LASFS
Go to www.lasfs.org and look for the Young Adult Science Fiction reading list. There is also a children's reading list that may be helpful. I'd be a bit concerned that you don't want books that raise questions that you don't want to have to answer and that their parents don't want you to answer.

Brave New World has been done. Give it a rest.
The Forever War sounds promising. Now I need to go read it...
Shameless plug: The LASFS Library has this and other good SF books. If your in LA, stop by and take a look. Meetings are on Thursday starting at 8:10 PM.
Just my $0.02 worth.

Starting a LUG
No only do I think LUGs are useful, I want to start one. If anyone in the San Fernando Valley (CA) is interested, please stop by the LASFS clubhouse on Thursday Night (07/26/07) and ask for Ed Hooper.
As always, just my $0.02 worth. -
Re:Enough
ROTFLMAO! What a pathetic ad hominem excuse for a reply. I happen to be, among other things, a member of the Board of Directors of LASFS, This World's Oldest Science Fiction club. Just recently I resigned my position as Secretary to the Board over a matter of principle. Not only that, but I did it in such a way that the next secretary won't have the same issue I did because dealing with my resignation forced the issue and caused it to be resolved. Stand on principle all you want, but don't expect the world to change in most cases; I'll admit I was lucky, but then again, I know how to pick my fights and don't start when I don't have a chance.

Re:Mmmm, star wars
The gentleman's name is Shawn Crosby. His wife, Colleen, is very hot looking. They make costumes as hobbies, winning several awards at conventions. Not to mention they are both huge Star Wars fans. Her website is here. It's already down under the load, but bookmark it for future reference.
They (and I) are also members of LASFS (Los Angeles Science Fantasy Society). And I bet more than a few of them read Slashdot -
Geek places in North America to visit
If you could start your trip earlier, then I would suggest Toronto, Ontario for the World Science Fiction Convention being help August 28 through September 1. Info at the Torcon 3 website.
Other geek places to visit are Comic Vendor, the world first comic book store in Torrance, California; The Los Angeles Science Fantasy Society in North Hollywood, California; and (if you are a baseball geek) Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, California.

Where would it end?
Would this tax include items sold in the dealer's rooms at SF conventions? What a nightmare that would be for the people organizing small relaxacons (like LA LA CON). Also, how could we, the SF fans, be certain that this money is really going to NASA and not into the general fund, or worse yet into the pockets of legislators.
