Re:I suspect it will work
1) We have built qbits
2) We have entangled qbits
3) We have implemented the CNOT which is the universal gate for quantum computing (similar to NAND/NOR universal gates in classical computing)Yes, but as per TFS, and as you note yourself, the issue is whether these building blocks can be scaled up to such a size as to do something useful. Quantum mechanics itself gets astronomically more complex in going from a state space of 2 qubits to 100 or 1000 qubits -- i.e., two qubits and single quantum gates is the trivial part.
The question is scaling up number of qbits, increasing coherence times (and possibly using coding solutions to reduce decoherence problems).
We have a number of quantum algorithms waiting to be implemented, and even have quantum programming languages that you can run simulations on at home today.
Which means basically nothing given that the issue is not whether we can invent such algorithms, but whether we can actually build the machine to run them on...
And there is even a LinkedIn Group on quantum information science.
So we've established that (a lot of) quantum information researchers exist then. That fact is utterly irrelevant to whether a practical quantum computer can be built, you do realize that right?

But I must admit that it could end up like fusion. We have all the basic theoretical knowledge of how to do fusion, and we can do a bit of fusion in the lab, what we lack is the engineering knowledge to achieve enough fusion on a large enough scale to make it practical.

Re:Complexity arising from simplicity
It seems to me like you are creating hypothetical scenarios of total failure. Most of the practical failure scenarios can be handled gracefully when you have facebook's resources under your command. After all they are not sending men to Mars. We have studied and now well understand distributed database problems for more than 30 years. There is pretty much nothing technologically interesting about Facebook (and Twitter for that matter).
The sad part is someone writes his ramblings and puts a flow chart or two and it becomes a story on /. -
Re:IBM did the same
I am fond of webOS(application base is tiny; but the interface is actually quite well thought out. The "cards" work quite well. Hell, maybe team Google will pick up their smoldering remains at the firesale and polish up the 'chromebooks' with some of the UI touches...)
Google's one step ahead of you
:-D When Palm sold to HP, Google moved in and lured away the guy who designed the webOS user interface, Mathias Duarte. His current job title there is "Director, Android User Experience", so it's safe to assume that we'll see some of the same ideas that animated webOS making their way into the Android UI, if not their specific implementations. -

:S (by seeing his profile, he is from the UK too) http://uk.linkedin.com/in/davegerard He has a relationship with Microsoft or its products, so spreading anti-Google articles makes sense... -

A little research on the CEO
I looked up the domain registration for Laser Power Systems and found that it was registered to Charles Stevens, current CEO of Laser Power Systems and former CEO of Helyxzion, a company that developed software for interpreting genetic sequences. I found this post on the wonders of the Helyxzion technology and how it could "cure ALL disease", "regrow lost limbs", "rebuild damaged organs", etc. Looks like that cash cow ran dry and now he's hoping Thorium and lasers will pay the bills. PEW PEW!!
-
Yeah, he's done this before... crook
This is the Charles Stevens http://help-cure-disease-now.blogspot.com/ http://www.linkedin.com/in/laserturbinepower A whois on his website shows creation in Dec 2010, and he lists. 1985 at the bottom of his website. This whole thing is ridiculous. How does this stuff make front page Slashdot? Did Slashdot merge with Enquirer or the Onion recently?

Re:PC?
So, one study is wrong. I'd believe raw data over someone making up names they think "sound black/white" and submitting resumes.
Okay, I watched the video, and tracked down the only documentation I could find about about the study. No real information about how the study was performed, potential weakness of the study (the relatively limited audience and the focus on professional/executive level jobs being two big ones), and it's basically a correlation study.
The NBER study gives detailed information on the methodology, sources of error, three pages of references, statistical analysis, etc.
Those two studies aren't even in the same planet when it comes down to rigor.

Re:Yeah, and I am a Pony
"Looks like the Australians just got scammed for 2 million."
Worse than that, he did this over a year ago. Here's his video from February 2010 which is basically the same as the July 2011 version.
His linkedin goes into a bit more detail: "The Unlimited Detail system consists of a compiler that takes point cloud data and converts it in to a compressed format, the engine is then capable of accessing this data in such a way that it only accesses the pixels needed on screen and ignores the others generating real-time graphics that look like unlimited polygons. it is also the best available way of displaying laser scanned environments, they can be of unlimited size and this will not slow down the system."
Compression? Showing only the information needed on the screen? They already do both of those. Also of interest is he was CEO of "Unlimited Detail" from 1995 until 2010, so apparently this guy has never held a job or graduate college.
Wonder how long the Australian gov't will wait before arresting him for fraud? -
Re:who needs to learn what?
What you need to learn is that according to Anonymouus there is NO difference between looking somebody up in the phonebook, and getting the dox on a lowly fatassed computer-repairman from Florida, who think he can hide his identity behind a Slashdot-username while trash-talking people who stand up to overwhelming opposition and smile at it.
There, fixed that for you, Ian Hammes
(you might be screwed if the hive gets bored and decides to feel nostalgic...) -

English is vague. "Relatively short" could be 10 months or it could be 2-3 years.
Why nitpick over an irrelevant detail? It seems to me as if you're being sexist. Nobody would have questioned a 23 y/o male lead designer who claimed to be a programmer. -

Re:We've been an Advanced Circuit customer for yea
I've used PCB Fab Express in the past, their good for 2 - 6 layers nothing with small traces or pitch. Keep to their design rules and it will go well.
If you ever go further than that, for more complexity or quantity talk with Ben Gonzalez, he's best PCB guy I've ever worked with. (No I am not him).

Re:You mean companies want to make profits?
The monocle is pretty much the Aristocrat DLC, though it's $68 instead of $100.
This gets into another bit of player rage, though the game-changing future plans are the real issue. Also, yes, from Citigroup, and "He is also responsible for the strategic initiatives of the Company"
Smells like he came along as a condition of investment for someone.

Linkedin teaching bad habitsSome days ago I tried to login in http://www.linkedin.com/ , using my gmail address as my id. I typed my linkedin password (as I remembered it) and an error appeared with this message:
"Invalid username and/or password. Please enter your email password, not your LinkedIn account password"
You can try that yourself, using any dummy email address.
I saved a screenshot here.(notice that it's not even a secure -https- page!)
Ok, I said to my myself, it seems I must enter my google password... I entered it, press "continue"... and two seconds later I though:
"Wait a moment... What...? What I have done?? How can linkedin ask me to sent to THEM my Google password ? Are they nuts? Am I nuts?"
I immediately went to my Google account and changed my password, just in case. But I still can't understand it.

Not everyone on linkedin is a professional. Just look at this listing, or this one. I'm sure this chick is legit, too,. . . And apparently, Osama bin Laden had an account on Linkedin, too. Once you weed out all the bogus accounts and practical jokes, I wonder how many seriously legitimate accounts are left? It makes one wonder if some of these accounts were deliberative created in secret by the company in order to boost their user numbers?

Well It Sure Set the Bar for Creepy
Three years ago, I used to recieve endless "Come Join Us on LinkedIn" e-mails to several e-mail accounts. Because at some point an old boss had somehow gave LinkedIn access to his Hotmail or Outlook book or something and created a place holder for me with my first and last name (and also my e-mail address) because my boss had that and only that information in his address book for me. Creeped me right the %*#@ out.
It wasn't hard to get the e-mails to stop but I'd wager that shell of a profile is out there floating around linking my old coworkers in a web -- for any of them that added that profile or had one of the e-mail addresses in their book. At the time, no one seemed to find this alarming but me so whatever. And now Facebook and a lot of sites will harvest your address book for you from Hotmail or whatever and then it will aggressively market that person to come to said social networking site on your behalf. Each site wants to boast fifty billion users (or some factor higher than living human beings), right?
But LinkedIn is really outpacing those sites: an outlook plugin/hijacker, drupal integration, actually a plugin for virtually anything and of course APIs to put it in your site.
So I was wondering what had gone wrong when I heard about its IPO the other day. After all, it's one of the creepiest spammiest social networking sites I've encountered. But that's just it, its methods are effective and so it is rewarded. If privacy abuser Facebook is "worth" the yearly GDP of a small nation, surely a website implementing the same APIs and plugins while experimenting with creepin' it up a notch is going to drive investors crazy. I think it's more a sign of overvaluation of a privacy abuse bubble--one I've been hoping to see pop for quite sometime now. -

Re:Security researchers or confidential informants
"The stigma of being a "confidential informant" is quite hazardous. Why do you think there's a Witness Protection Program?"
But... he is a security researcher, here's his security websites and his LinkedIn says he has a PhD in Computer Science and works at the Mississippi State University Center for Computer Security Research (CCSR).
I'd say he's qualified. I don't understand why parent automatically assumed he was just an informant. If you're a private detective and with PhD in Criminal Forensics and you see a felony take place wouldn't you call the police? Would /. then assume you're simply an informant instead of being the private detective that the article correctly identified you as being? -

CRTC = Bell + Telus + Rogers
Expect a lot of scrutiny from the CRTC, Bell, Telus, and Rogers.
Quite a bit of redundancy in that statement, considering that CRTC is basically the law making arm of the latter three. The vice-chairman of CRTC used to a VP at Rogers for 15 years.
