver a quality space combat MMO, but if you prefer the more tactical (from what I've seen) combat that Eve has, JGE may not be your cup of tea. It looks like it's going to be more like an MMO version of something like X-Wing or Freespace.
