This interests me. I've heard about mining asteroids, and speaking of the percent of them that are iron, nickel, copper, platinum, etc.
I have questions- In gold mines, what percentage is ore vs. gold?
- Likewise platinum mines?
- what method is used to separate gold from the ore?
- what techniques could be used to separate desired metals from the ore, given constraints of lifting smelter equip. to space, and operating in zero or generated (centriptal) "gravity"?
- how much energy is required to heat iron to boiling, and given that, has anyone tried (in an actual college-experiment) to ionize it and run it through a high-impulse engine?
- would the constraints of a space-based nuclear-thermal powerplant be sufficient to run this king of engine?
In terms of which asteroid to use, more questions:- has anyone made an actual list of viable cantidate asteroids?
- what conceivable delta-v could we impart to a hunk of rock that's medium sized, say 100 to 500 meters diameter?
- what is the ideal asteroid size for such a venture? Probably small so we could get it done before, oh, say, NEVER...
- Do we have a list of near Earth asteroids that fit the description, or is 100 meters too small to find?
- presuming we'd want to drill into the asteroid to set up temporary shelter (radiation protection, etc.), has anyone worked out how to do this with shaped charges, directed energy (reflected light), or other drilling techniques?
I had an idea for a smelter once: break off a chunk of asteroid, wrap it in silvered mylar to reflect radiant heat back in, put it at the center of a giant parabolic reflector dish, melt it using solar energy, spin it to generate gravity, and the densest materials will condense on the outside at the equator, right? Of course, if you seal it up ahead of time the outgassing may include oxygen, nitrogen, etc., which you can separate by liquid diffraction (?).

I agree that the planet approached the sun very quickly. Great observation. I might postulate that the eclipse duration could be explained by an eccentric orbit (sorry I don't remember the orbital mechanics graphic they put in the movie though).
Okay, here's PITCH BLACK MOVIE's presumption (I don't have the game, so no comment on that): A moon around a gas giant around a binary system, right? The binary suns are almost always separated enough in the sky to produce continuous daytime, or illuminating the gas giant's atmosphere enough to generate very bright reflected light.
Let's refine this. The GG (gas giant) orbits a binary system. All orbits are in the same plane otherwise the eclipses are too long betweentimes (hundreds or thousands of years not tens). The two stars orbit a common center of mass; the GG orbits that mass at a farther distance. QUESTION FOR ASTROPHYSICS PEOPLE:Is there any mechanism tending to circularize an orbit other than collision with objects? Would another planets' gravity circularize a highly eccentric orbit?
Anyway, The GG orbits, the Gas Giant's Moon (GGM) always has both stars in the sky or GG shine from both suns. EXCEPT when the GG aligns with both suns, and the GGM is in line as well. The duration of the eclipse would be determined by:- eccentricity of GG
- eccentricity of GGM around GG
- apparent diameter of GG in GGM's sky;
- apparent diameter of each sun in GG's sky
- inclination of the orbital plane of GGM around GG
- orbital inclination of GG around StarA and StarB
We can presume main sequence stars.
Here's another ASTROPHYSICS QUESTIONIn a system with where two G2 stars like our Sol orbit each other at a typical binary star system distance (whatever that is? say something like Mercury-diameter), what is the orbital distance where the same solar energy as Earth receives?
I would guess very close to our current orbit. Let's see... Radiation decreases with the square of the distance, so I think it's 1.17 AU's (sqrt 30000 km; y=sqrt(x^2 / 2). Someone please check my math here...?
What is the average (emperically measured) sun-to-sun distance in a binary system? Has this been measured / averaged?

Tivo Preview
Tivo pushed a 2-minute 'preview of'/'making of' 'Chronicles of Riddick' out to my Tivo unit this last Sunday as per their normal marketing arrangements.
It claims (IIRC) that the movie starts where the quite good action sci-fi adventure 'Pitch Black' left off. The character played by Vin Diesel was apparently too intriquing to let go, and a numbered sequel (a la` Pitch Black II) was probably too ordinary.
I admit the universe presented in Pitch Black is interesting. They got a good bit of science right in that they used a planetary eclipse for the mating time, which is unusual enough to be a natural idea. I would have liked to see some vegetation to support this biological system, but on the whole it seemed pretty good.
The spacecraft, the concept of a prison ship, this is pretty normal stuff, but I like the concept of either electromechanichal or biologically enhanced eyesight as a mini-superpower, given present technology trends this seems reasonable given the rest of their technology structures.
If anyone has a further comment on the hard-sci-fi tech aspect of these movies, please post, I am interested if they conform to the almost-reasonable traditions of Niven and Asimov.

I did a white paper on configuration management while a consultant at a
... fortune 500 retailer Se**s.com (home of cr****man tools and Ken***e appliances). I evaluated version control and bug tracking combined ('config management' embodies these two functions).In any large software project, the issues of bug tracking and version control are very, very tightly interwound. With 100+ developers and 20+ quality assurance (qa) testers, we'd get lots of both bugs and fixes. The trouble was how to associate the two. I built some tools for short term use (that are still in use) using (ugg!) PVCS (not polyvinyl chloride
:-) ) and a custom built bug database. We'd associate a checkin of several files with a bug number, promote them to(copy 'em into) the qa dir, send a email to qa, and allow qa to approve the change by bug number not by file number, which promoted (copied) them to the production-level directory. Its a pretty smooth system for something we developed in-house, but it would have been nice to have a web interface, and all the bells and whistles that a purchased product would provide.Building this was a pain in the butt. Continuus does this, as does Rational, but they are both hideously expensive ($300 - $500 per seat). There were some also-rans (close competitors that didn't quite work right or satisfy the criteria).
The big deal was getting something in house fast. The more money it cost, the more time management took to decide (they still haven't). What we (in the open source community, and Linux in particular) need is a toolset that integrates bug tracking and version control tightly. It really multiplies programmer productivity because the time they don't spend copying files for a custom build. QA is happy because they're assured a bug goes away, and that the tests they run can be regressively associated with a bug number and therefore with a set of files that work together, not one at a time.
