How to use Linux to save our environment
Besides building computer hardware with ecological awareness, there are also ways to use software this way. There are many tips and tricks to do so described in the Linux-Ecology-HOWTO, which is also available in Japanese.

Linux-Ecology-HOWTO (TLDP)
You may find much more tips and tricks how to use a computer with ecological awareness in the Linux-Ecology-HOWTO, which is also available at the The Linux Documentation Project - TLDP and in Japanese.

I know this is a troll, but ...
No offense, but the odds of you finding one thousand computer users willing to keep Linux on their desktop for everyday use is also next to ZERO.
Gee, it would probably take me so long to look up a few Linux Users Group pages and ask who uses Linux for a desktop. There can't be any of them out there

Re:Japanese Translation
OK, basically what it says is someone on the pslinux mailing list named "Ogochan" (who's almost certainly Ogoshi Masami, the head of the Japan Linux Association, spoke with SCE's president and was told that if SCE decided to distribute Linux for the PS2, they could do it tomorrow (i.e., immediately - so it's definitely running).
One thing that bothers me is that Sony is distributing the Linux-based development environment only to licensed developers (which is not a problem in itself, as long as they give the developers the source - have they?), but none of the developers have re-distributed the source themselves, which would seem to indicate that Sony has placed legal restrictions on them - a definite breach of the GPL.

Just wanted to add that anyone who wants to know more about the whole topic should start at this page.

Re:MkLinuxplease mod that +1 informative.
on a related note, linux (i mean the native monolithic kernel, not mk) can now run on nubus PDM machines ([678]100s) thanks to Takashi Oe. his has patches are available here. -
Non-mach Linux for NuBus macs
One developer has started a port of the standard monolithic kernel to first-generation (NuBus) PowerMacs. There is documentation on his web page, and penguinppc.org has a US mirror of the files.

Re:Happy Birthday is not free...RMS does indeed have an opinion on copyrighted music and literature (does this surprise anyone?)...
You can find his exact words in this interview. He obviously thinks that music should be free (as in beer) because that way the musicians would make more money, and he suggests that copyright on literature is unecessary.

Re:IPv6 - a thought
First we need the distribution providers to start turning on IPv6 support. I've managed to setup a RedHat box to do IPv6, but it required redoing the kernel, manually patching a couple of packages, and replaing quite a few other packages. Your average user just isn't ready for this yet.
Let me throw a few links at anyone who wants to try setting up IPv6 on their box. Be careful, you can really foul up a machine doing this wrong.
- http://www.bieringer. de/linux/IPv6/IPv6-HOWTO/IPv6-HOWTO.html - Linux IPv6 Howto document
- http://v6rpm.jindai.net/ - IPv6 RPM pacakges
- http://www.v6.linux.or.jp/develop.html - IPv6 Linux user group
- http://www.freenet6.net/ - User configured IPv6 tunnels
Instead of doing a IPv6 use day, we need an IPv6 lobbying day. Get your distribution provider to compile IPv6 support in to the default kernel (at least as a module), and start including the IPv6 packages and scripts with their installation.

Linux kernel on top of Zaurus kernel, no X
A friend of mine has this little puppy running and it's great as a geek's toy. What impresed me most is, that the zxLinux kernel runs *on top* of the native kernel and OS. So they just wrote a device driver for the keyboard to get that info from the host OS. That means it can do hand-writing recognition and use the on-screen keyboard. You can even switch to one of the built-in apps.
The only problem is, since the Zaurus doesn't support unloading started apps (sounds funny, but true), you'd have to reset the whole device to shut down zxLinux. And the Zaurus has only 5MBs of RAM, of which the kernel alone uses 2.5MB.
According to the developers talk at the PDA-BOF at LinuxConference2000 in Tokyo, they do plan to make somekind of GUI platform available. It won't be full X (no RAM to do that) but probably some X-ish implementation possibly using frame-buffer with widgets designed for 1/4 VGA size screens. At yesterday's PDA-BOF, the PDA makers agreed to cooperate in creating a common Linux PDA-GUI spec/API.
Though this is defnetly nothing for the avarage Zaurus user, its surely a super cool geek toy, and is more advanced than the Linux-port to the Palm. -
Re:Why you should avoid Debian.
I don't mean this as flame bait (despite what my handle implies), but I did find a url to an interview with RMS which pretty much advocates piracy (although he doesn't really call it that).
Just FYI, I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with anything here.
