Re:Canadian Heritage
they were told by the CRTC to come up with two minutes of "identifiable Canadian content,"
Do you have a link to back that up? Because the entire fscking show was "Canadian Content" - *ALL* of it (which you'd know if you'd ever read the CanCon regulations.) CanCon has nothing (as in ***NOTHING***) to do with the subject matter of a program. At all.
The real story behind Bob & Doug goes as follows:
Because commercial time in Canada is two minutes shorter in Canada than in the US, SCTV needed two extra minutes of the show for the Canadian broadcasts (ie, a single two-minute sketch that would be deleted from the US broadcasts.) The producers decided to make it a parody of Canadians, and Bob and Doug were born. -
Re:Stop Whining
Well there are the remarkable correlations between atmospheric carbon dioxide and temperature, even over the 650,000 years spanned by Antarctic ice cores.
What may be even more remarkable is the correlation between solar activity and atmospheric temperature.
There is increasing opinion that solar activity is a primary cause of warming. In fact, solar output has been increasing about .05% since 1970. -
Re:This is a surprise?
That's not only France.
The EU seems to restrict the overall tv content of all EU members to be at least 50% but it is ignored by many tv stations or is not possible by small countries ( http://oldfraser.lexi.net/publications/forum/1998/ august/critique.html ,
http://the-script.blogspot.com/ ).
And this is got. If there would be more than 50% non-us-content it would cause an uproar by politicians. -
Re:OT:Re:Classic iPod quotesThe statistics you quote do not prove anything about guns. Indeed Canada, which is armed to the teeth, has almost twice the assault rate of the US. Statistics such as these can reflect everything from the demographics of the country, to the emphasis on law enforcement, to the likelyhood that a crime will be reported, or even simply that the US has a huge proportion of its population in prison. Indeed, as you state, our homicide rate is twice as high, which you dismiss as being only one of four crimes - but I think all would agree that it is the big daddy of them all. Like I said, I was robbed and am unhappy about it, but I sure as hell am glad I wasn't killed. In my particular case, had I rounded the corner and been carrying a gun, now those crackheads would have my wallet AND a gun. Also, as you might remember, the US crime rate is hovering around the lowest it has been in 40 years (thanks largely to law enforcement efforts in New York). Your argument based on these statistics would vaporize if we substitute early 90's data.
It's great that your gun makes you feel safe, but it does not make me feel safe. If you shoot that thing anywhere in Manhattan, you are very likely to hit someone - or even just something more valuable than the contents of your wallet.
Guns are just one "equalizer". Did you know that single men are the most victimized group? That is because women tend to travel in groups for safety, and married people are usually traveling together. Only single men are likely to be walking alone. This is not where I first read it, but here is a Canadian article that describes similar surprising crime demographics (it's just the first one I hit on Google). There are shorter-range, non-lethal alternatives to handguns such as tasers and pepper spray that are also equalizers. I think in an urban environment, it is okay to be very careful about who carries a handgun.

Re:Colder Places Always Warm Fastest
Sorry, now I've posted the other link about the ice cores. The decline and fall of global warming is here.

Re:It's not so bad
To really understand to parent it is nice to know that something Canadians hate is that many radio stations are forced to play a 20% Canadian content. You have to do this to access tax breaks and various government programs.
example:
The CBC radio [government own/controlled] networks are required, as a condition of licence, to ensure that at least 50 percent of content category 2 music and at least 20 percent of category 3 music broadcast each week is "Canadian"
(source)
This is why there is no "true rock" or "real disco" radio station. To fill Canadian content a "pop" stations have no choice but to add Rush and Celine Dion to it's program. Yaaaawn! -
Re:NIMBY
The world's real problem is overpopulation of human beings
The world's real problem is not even the overpopulation with human beings having the resource consumption of the average north american. But it's already a lot nearer to the truth.
