Re:NetworkManager
I tried it on ibex as well, and can confirm the grandparent's experience. Network Manager has a very bad habit of forgetting static IP settings. (ibex open bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager/+bug/256054 )

What linux ACTUALLY needs
Is more vendor support. Every supposed real problem with Linux is based on or related to a problem with a driver; nine times out of ten this problem is caused by the manufacturer being unwilling or unable to release specifications. The various vendors out there need to realize that Linux may not be the future, but it's a more likely future than Windows, and they need to put some effort into support. Of course, some of them have, and if you reward them by purchasing their hardware, they may do more of it. Regardless, having multiple GUIs isn't actually a real problem - it's an opportunity, not a setback, and meanwhile you can trivially use libqt to draw GTK+ apps or use GTK+ to draw widgets for libqt programs (Sorry I haven't updated in a while, my last build FAILED on the build servers but worked at home, and it was a compiler error, NOT a library I forgot to specify. Nice work, Ubuntu!)

Old ThinkPad + Ubuntu Netbook Remix + Firefox
My son's nearly 3 and has an old (slightly broken) ThinkPad loaded with Ubuntu Intrepid, and some parts of the NetBook Remix:
- maximus - ensures all windows are full screened
- window picker applet - gives a titlebar and better window picker
- Firefox set to autostart and has speed dials to his favourite sites with the address bar hidden.
At 2.5, I'm not worried about him typing in an address and seeing something he shouldn't, and the speed dials are big enough to get him to Thomas and Friends, CBeebies, Kneebouncers and a few other sites.
The mouse pointer size is bumped up to maximum (Preferences > Appearance > Themes > Advanced, IIRC) and the speed dials have really helped him with his mouse control, and he can now navigate pretty much unaided around the CBeebies website, playing the Flash games there.
And no, we don't use this as an electronic babysitter.

Ubuntu won't even dump core correctly. Do you really think it can manage EAL6+?

Re:It is a good middle ground.
I call bullshit on your experience reporting Ubuntu bugs. I have read a _number_ of Ubuntu bug reports and there is a clear pattern:
"Thanks for reporting this bug and any supporting documentation. ... Thanks for taking the time to make Ubuntu better!"
I'm quoting above from a response I received yesterday, but search the bug tracker and you'll see the pattern for yourself.
What may vary is whether the submitter actually took the time to include enough information to help developers resolve the problem. Either way a friendly and polite response follows; either thanks for the submission, or instructions on what additional information is needed.
Bug tracker comments indicate the Ubuntu developers are not just professional, but helpful and friendly. -
Re:It is a good middle ground.
Launchpad? Hah, that's a good one. While they don't mod you as troll there, they certainly do ignore the problem.
-
Re:It is a good middle ground.
I Never had a good clean Ubuntu experience. Yet I report such problems except for saying oh this is a problem it may be unique, they just mod me as troll and ignore the problem.
Well there you go then. Instead of taking your issues to the kind of places that can "mod you as troll," you should take them to the kind of places that can "fix your damn problems."
That is why Linux is limited to 2% market share.
Because of Slashdot? You know, somehow I don't think that's it.

Re:Why no 32 bit browser?
Is this just one of these ideological things where the actual advantages for the user are disregarded?
Yes.
It's actually more about power than ideology. The key people behind Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora and the other major distros all fervently believe that they and they alone should be the gatekeepers of all software run by their users. They see no reason why somebody should be able to get software from somewhere other than them. Thus they see no reason why binary compatibility is needed or useful. Thus being binary compatible with 32 bit binaries is simply a waste of disk space (which is extremely cheap but logic doesn't play into this).
This position is moronic but ubiquitous in the Linux world. It leads to absolute frustration on the part of any developer who actually cares what bits make it into their users hands - the almighty Firefox/Debian smackdown is rooted in this problem. There have been many other problems though: proprietary software like video games or Google Earth rely on huge hacks to make their stuff work, upstream developers like Inkscape get tired of their users running versions of their software obsoleted months ago because no upgrade is available from their distro. It leads to bugs like this one, which boil down to "our packaging policies are too inflexible to give you the features you want". And so on.
It always fascinates me how much criticism Apple has received over their control over the iPhone app store and the arbitrary policies they impose on developers there, but when Linux distributors do exactly the same thing there is only stony silence. Software gets dropped, changed arbitrarily, held back to obsolete versions or denied entry into the repositories entirely, forcing bizarre hacks (try writing down the instructions for running a 3rd party loki installer some time!).
The lack of 32 bit support is just one facet of this ridiculous ideology.

Re:Lies, all lies
Yes, complete lies. After all Microsoft have deliberately broken hotmail under linux. Works with FF under Windows but hey check the user agent for the OS. See: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/279802

This is actually a patch that they tried to roll out to fix Ubuntu bug #1, a great stride forward too.

Re:LaptopsApparently all kinds of reasons, I suspect mostly that it's difficult, but maybe also very weird ACPI shenanigans.
Let's start with saying that it's now apparently being improved and the issues fixed:

But before that.. well who knows.

Serious regressions
I've experienced serious regressions with Intrepid Ibex. Among them is bad audio due largely I suspect to the new False, I mean, Pulse Audio system. Wine games are largely unplayable unless I disable sound. Then there's the confirmed "won't fix" bug concerning Gnome session (https link to Ubuntu bug tracker here). Now every time I log out I have to manually restart all my applications. I'm not talking about the usual background system stuff but the important end-user programs like Pidgin, Firefox and Gnome Terminal. All in all, this is the most troubling Linux upgrade I've experienced since I switched to a Debian derivative. The last time something like this broke was when I couldn't play Crack Attack because of a Mesa incompatibility in Debian Unstable! And that was fixed within weeks.
-
Re:Is PulseAudio still there?
Have you tried timidity in the new AMD64 live CD?
Yes, how about Wine?
Have you tried how your cardreaders will be mounted in the new live CD?
Have you tried to search for DAAP and iTunes on https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu ?
Have you reported any bugs for networkmanager on https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+filebug and made people aware of the problem?
How do you define ugly, shaky and middle-end modern?
...if not, doesn't seem possible to answer to me.Bottom line: What have you done to help to get the features work properly?
Someone let me know when malevolentjelly grows up. I'll stick to reading other comments in the interim.

Re:But will the wifi work?
Is OK. I'm just glad you're not intentionally trolling.
:)Going over the relevant bug (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/intrepid/+source/linux-restricted-modules-2.6.24/+bug/182489) it looks like the answer is "yes, but there's a twist". The driver was included, but turned out to cause more problems than it solved, but the release window closed too soon. So the solution is to install the 'linux-backport-modules' package for intrepid (http://packages.ubuntu.com/search?keywords=linux-backports-modules-intrepid). If you can't connect to the 'net to get the package, you can download it manually at http://packages.ubuntu.com/intrepid/i386/linux-backports-modules-2.6.27-7-generic/download by clicking on one of the mirror links. This page was found from http://packages.ubuntu.com/search?keywords=linux-backports-modules-intrepid by making assumptions about your system, namely that it was a desktop system (click on "intrepid" in "intrepid (devel): Backported drivers for generic kernel image"), that it was 32-bit system instead of AMD 64-bit (the "i386" link). You'll need to go through the selection process again if you use a different system than what I assumed, or if you wait too long and there's a kernel update (because you'd end up downloading the package for the old kernel instead of the package for the new kernel, and it would fail to install). HTH.

Re:Kubuntu and Nvidia
There are some graphical glitches with some Nvidia (5,6 and 7 series) processors:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/99508I never had the problem with Hardy but I see it very frequently after upgrading to the Intrepid RC a few days ago. The workaround is to use a non-Human based theme or disable Compiz. Since the issue only affects certain themes it seems to me like it's more likely a theme or Compiz bug than an nVidia problem.

Re:New features
Personally, despite some wonderful new features, I'm going to stick with 8.04 for a bit, at least until they work out the bugs. Of course, I won't ever be prompted to upgrade to 8.10, because 8.04 is a long term support release. Having a look at the release notes, at least one unacceptable (for me) bug is:
On laptops with Intel 3945 or Intel 4965 wireless chipsets and a killswitch for the wireless antenna, starting the system with the killswitch enabled (i.e., with wireless disabled) will prevent re-enabling the wireless by toggling the killswitch. As a workaround, users should boot the system with the killswitch disabled. A future kernel update is expected to address this issue.
This is not a new bug in 8.10 by any means, it's been present since 8.04.

and yet it still has the same bug...
ok, this is going to be a rant, so hold on to your seats. But having dealt with this bug for so long has gotten me near the edge when it comes to mozilla
---rant begin---
It still has the same linux bug people have been complaining about for I have no idea how long and effects quite a number of users...
https://bugs.launchpad.net/firefox/+bug/125970 - and this wasnt the first time it was logged either. Check out the last link in that bug report and feel the pain if the bug affects you...
Then again, I keep making the assumption mozilla give a flying
.... about linux, which means im the one in the wrong, right? Its really the only piece of the linux puzzle i've yet to be able to find an adequate answer to and I've tried them all. The sad part is that mozilla is the best answer in most situations (though between IEs4linux and opera theres a possible answer there).yes i've tried ever fix ever mentioned for it... So far the only real method that "works" is to use something like the adblock plugin to kill off the performance destroying aspects of a website.
----rant end----
ok, im done... apologies in advance and so forth.

Re:Performance Problems AREN'T Where You Think...
Disk access has been slowing everything down.
Variable elimination has been done, to varying extent, by multiple people here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/131094 -
Re:xubuntu
Thw slow down since Feisty I am aware of has nothing to do with desktop environment: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/131094
-
Article is NOT flamebaitMany here without any specific knowledge of problem are giving it 10 seconds thought, waving hands and saying that the article is a flamebait.
Being a Ubuntu user since Feisty, I believe that the article is spot on. The reason I say this is because there is a huge problem with desktop responsiveness, and it started after Feisty: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/131094
This is NOT the plausible small hit due to increase in hardware support. The problem reported by so many on that bug report above is about having a modern system hanging for 1 or 2 seconds (or more), for operations that were "instantaneous" on Feisty.
FWIW, in the LWN comments about 8.10 there is yet another person mentioning the same issue: problems with kernels after Feisty http://lwn.net/Articles/304710/
-
It partly due to the inclusion of alpha software
I think it was 7.10 that first included Tracker turned on by default. At this point Tracker was still alpha software, many users reported it taking up all available resources, and complaints were simply brushed aside. After suffering from my Ubuntu installation constantly freezing due to trackerd, and being unable to disable it without removing it (I disabled it in 3 separate places but it still persisted on restart) I installed Fedora and never looked back. It may not be quite so "polished" but it hasn't sprung any nasty surprises on me.
-
Re:Total system freezes, for one
my pet bug, been waiting for over two years for someone to rename a symlink, currently the system hangs on shutdown / reboot (very annoying on the desktop, you'll need to call tech support on a server)
-
Re:But it is in a PPA and will be in backports.
As others mentioned it will be in backports though and if you're impatient, you can get it right away by adding the PPA: https://launchpad.net/~openoffice-pkgs/+archive
Just add the deb and deb-src lines from the top of that page to
/etc/apt/source.listThen do a sudo aptitude update or whatever your preferred package manager is and then 3.0 will be available for install through your package manager. I realize it's not just there and easy for the taking, but the above isn't too hard if you want 3.0 now. In fact it works for Hardy too if you change the source.list entries appropriately.
-
Re:I haven't got it yet, not in repository yet.
>You'll be waiting a while. Ubuntu won't have OO.o 3 until next April.
> Long story short: upstream delays made it miss the Intrepid feature freeze.
Yes, quite true, but you can always simply add the following to the apt sources:
http://ppa.launchpad.net/openoffice-pkgs/ubuntu intrepid main
Doing that will save a wait until next April.
-
Re:I haven't got it yet, not in repository yet.
Ubuntu has OO.o 3.0 in its PPA repositories. You can add them easily.
