Re:Sync on green....> SGI Monitors are Sync-on-green and there are plenty of them that have dual connectors.. both 13w3 (sgi/sun connector) and HD15 (IBM PC). HD15 is also easily convertable to DB15 available on most macs (except some new ones with HD15).
<AOL>me too</AOL>
I've modded an SGI (Sony OEM) GDM20D11, sync-on-green, to run on a Sun Ultra 5 workstation with separate sync. I followed the instructions I found on Adam Kropelin's site: http://www.kroptech.com/gdm20d11mod/.
Another guy (http://perso.libertysurf.fr/lgranjon/electroniqu
e /sgi2pc.htm) has documented hacks for the GDM20D10 (Sun) and GDM20D11 (SGI) to run on a PC. It's in French, but the important information is language-independent. -

Many Consumer DVD players can disable MacrovisionFor instance the first Sony high-end model the DVP-7000 from a few years ago had dip switches inside that let you disable the region blocking and Macrovision.
The APEX 600D mentioned here at Slashdot has the "hidden" menu that lets you disable Macrovision.
Here is a list of region/macrovision cracks for home dvd players (many done with a keysequence on remote control)
If that is already slashdot'd, try one of the mirrors through:
So basicly, the PS2 hack is not news. You can go out today and a consumer DVD player with a known Macrovision disable feature, and copy movies to video tape to your hearts content, and avoid all the Macrovision glitches.

Re:DeCSS and MPAA (Not a question)
There seems to be software out there to copy direct to VCD - I've seen it referred to and I once heard someone on another machine in a lab referring to their using it. Can't find a copy to prove it, though.
I found this link in an earlier DeCSS article; it lists no less than 19 programs under the DVD-rippers header. Now, from what I can gather, a few of these programs need to be used in concert, but the fact remains that there are several methods to rip DVDs out there, only one of which is DeCSS. Now, I haven't used any of them, but from what I can gather--especially from looking at some of the quite detailed "how to rip DVD's using blah" articles I found on the above link--it appears to be quite a lot easier to get yourself either a lossless or a reduced-size mpeg of your DVD's using the tools that were already out there than with DeCSS. -
Re:We can only speak for ourselves
But, deCSS and utils based upon it are available for windows, which provide no other purpose but copying.
Wrong.
DeCSS was written for Windows...so that it could be used to play DVD's under Linux.
Or rather, so that it could be used to play DVD's under WINE under Linux. According to Jon Johansen (the 16-year old member of MoRE who was arrested in Norway for writing deCSS--although he probably didn't), this was a necessary first step because at the time, Linux didn't offer support for the file format used on DVD's. (Can't remember the acronym right now, and can't find the article in which he was quoted as saying this. It was one of the "Jon Johansen gets arrested" articles referenced by a poster in an earlier DeCSS thread...) Thus, at the time, DeCSS on WINE was the only way for those who will only allow free software on their computers--and there are many of them--to play a DVD.
Then, once support for that format was available for Linux (again, this is what Jon was quoted as saying), a program that ran DVD on Linux the right way--CSS-auth--could be written. But DeCSS was a legitimate first step towards that goal; for a short time, DeCSS on WINE was the only way to view DVD's on Linux.
Or, of course, you could have just had one of your Windows using friends rip any DVD to MPEG using one of the many many *many* available rippers that allowed the CSS key already included in any Windows DVD software to break the encryption before capturing the file. This page lists no less than 19 of them. IIRC, only one of those listed (DeCSS) actually breaks CSS itself. That is, there were (I believe) no less than 18 DVD rippers already available before CSS was reverse-engineered.
As for your argument that these rippers were "less perfect" than a DeCSSed copy, I can't say, since I've never seen the output of any of them. However, I do know that CD-to-mp3 rippers are of greatly varying quality, and are always improving; unless there's some technical obstacle I don't know of (and I highly doubt it), there's no good reason why these tools wouldn't become perfect very very soon--especially because what they do is not, as I understand it, any different from the job a CD ripper does. -
Re:Justice vs. piracyWell, DeCSS *might* be used to rip movies.
But making VCD versions of DVD movies (crappy quality though it is) was possible long before DeCSS, simply by patching into the DLL on one of the Windows players and snatch the video-output. Check out http://perso.libertysurf.fr/dvdrip/

Mirrors part 1Visit Humpin! (No, it's not what you think!)
Temporary restraining order DENIED!
Thanks to the efforts of the Electronic Frontier Foundation and the organization and support provided by a few of our fellow defendants we are still here! Another hearing is scheduled for January 14th.
We would like to point out to all of the mirror sites with things like "fuck the lawyers" on them that it is because of a generous group of lawyers that we are still here. These lawyers are working for free (or much less than they could get by going over to the Dark Side) and don't deserve this kind of abuse.
Here is the EFF's stance on this case.
Save a copy of this web page now!
We have just been informed that the DVD Copy Control Association is seeking a restraining order against us (named as "Doe 28") for distributing DeCSS and linking to pages that distribute it and linking to pages that link to pages that distribute it.
Section 48 of this request states that we supposedly "have received notice through the MPA and refused to remove the information at issue". This is absolutely false! We have never received any such request (from the MPA or anybody else for that matter) and we obviously were not given the opportunity to refuse! Either Jared Bobrow needs to go back to law school or the DVD CCA needs to get a new firm. This is the kind of sloppy work that could get an important document thrown out.
Here is a 2600 story on this.
Explanation on legality of this information
The software (source as well as binaries) offered on this site can be freely redistributed because it was published under the GNU General Public License. The purpose of this software is not illegal copying of DVD disks. It is meant to provide information necessary to be able to program a DVD player for Linux. To do this, the CSS system needs to be incorporated in the player. Recently the (very weak) DVD content scrambling system was deciphered, freeing the way for a Linux DVD player. The CSS system is not a copy protection system, since it does not prevent copying of the disk. Writing information about the way an encryption scheme functions is completely legal. The source code and binaries on this site are completely legal too, since they contain no code from the DVD consortium or its members. The sources and programs on this site were written by third parties using clean-room reverse engineering methods which are (ready?) completly legal.
Attention www.rhythm.cx was hosting a list of mirrors for these files. That list of mirrors has been replaced with a page reading "This site has been taken down for legal reasons." Here's what the maintainer put on the site the day it was shut down:
NOTE (Thu, Nov 11, 12:17pm EST): I've recently been informed that a law firm which is likely to be one that would try get these mirrors taken down has been visiting this mirror site as well as others. With that said, there is a possibility that I may have to remove this site in the near future because like everyone else, I can't afford to go to court to fight it. Luckly, it seems fairly unlikely that any law firm will ever be able to get rid of all these mirrors at this point (there are currently 41 in 8 different countries and this list is growing every day). However, I have only seen very few mirror _lists_ like this one anyplace. If anyone has the resources, it might be wise to mirror this list of mirrors as well so that the right people will still know that these mirrors exist.
Here is a 2600 story with more details on how rhythm.cx was shut down.
Current Mirrors Last updated: Wed, Jan 19, 12:13am EST
Numbers are only for the maintainer's convenienceWe apologize for the length of time between updates. This list has gotten quite large and thus more difficult to maintain.
Much thanks to this site for listing mirrors of the mirror lists.

Mirrors part 1Note: This mirror list has been copied from http://www.humpin.org/decss/, on January 2nd 2000 13:13 GMT
Mirrors since 28-Dec-99 added by me.
To my main DVD page (containing list of lists of mirrors) Visit Humpin!
If you need a REAL reason to host these files, try reading this. Truth has never been more purely distilled.Save a copy of this web page now!
Current Mirrors Last updated: Fri, Dec 31, 8:18pm EST
Numbers are only for the maintainer's convenienceMuch thanks to this site for listing mirrors of the mirror lists.

Piracy -IS- The Issue (ReadMe)
I think a lot of you have forgotten what you stand for... Open Source.
You see, when you create a means of DVD Encryption that is, in your minds, strictly for the playing of the files, and then release it as Open Source code, how many people think that someone else won't grab the code and rewrite it to decrypt for piracy?
What the creators should have done was find the key, and then put it in some sort of binary (Closed Source) and then run their stream through it. This would prevent anyone that wanted to rewrite the code for their own piracy purposes fairly well.
What a lot of people here overlook is the fact that Open Source means all is showing and all can take the code and use it where they want. Licenses are just a legality, but when it comes to piracy, you just don't care about them. Hence the reason that D.O.D. (Drink Or Die - a software piracy group) was able to write their program "DVD Speed Ripper v1.1" ( Some page I found with a link to it ).
BUT, if you look here you'll see that there are many programs to do this. I myself, quite a while ago, found a page describing how to do it with just Microsoft GraphEdit (a multimedia program in which you could rearrange filters and output types to decode anything to file).
This seems to be a link to a story about how DeCSS was created, almost an interview.
Well, I can keep finding resources but these are the best for you all to read.
I am -NOT- against Open Source, by ANY means. Please do not take it as such. All I am saying is that Open Source projects should have legalities taken into consideration, and this one started as an illegal idea and ended up in court with a backing that wants someone's illegal activity to be legal since they can use it. I believe that someone could have just paid them royalties and written a player for linux without a hitch, though, and this is what they'll stand by if they get intelligent about these things.

OOPS - Trying Humpin list againYou have one bat and there are 100 million holes Visit Humpin!
If you need a REAL reason to host these files, try reading this. Truth has never been more purely distilled.Save a copy of this web page now!

Explanation on legality of this information:
Attention
www.rhythm.cx was hosting a list of mirrors for these files.
UPDATE: Here is a 2600 story with more details on how rhythm.cx was shut down.
I have taken it upon myself to mirror the mirrors. So until such time as the hounds of hell come a-knocking at my door, I present for you this list:

If you've got one, send responses to DVDutils.comOn DVDutils.com there's an email address asking for responses to the form letter being sent around to sites to take down deCSS content. The link to the site (in english) is here (temporary mirror while dvdutils scamper from server to server... ie:may not be available/may be out of date by the time you get to it/check the dot com for current schtuff).
And, if you're particularly bored, my letter. It's wanky and tame, but that's what they're supposed to be
;)
====
Hi you crazy kids, you
We both know there isn't a legal standpoint for doing what you're doing when it comes to legal action about taking down the information pertaining to decoding DVDs on dvdutils.com. There are perfectly legal reasons for decoding legally purchased DVDs so as to view them on other operating systems not supported by vendors. You have no legal right - and in my eyes no moral right - to threaten these websites with legal action. These are small sites largely run by passionate unpaid people for the benefit of others. They probably haven't the resources to stand against your false claims - and with the cost involved are forced (albeit in a defacto kinda way) to bow under your legal weight of faulty claims. Discussing the merits and flaws in DVD encryption is not illegal and your actions degrace the legal profession.
Come on now, that's not cricket.

In a few seconds it autodownloads the one from Denmark.. just hit stop on the page that says "Contacting downloading site, please wait...". You can choose from three sites besides the one in Denmark:
(Click shift when you click on these to download)
www.capital.net
www.dvd-copy.com
perso.libertysurf.fr I think maybe the guy's ISP deleted the file after "discovering" what was on there.. :)

Here's a link to Cornell's copy of Title 17: http://www4.law.cornell.edu/uscode
/17/index.html.
Unfortunately, some of the links inside, including 1201, don't work.It would seem to be worth disputing the letter's claim of "... you have offered to sell unauthorized DVD copies
...". I doubt that part is accurate, and I wonder if the letter has any validity without it.
