I love bashing Microsoft like the rest of us, but this guy was only a dev manager! Why don't we talk about the college hire tester who left for Goldman Sachs this month on the front page of Slashdot, while we're at it!

If you're not familiar with Microsoft, dev managers are middle management. They manage line managers and have little impact on the product vision, features, or strategy. The principal title is very misleading if you think he was important. Plus, he was only there for 2 years -- which should be suspicious to any hiring manager. From his LinkedIn profile he now is a VP at eBay. Who wouldn't make a jump from middle management to executive? This looks more poorly on eBay to me than Microsoft.

And I'm not saying Microsoft is the place to be... but what a non-story!

We have never allowed US citizens or foreign citizens working in the US
to hack on crypto code (Niels Provos used to make trips to Canada to
develop OpenSSH for this reason), so direct interference in the crypto
code is unlikely. It would also be fairly obvious - the crypto code
works as pretty basic block transform API, and there aren't many places
where one could smuggle key bytes out. We always used arcrandom() for
generating random numbers when we needed them, so deliberate biases of
key material, etc would be quite visible.

I agree. I've had jobs where they've hired everyone for a project and suddenly they cancelled the project less than a year later, should we have all received a few million? Hiring and firing is part of business, if you can't fire someone anymore because it's going to cost 2 million dollars then that'll hurt everyone.

Guess the moral of the story is they should have fired him and left him in Dallas and hired someone new in Minnesota. Would have saved the 9 months of salary they paid him and $2 million dollars.
