Re:Sounds like a great time...

Re:What is the state of KDE?
KDE4 certainly pushed me away after being a KDE user since pre-1.0 in the 90s, but I just recently (this year) came back and now I love it again. Give KDE neon a try if you want to see modern KDE in action.
-
Re:Fedora did KDE better than Ubuntu
Try KDE neon. It's Ubuntu LTS + rolling releases of the latest stable versions of the KDE packages straight from the KDE project itself.
-
Re:There are no properly packaged KDE distros toda
Try KDE Neon, it's built on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS and maintained by the KDE community.

Re:What I would like to read: "1024 bugs fixed"
To be fair, I found a more detailed changelog that mentions a few more bugs, but it's just lot of papercut fixes: tons of warnings removed, Unicode quircks corrected, UI changes... but nothing about high CPU usage, instability, and other major issues.
It's still possible to see the desktop and all the windows on it every time the system resumes on a laptop, before the KScreenLocker kicks asking for the password... but, hey, now it compiles with "strict" compile flags, and finally exports the install location for DBUS interfaces via CMake.
"Shake it, baby!" -
What I would like to read: "1024 bugs fixed"Come on, make users happy and do what a dot-14 version should do.
I'm not even picky, you guys can choose them from any of these lists:
KWin
Plasma Frameworks
PlasmaShell
But what TFA has to say about?Blurred backgrounds behind desktop context menus are no longer visually corrupted.
It's no longer possible to accidentally drag-and-drop task manager buttons into app windows.Yeah!.... I guess?

I'm going to guess it's FUD related to long-closed issues with QT.

Re:Kubuntu ROCKS (yes, penguinized now, finally)
KDE is barely open source. That's a major problem.
How's that? There's a pretty long list of project repositories.

KDEConnect
An alternative for Linux users is KDEConnect (may work on Mac/Windows with some effort, but not supported). Not quite the same and requires an application installed on the desktop computer rather than working over the web, but offers more functionality and definitely more privacy.
A short features list from the github (https://github.com/KDE/kdeconnect-kde) page:
- Shared clipboard: copy and paste between your phone and your computer (or any other device).
- Notification sync: Read and reply to your Android notifications from the desktop.
- Share files and URLs instantly from one device to another.
- Multimedia remote control: Use your phone as a remote for Linux media players.
- Virtual touchpad: Use your phone screen as your computer's touchpad and keyboard. This operates over your existing WiFi network using TLS encryption.
The SMS support is still a work in progress, but currently you can receive notifications on your desktop of incoming text messages and reply to them. Can't initiate yet, but that's coming.

Re:Part of a Norm
I'm constantly amazed that so many people on Slashdot want to put the GNOME Foundations problems down to 'outreach programs' and 'SJWs' rather than the fact that GNOME is piece of shit and nobody wants to use it, hence nobody wants to support the foundation behind it.
Don't believe me? KDE has its own outreach program for women, yet you don't hear about them having the same problems. Why? Because KDE fucking works, it's perfectly usable (for now at least), so not even the most anti-SJW types give a shit because good software is good software!
This actually increasingly angers me because it pretends that if GNOME just killed their outreach program, all would be fine, when it obviously wouldn't. So if you just want to talk about the software itself, nobody's stopping you. But if your first criticism of GNOME is a bloody outreach program, then I'd say you're at least as bad as any SJW you criticise.

Re:As a KDE user.
Mint already has too many flavors imho -- and ones based off of ubuntu and directly off of debian as well. It's a small team, and I'd love it if they'd just focus on the Cinnamon DE and make an official Cinnamon flavor of Ubuntu (with Wayland support, too!). But, I understand they have different goals. I just think they bit off more than they can chew with all these flavors.... especially with KDE.
Oh good it wasn't just me - I wanted to end up at KDE for Connect alone https://community.kde.org/KDEC.... It's just KDE is so configurable and me new that I'd mess it up so badly I had to remove it.
I've landed on Cinnamon as my flavor of choice, Linux Mint is also my first, so not much experience with the others.

Re:Dammit
KDE Neon is your new friend. Built by KDE on a LTR Ubuntu core.
-
Re:As a Linux Mint KDE user
KDE Neon is your answer. The KDE team put it together on a stable LTR Ubuntu core, likely because they got tired of all the KDE haters who seem to run distros.

Re:Or...NSFW (Not Safe For Windows)
Fuck Chrome, Fuck Edge. They're like plastic whores who kiss and tell every single time. Mozilla is too corrupt right now to have any engineering sense. What's left, Slack clients? Back to the desktop?
Something really scary like your systems file manager? Something which Microsoft tried to do back in Windows 98 days but backfired on them big time.LOL I remember the first time computer viruses became a real problem with Windows coincided almost exactly with the release of what became the IE engine as the desktop interface.
Since then the differentiation between browser, file manager and program launching UI has become the stumbling point of UI design and one of key reasons why most users just don't quite get the concept of program execution security. If you shit in your sandbox it is still going to get all over your clothes if your sandbox is the only place you know how to play! Dumbing down the users caused the problems with computer security in the first place. So Edge locking down the internet sandbox for Windows users to the point of breaking shit is not a bad first step in isolating the dumbed down users who cause the majority of bot net shit to happen in the first place. Edge adoption should be mandatory for anyone who cannot even install an operating system let alone grasp what a bot net is!

Re:Because
I'm no Apple user so I don't know about Keynote. But for ensuring compatibility, I make sure that my wife's PowerPoint presentations are all converted to PDF.
Anyway, in Linux you could use Impress, which is more than enough for most people in need of a graphical slide editor.
As for me, in my lectures I use Beamer in LaTeX, which is more than enough for my needs. And its output is, again, PDF.
I can project anything of these with Okular in presentation mode, easily. So I think Linux is more than capable in the area.
