Already Done (Kind Of)The NES one has already been done. It's called the Game Axe. There's also a Game Axe Color, and they're both a lot smaller and better than what this guy has made.
As for the N64 one... it hasn't already been done, but this hack is pretty crappy. Much like the NES "hack", it's just the original system in a new case. in fact, this time it's just the original system outside of its case and hooked up to an LCD screen through regular video cables. If he had left it in the box and hooked it up to an LCD screen, it would've been the same thing.
This is a crappy hack. The portable PlayStation was much more inventive and generally cooler, as was the Atari portable from the same guy.

Re:Cool?
Actually, the portable SNES is called the Game Axe.

LCD Projector methodsIt looks like several DIY home audio/theater people out there have made home projection systems. The standard source of video appears to be the Sharp 8.4-inch LCD. That will run you ~$300. I did a search on Google for 'LCD 8.4' and had some pretty good luck.
Afraid the Fresnel lens will degrade the quality of the image from your expensive LCD? Try this Bausch & Lomb lens--it appears to be a non-Fresnel, so it doesn't have the lines that could cause some quality loss. You could end up creating a better quality product than a $4000 LCD if this lens works the way I think it does.
Some video source thoughts:
-- 7-inch 16:9 LCD (I don't know where the 7 inches are--I think they're horizontal) being offered to Playstation/PSX owners
-- good source of variety of LCDs?
-- there are several 5-inch TFT NTSC LCDs available for use with the Playstation/PSX (some better than others)If I weren't able to get good resolution out of the 16:9 version, I'd rather use a VGA LCD at ~$260-350 any day with the NTSC LCD prices Best Buy and Radio Shack charge.
Final thoughts on the dimness issue.. With an LCD, you should be able to remove the reflective backing (ever so carefully, pack a UV-protectant clear sheet of plastic over the back of the device and pump some flourescent, arc, or other bright lighting through it.
Some problems foreseen:
-- may take some experimentation to find the light that irritates the eyes the least
-- may need two settings for day and night
-- be very cautious as not to create a fire hazard -
Re:Looking good
There are number of such devices on the market allready. Some of them at: http://www.lik-sang.com/catalog/product_list.php?

Re:Why this is cool. How is KOS better suited for this? The author of KOS has long since stated that for true OS development, you'd wanna stick with NetBSD or Linux/Dreamcast. Superior memory management, mature threading and network code, and easy of porting all make Linux a viable platform for DC development. *Ahem*, I meant embedded Linux development.
Most PC games use the mouse, with a lot of keyboard shortcuts. That won't work on a console.
Hmm, standard Linux apps seem to work fine with the keyboard and mouse I use with the Dreamcast. More talking out of your arse here?If the Dreamcast has less, you've got problems. (And the resolution of a TV ain't great.)
Jesus, grab yourself a clue along with your VGA box from Lik Sang. It's USD $12.50.It's pathetic how you seem so hellbent on providing advice and bashing something you haven't even had the courage to read a couple of websites about.

GameBoy Advance
Why not just code on the gameboy advance there's a lot of utils and examples out there in fact you could use good old GCC compiled for the ARM processor. Then you could use the linker from Lik Sang. A good page to start is http://www.devrs.com/gba/.

Re:Ripoff
Sony put out a similar memory in Japan (PocketStation) it was supposed to be released in the states but never was. Final Fantasy 8 actually supported the PocketStation in the US release(it may have worked with an imported unit but I am not sure).
Here is a link to lik-sang's product page of the PocketStation -
Re:GameCube Info Sources
I would wager that the controller itself is more complex than the NES! I know, I'm stating the obvious, but it's still sort of funny to think about...

The undersideAnyone know what the expansion slots underneath will be used for? (besides "expanding", duh)

Re:how about an NES handheld?
In fact, there is a NES-Emulator for the GBA! Check this out: http://www.nolag.com/code/gbdev/pocketnes/
In order to play games, you need a ROM-writer from lik-sang

how about an NES handheld? This is not exactly on topic, but I had to throw it in here because it's just so damn cool. Here is a link to a company selling a handheld that plays the original 8bit famicom/NES games. I can play all my games again! (NES consoles long since broken). Crazy thing is it actually takes the full NES cartridge.
Same place has all sorts of shit imported from Asia - LCDs for your car for DVDs or Playstations, mod chips, all sorts of weird cellular stuff, etc. I don't work there or anything, just thought it was cool.

Re:Speaking of GBA...
It was posted in another comment, but here's the important links--
http://www.visoly.com/fa_linker.php
http://www.lik-sang.com/catalog/product_info.php?c ategory=6&products_id=1051&
This is a link to both Visoli's homepage (which has downloadable software for their products, plus manuals and product descriptions) as well as a link to Lik Sang, who apperently sell the 64M Flash Card for $109 US, and the Flash Advance Linker (the actual 'ripper' of the carts, connects to your PC via your parallel port) for $35 US. They ship internationally, and it doesn't seem that expensive really. =)
I also understand that a 128M Flash Card is in the works, so it might pay off to wait awhile and see what comes of it.

BBA!You can order an ethernet adapter that replaces the 56k modem it comes with. I have one, i set it to DHCP, stuck it behind my router, and don't have to tie up my phone line anymore to play PSO. Its very cool. Apparently Sega.com quit selling them though, so ebay is your only option... although lik-sang.com surely has them.

No IR on GBA
This is something many people don't realize, although I don't know how many would be affected. I have read about an accessory that will give IR capability, but we will have to wait and see.
Interesting idea there with the security token thing. I'm certain you could make something work. You know, it's not just a faster processor, it's a 32-bit ARM! They are already showing cart writer/backer-uppers (highly technical term ;) and 64Mbit (re: 8MByte) programmable carts for GBA at www.lik-sang.com

Re:Is it just me?
Or is it kinda pointless to run these games on an emulator - for me the whole thing about game boy's is that you can take them with you! Isn't that what one buys them for?
Now you are Really missing the point. How can you be so short sighted? Emulation can be used for alot of things, not the lest of which is development of GBA games. The next of course is that you can try games before you buy them by playing them on an emulator. Finally you can buy gba blank ROM carts from lik sang and that means free games. -
Gamedvd Player
I mentioned before that you can find the so-called game dvd player at a more reputable site: http://www.lik-sang.com/ under the name Shinco 868.
-
game dvd player
I too thought that the game dvd player was too good to be true. Later I spotted a dvd player on another site with identical features yet sporting a different (Shinco 868). It can be found at www.lik-sang.com by clicking on products -> dvd.
I have heard that lik-sang is a real company that does give you what you order, but no personal experience. -
MP3 Superstar 786I reccommend this.
(From the product page) LiKKO MP3/CD Portable Discman - Can play MP3 CD / Audio CD / CD-R / CD-RW - Support long
.MP3 file name - DIR programmable - LCD display - Resume / Normal / Hold functions - 500 seconds record sound Priced at $129 US. -
This player plays Genesis/MegaDrive gamesFor a player that's actually legal, as well as cool, look at Lik-Sang's site. They have a DVD palyer that will play MegaDrive/Genesis games burned onto CD, MP3s, CDs and DVDs.
[Note: I don't own one or anything, so I can't vouch for quality. I have bought some things from the company in the past though (PlayStation/N64 joypad -> USB convertors, which are very good), and they seem very efficient]

Shinco 868
It looks like a rebadged Shinco 868 player. There was an annoucement that it plays games in July, but they seem to have removed that information from the product information page.
Lik-Sang has had them in stock for months, and still lists them as Megadrive compatible. -
Re:You can get them now...
That has to be a Japanese import model, then, since there are no US (or European) PS2:s out yet. Here in Sweden, some cool stores have Japanese import machines, but I don't know if they actually sell them... I think they do, though. Of course, since (AFAIK) noone has yet cracked the PS2's regional lock-out crap, you'll need Japanese games for these machines, too. A (Japanese) PS2 machine imported from Hong Kong's Lik Sang goes for $609...
-
Lik-Sang has even a cooler device!
Check it out here.
It plays DVD,VCD3.0,VCD2,DVCD,MP3 all the standard stuff, even copied DVD's work on it. And for the Europeans under us (like me :-) it's not bounded by the DVD region settings.
Cheers,

Or ... MP3 station / MP3 Smart Dj
You can already import this little number from Hong Kong
... MP3 Station which is a measly $US52 instead of $US80. Not sure on the details of how it connects to the PSX or which PSX's it works with, or if its just a scam, but cool none the less.
